The librarian of the clan, Valenya is in charge of keeping the clan records safely tucked away from prying claws. She is also in charge of maintaining the clan's archives, which mostly just includes the number of things Vespera has written, and nobody would want to steal those, anyway. Valenya also has the task of keeping track of the clan's official papers for the clan leaders, as well as other tomes her clanmates would be more than willing to lose a scale to get their claws on. Thankfully, nobody knows those tomes even exist, so nobody's tried tearing through the library yet. And even if they did know, Valenya's buried the books in a secret place where nobody would ever find them.

(Hint: It's under a pile of Vespera's most boring papers, and some dragons would rather die before they touched those.)

Exceedingly calm and peaceful, Valenya is the kind of dragon who wouldn't panic and scream even if the world was ending around her. In fact, objects and events that terrify most dragons seem to merely amuse her instead. Even when some dragon miraculously ticks her off, Valenya rarely resorts to violence. And even when she does, well, Nocturne dragons aren't really known for being able to pack force into their punches - she'd probably hurt herself more than she'd hurt the other dragon.

Theoretically speaking, Valenya could throw books at those who annoy her, but she'd never do that. Well, with the interesting books, at least. She's still waiting for that day when someone annoys her enough to receive the wrath of the sixty two-thousand-page law books that Ma'at wrote.

Valenya works with Vespera to keep order in the library, though she does this mainly to stop Vespera from taking things. The reporter makes an excellent guard dog, especially when she believes that the library is part of the territory that's surrendered itself to her greatness. With Vespera striding around the library yelling at intruders, Valenya can do more important things, like drink a cup of tea and relax. Not that Vespera has noticed, of course, the proud Pearlcatcher believing Valenya to be one of her most loyal minions. Valenya isn't going to argue, especially when she gets to kick back and enjoy while Vespera does all the hard work.

Aside from preventing the library from being blown up, Valenya also helps Haukin with his paperwork in her free time, much to the relief of the poor overworked Spiral. Valenya has a talent with paperwork, able to efficiently sort, organise, detect problems, and revise statements - all without having a mental meltdown. She especially enjoys working alongside Nanshe, because the Skydancer has no clue about the weird scribbles in ink and she can tell him anything she want knowing he'll believe her. The downside of this is that Nanshe has gotten afraid of the scary paperwork, and now Haukin needs to bait him with crinkly paper balls to have him continue working.

Valenya is also the unofficial leader of the clan's research team, because Muffin will burn things down and the clan needs someone who's actually somewhat responsible in charge. This position has proved to be less leading and more damage control, since Muffin and Vanya can whip up some pretty serious disasters when they want to. Thankfully, Valenya doesn't have to beat them up alone - Harmony has a pretty mean right hook when it comes to unsafe experiments and her brother, and it's quite entertaining to point her in the right direction and watch her wreck everything.

Valenya is currently very interested in Astraea, even going as far as teaching her to read and write. Strangely, while Astraea forgets new vocabulary in a record of six point three seconds, she has the uncanny ability to read ancient draconian.

Some dragons might wonder why Valenya is in charge of the library, as she's proven completely incapable of slinging spells. While Vespera is great at getting rid of the small hazards, security spells are still needed to prevent intruders from taking the more sensitive material. Luckily, Valenya isn't the librarian for nothing. Unbeknownst to her clanmates, she is an expert in sealing spells, capable of imprisoning the unfortunate within the pages of a book. So far, she has volumes full of exotic creatures and some more minor annoyances she's trapped in her books, which are imbued with a special spacial magic that makes it impossible for her prisoner to get out.

It's a dangerous ability, and not one to take lightly of. So far, the only leader who's taken advantage of this ability is Ma'at, who's asked Valenya to imprison dragons she pities too much to kill. While Valenya isn't too happy about having to trap criminals in her precious books, she's not in the habit of arguing with Ma'at, and thus has a special volume for everyone who gets on Ma'at bad side. Rumours say that there's actually a former clan member in there, but further research is required before any assumptions can be made.

Once, out of curiosity, Isfet asked her if he could see all the prisoners she's gathered in her books.

He never asked again.

Some Things Shouldn't Be Remembered

The Aequitian research team was made up of a smart group of individuals, trained in the art of magic and science and capable of uncovering most things that would leave other researcher writhing in the throes of paradoxes and mysteries. Which meant that it had taken them about ten minutes to get bored of fixing the aftermath of Muffin’s newest invention to focus on something else. Something interesting.

“You know,” Harmony remarked as she carefully removed a spark of magic from a bit of stone. The rock might’ve been smoking. “Has anyone ever found Astraea’s lack of memory strange?”

“Tell me about it,” Valenya grumbled from where she was poring over a huge book. She was sitting in the only spot that was not covered by slime. “I keep trying to teach her to read and write, and she keeps forgetting!” she threw both arms up. “How do you forget how to read and write? It’s a technical skill! Memory loss shouldn’t affect technical skills!”

“I wonder if we could dissect her head,” Vanya mused from his corner in the laboratory, where he was dutifully stirring Muffin’s cauldron. After the event-that-shalt-not-be-named, their alchemist had been called out for a yelling by Ma’at. It was the sort of thing that happened once every other week, so nobody was too concerned. (Muffin never learns her lesson, anyway.) “Perhaps there is something wrong with her hippocampus, or prefrontal cortex. Maybe the amygdala? I would like to take it apart.”

“Good luck getting permission,” Valenya told him. He opened his mouth. “No.”

“I do not see the point of this if you won’t let me try,” he grumbled.

“We deal with Muffin enough on a daily basis, so if you don’t want me to beat you over the head with that cauldron, you’ll shut up and stir,” Harmony told him. Vanya mumbled something that was definitely an obscenity. “Anyway. I think we should do something about her memory. I feel bad for the poor thing, never quite remembering who she is and what she’s supposed to be doing.”

“I don’t give a damn about her, but I’d be interested in restoring her memory for scientific purposes. I’m tired of investigating the random stuff they bring us.” Valenya closed her book with a snap. “Right, let’s do this. How do we do this?” She looked around. “Ideas?”

Harmony thought about it. “Maybe if we can’t fix her memory, we could somehow restore her to the point before she lost her memory?”

“Temporal magic like that is highly forbidden and tears apart the fabric of time and space,” Valenya reminded her.

Harmony looked back. “We’re Arcane.”

“Excellent, let’s do it.”

In retrospect, that might not have been the smartest idea ever.

Then again, they were members of the Aequitas Clan. The fact that their idea didn’t level the lair, summon a monster, or bring someone back from the dead was good enough by itself.

“So, have we checked whether or not this actually works?” Harmony asked as Valenya dragged Astraea into the laboratory. The Nocturne, showing some sense of self-preservation, was flailing every step of the way, as even an idiot with a memory issue wouldn’t want to step in Muffin’s laboratory. “Because this can go badly,” Harmony said as Astraea almost knocked over a stack of books. “Very badly.”

Astraea paused, having forgotten why she was struggling. Then Vanya came over with Muffin’s cauldron, and she remembered the terrors of the black pot and began flailing again.

“Okay, but on the bright side, she’s already so dumpy, nobody will notice if she’s a bit weirder,” Vanya pointed out, dumping the contents of the pot into the magic circle. “Besides, we don’t have anyone else to try this on. It’s for the greater good. Oh, and she might get her memories back, too. That’s also good.”

Valenya dropped Astraea in the circle and froze her with magic. “Right. Since some of us are clearly hesitating-”

Vanya raised a claw. “I’m not.”

“Put your hand down, pint-size. Since Harmony is clearly hesitating, let’s list out the pros and cons of going forward with an unstable, untested spell that will distort the fabric of time and space as we know it,” Valenya paused. “Cons?”

“It might level the lair,” Harmony said. “Or summon a monster.”

“Pros?” Valenya spread her wings. “Astraea could get her memories back. We get to advance the limits of science and magic. And even if it fails, as long as the test subject doesn’t die or lose a limb, we’ll be perfectly fine! She’s weird enough. Like Vanya said, nobody is going to notice if she’s a bit weirder.”

“Myrtle might,” Harmony pointed out.

“And she’ll have to go through the entire rest of the clan before she gets to us, so we’d have at least a day or two of reprieve before she kills us,” Valenya finished. She looked at Astraea. “Let’s get her consent first. Astraea, do you agree to participate in this extremely dangerous and potentially life threatening experiment that may or may not change your world and body and soul entirely?”

Astraea stared at her. She opened her mouth, then forgot what she was going to say. “What?”

“Say yes,” Vanya told her.

“Yes?”

“Excellent!” Valenya landed in her casting circle. “Let’s blow this joint, everyone.”

“This is going to go badly,” Harmony said. She didn’t sound like she particularly care. She had a notepad in hand and a positively manic expression. “So, so badly.”

“Which is why we’re going to blame it on Muffin when things go south. Let’s get cracking.”

The spell was completed in a flash, and smoke poured from the remains of the magic circle like a defective fire dragon. Valenya coughed, and strained her eyes to look through the smoke. She could see the pale blue scales of Astraea's body, and sent the smoke scattering with a gust of magical wind.

"Astraea?" she asked.

Astraea blinked once. Then twice. Then she lunged backwards, slamming into Muffin’s cauldron with a high-pitched shriek.

“D̵̵͢͞r͏̵e̷̡͢͟a̕͝͏m͘͢͡͠è̡r̸̸͠͡s̴̨̀,̵͡ ̧̕͜d͡͏͠r̕͜ę̴̶̛̀a̡͠m҉̷͢͜e͜҉̀r̸̷̸̀ś̴̴͝,҉̶̨͟ ́͏t̷̛҉͠h͜o͏̛s̕͢͞͞e̴͞͝͠͏ ̷͜t̵̨͟͢h̷̛̛͜a͘͝͞t҉̵̵҉̛ ̡͜s̶̨e̸̡̕e̷͜͠k̕͡,” she screamed, then promptly slammed into the nearest bookshelf. Harmony levitated it out of the way before anything could explode. “F҉̀i͏̶́͜n̵d́͢͠ ̸͏̡͏t̡̛͢͞h̨̛͏͝e̵̴͢͡ ̶͜͟͟͠s̷̨͜i͜͝n̨͡g̢̡į̸͜͞n̨͜͠g̡͘ ̸͡g̵̛̀̕h̸̨̧̕o̧̡̨͞͞s̷͏t̢͜s̷̸̸͞ ̴̢̕͘w̷h̸͏̶͞ò̶͡͡ ̵̀w̶͡ȩ̸͞ȩ̴̸̛́p̴̀͜͡͡.”

“Well, that’s a new one,” Vanya remarked. “I don’t suppose anyone can tell me what she’s saying?”

“It appears to be ancient draconian,” Valenya observed calmly as Astraea screamed and bounced off the laboratory walls. “Interesting. I knew she spoke the language, but on this level of fluency, I’d say she’s a native speaker.”

Harmony fluttered her fins. “Which would mean… what?”

“Heck if I know, but it’s interesting.”

A loud thudding sound echoed outside, and Pachetonas burst into the room, looking cross. “What’s happening?” she demanded. “I keep telling you all if you’re going to blow up something, do it outside! I swear to the Eleven, this entire lair is going to end up as a pile of ashes one day and-” she caught sight of Astraea, who was screaming and banging her head off of the ruins of Muffin’s cauldron. Pachetonas paused. Then nodded. “Point to the first, I don’t know what you did, but just for the fact that cursed black pot is broken, you get bonus points. Point to the second,” she gestured at Astraea. “What the heck happened?”

“We attempted to restore Astraea’s memories,” Harmony explained as more footsteps echoed through the hallways, all the nearby dragons converging to see what had exploded this time. “It is unclear if we were successful.”

“È̢̢͘͢c̴͘̕͠͠h͞҉̴o͢,̧͏̷ ̶̵̸̧͜e͜͜͡ç̷͘͠͞h̡͡ơ̧,̷̧͏͡ ̡̛͏̵̕c͘͡͝u̕̕͟͝r̷͟͝͡s͏e̢͟҉͠͠d̶̢͠ ̶̶l̴̵̛͜͜ų͢͜͞l̶̶̀́͞ĺ̕͘͢͠a̢͟͡b͘̕ý,” Astraea sobbed. “Ś̕͢͟i̶̡̛͢n̛͟͜͜͡g̶͘͝ ̴͟͢͠i̶͜ţ̴̛́͢,̧̀͘͡ ̢́͡͏d̨̀͞o͘҉n̴̢͝'̵̡ţ͞͠͝ ̧͢͜͏̛s̷͢i̸̢̧͢͟n̵̵͞g̶̡͟ ̨̨̕í͜͢͞t̵̴̨͡,̸̡̨́͢ ͞҉̡̛t̵͜͟҉̀h̸͘e̷y̴̶͠͝͞ ̡̕͠͏s̨͞à҉n͏g͞ ͞a̢n̸̶͘̕͟d̸҉҉͝ ̷̶͘͞͏d҉̴̢͢͜ì̸͘͘͝ȩ͘͝͝ḑ̸͝͡.”

“I’d say it’s a success,” Valenya said with a nod. “She has likely been restored to the way she was before she lost her memories. She looks like she’s having a meltdown.”

“That would be an underestimation,” Pachetonas noted as Astraea continued shrieking. “Uh, when will that stop?”

“I have no idea. Do we have a nice padded room somewhere where we can store her until she stops?” Vanya asked.

Ravanai burst into the room, Venti close on her heels. The Fae and Skydancer looked around, their stances that of those used to the explosions that occurred in this room and also used to helping with whatever occurred after said explosions. When they caught sight of Astraea bouncing off the walls and the intact room, they both paused.

“There should not be so many Arcane dragons in the same room,” Venti noted.

Ravanai’s fins were flat. “What happened.”

“And what’s wrong with Astraea?” Venti hurried over. “Stop hitting yourself! Wait!” He grabbed the Nocturne and dragged her away from the wall. “What have you been doing to her? She’s bleeding!”

“The blood part wasn’t our fault, she hurt herself,” Vanya pointed out. Venti shot him a crossed look and set to healing a shrieking Astraea.

“L̸̛͜͡e̷̴ţ̢́̕͟ ̢̕͢͢m̸͘͜͞e͢͢ ̡̛́͟͠f̸̵̛͏o͠r͏̢͠g̛͞͝é̷̶͜t̀͡҉,҉̧̨ ͜͞ĺ̢ȩ̷̷̀̀t̷̴ ̡̧m̵̡̀͜҉e҉̸̶ ͘͡͏f̨̨̀o̡̨r̡̀g̴ę̶̕͞t̷̢̀͢͝,̴ ̴̵̧I̸̛͜͡ ̷̛d͘҉̢͘ò̸n͠҉̷̕'̧͝t̷̶̛ ̶̢͠ẁ̶̕͡a̴̸n̸̢̛t͜͏͢ ͏̵͘͝t͏̷o͟͞ ̸̴̡̛r̷͠͞é̡̕m҉͠é̵̡͝ḿ̛͟͞b̸̡͟͞e̴̡͢r҉́͞,” the Nocturne wailed.

“We restored her memories,” Harmony told Ravanai. “Nothing blew up. Except perhaps her sanity.”

Ravanai considered that. “That does not seem like something I can fix.”

The door was kicked open as Haukin flew in. He looked around, taking in everything with a rapid, efficient blink, then turned to the others. “What happened?” Harmony repeated her explanation, and he shook his head. “That was possible? But…” he looked at Astraea. “Is she… okay?”

“L̡͝͝e̴̡̡̕ą̸́̀́v̶̴̧̕e̸,̴͞ ̶̢͟͟͞c͏͘a̸̴͘͟n̨͜'̶̢t҉̢͘ ͏̸̨̕ļ̕͝è̡̧͢͜a̡̕v͡͏è̵͜҉,́͢ ̧d̢̨̢͞ó͠ǹ̷́͢'̷̵̢t̡ ́͠l̶̨̧e͏҉̢a̧͞͞v̢̡̢e̸,̵̡̢̀͘ ̧̀̀p͞l͏̵͟͡è̸̸͞a͟͢͝ş̵́͟ȩ̵̷ ͏̧l̶̢̨̀͠e͡͏͟͡a̸̷̛͘͝v̵̨̕͞e̴͢,” Astraea sobbed. “W̡h҉̛͟e̵r͟͟͟͜͡e̴͢͏̴ ̷͘͠a̛̛r͢͞e̷̴͜͠ ̴̴̧̢̀t́͏ḩ̷̴̕è̷̶͜y̷̸͘͞҉?̡͢͞ ̨̢̀͏Ẃ҉h̡̨́҉͏e̛r҉̵́e̵͞ ̶͞҉͜a͝͏r̕̕͠͝҉e̷͘ ̢̕͢͞t̢͘͡͡͞h͘͠ę̵́͟ỳ̡̛?̢͢͏̧ ̨̡̀͠D̴͜i̷̷d́̀ ̵̨̀̀̀í̶̢̛͠ţ̸ ̧͟҉t̷͟͡ą̴̵̸k̸e̶̸ ͏̛͏͞t̛̕̕͡h̶̶̛e̡̢͡m̶̸͘?̸̴́̀”

“Riiight,” he said. “Venti?”

“I…. I don’t know if this is something I can fix. What did you do to her? What’s wrong with her? She’s never been coherent in the first place, and you just made it worse!” the healer accused.

“Well, we were doing her a favor,” Vanya said, flapping his fins. “But yes. The side effects were… not what we thought they would be.”

“Right,” Haukin said, stepping up to the plate. “First, take her to the infirmary. Next…” he looked at the others.

“She’ll probably calm down,” Valenya said. “Probably. Most likely. One percent chance?”

“It depends on what she encountered that made her lose her memory in the first place,” Harmony decided. “The trauma should pass, with proper healing and care.”

“So… she’ll become a productive member of society after this episode?” Pachetonas asked.

“No promises, but with her memory back?” Valenya smiled. It was not a nice smile. “We might get some answers.”

“So, that was a bust.”

“Tell me about it,” Hathor said. The Spiral leader didn’t look amused. “No, seriously, at what point did you think it was a good idea to tear apart the fabric of time and space and restore Astraea’s memory?”

“We were trying to do a good thing,” Valenya said, trying not to act like a guilty criminal being charged for murder. “It, uh, did not work out that way, but in all honesty, I don’t think you can blame this on us.”

She received three pitying gazes from Ma’at, Hathor, and Demeter. None of them looked amused, which was a shame, but Valenya didn’t think she could blame them for that. In the past three days since Astraea had recovered her memories, the Nocturne had dissolved into a lunatic, screaming in ancient draconian not even Valenya could understand. She’d ended up getting sealed into a book. Valenya wasn’t too happy about that, but that was better than getting hit over the head by Demeter.

“You didn’t take into consideration that whatever made her lose her memories in the first place would’ve been traumatic to make her lose her sanity,” Demeter said. “That is not proper lab protocol.”

Vanya threw his arms up from behind Valenya. “We’re ARCANE.”

“Look, we just want to fix her curse of forgetfulness,” Valenya said. “It is not my fault that said curse seemed to be tied to insanity. That being said, we’re kicking around the bush here, so we might as well get down to it: what do we do?”

The leaders exchanged a look. Ma’at was carving a bit of wood with her sword, making it clear that as long as the clan’s safety wasn’t in danger, this wasn’t a discussion she had any interest in. Hathor look mostly annoyed, and Demeter looked emotionless as usual.

“We can’t find anyone to communicate to her in ancient draconian,” Demeter said. “Nor do we have a therapist.”

“And we need the old Astraea to maintain diplomatic relations with Myrtle, because I am not fighting that Guardian or sending someone else,” Hathor added. “We need the old Astraea back. Having her as she is right now isn’t helpful at all. Can you reverse the spell?”

“Probably,” Valenya admitted. “We still have the materials for one more casting.” She pulled out the comic book she’d put Astraea in. “Are you sure you don’t want to question her? I mean, she’s a very interesting specim-” Harmony shot her a look, and she caught herself “-one of our greatest assets in this clan, I swear, and there’s something mysterious about this ancient chanting.”

Demeter and Hathor looked at each other. Ma’at continued carving her wood block.

“Worth a try,” Hathor said. “I mean, I won’t lie, this is kind of entertaining. Valenya?”

Valenya released Astraea from the book, and the Nocturne emerged on the ground between the others, wrapped in her wings like a cocoon and staring flatly at the ceiling.

“Hey, she’s back,” Vanya said.

“Ì̴̡͜͡ ̷̡̛̕s͏̷e̶̷é̴͘ ̷͜͜͜įţ̷̀͟,̸̧͢͞ ̧͢͠Ì̷̕̕͜ ̀͡͠s̀͟͡e̷͢͜͡é͟͟͡ ̷́͡i͠͏t̷͢,̷̀͘҉̡ ̧̧̕I̸̢̧ ́͏̴s̶̷e̸͘͟ę̛́̕ ̶̸̢͡͠i̕͠t̷͞͡,̵̛҉҉͟ ̡i̡̕̕͠͝t͏͢҉̸̢'̢̛̕s̵̷̀ ͘҉̕͝h̡̕͝͡ȩ̸̷̀̕ŕ̶̶è̡͘͜,͘” she said coldly.

“Never mind,” Vanya muttered. “I don’t suppose anyone understood that.”

“The first word is ‘I,’ but I don’t understand that variant of ancient draconian,” Valenya admitted.

Demeter leaned forward. “Astraea. Do you remember us?”

“D́͟͡r̴̢̀͢͠ę́͏͜a̸̕͡m͏̴̶͟͟è̸̵r̨̀͡͠s̷̡̛̀,̴̧̕͜ ͡͏d̡r̷̸̀e̶̛҉͞a̷͡m͜e҉́r̢̀̕s̢,̸̧͠͡ ͏̶͘͢͟t͜h̶̴͡͞o̵̴͜͡͝s̷̸̕é̵͘͜͟ ̡̛̀͡͞t̸͝h́̕͏҉a͜͡t̡̀͘͠ ̸̛͞s͞e͘͠҉̵͝e̴̡͢ḱ̴̸̴͡,́͘͜͟” Astraea replied frostily. “T̸͜͠h̴͜͞͏e̵̷̸͡ ̴̡s̢̀i̸͠͡n҉̷͞g̷̢͘̕͠i̷̡ņ̶̶́͡g̸͟͡,̨̡͜͝ ̸͢͞ś͟͏̵ì̴̵̴̢n̴҉g̸͞i̵̕̕͠n͏̕͟g̶̵,̶̧̡ ̸͜҉̀͘g̶h̢́͝ó̢̕͡͡s҉҉̀t̡͢͟͢͝s͏̧ ̷̧̀t̴̸́͝h̶̴͞a̴̸͘͠t̢̨̛͜ ̴̕͘͘͠w͟͝è͘e͘͡͠͝p҉̕.̵̨”

Everyone looked at Valenya, who shrugged. “I got nothing. Universa might know. Or Kavenia. Or Mysteria. She seems to know everything.”

“We have entirely too many dragons whose names end with an ‘a.’” Hathor said.

“Good luck telling those with it to change their names,” Demeter shot back. She turned again to Astraea. “Can you tell us what you remember? In as simple words as possible.”

Astraea turned to look at her, her usually blank eyes narrowed and filled with a clarity that was terrifying. “Í̸̀́t̸͜͟͡'̕͜͡͏s̵͠ ̷͘͟͝t́̀͝ớ̀ó͢͠͞ ̸͏͡l̵̨a҉҉̀t҉̸̷e͟.̶̸̡͘͟ ̷̢Į͠ ̡͏͠r̵̶̵͡é͟͝͡m̛e̢͢͞m̴̢b͢͜e̸̶̵͠ŗ́͜.̸̀́I̵̸͜͟t̶͝ ̨̡͠w̵̢͘a̶̛͜͡ķ͜͜e͟҉̸̷̵s̢͜,̶̢̨͞ ̷͟͏̸t́͘h͡e̷y̡͟ ̢̡̀w̴̸͝͡a̶̕͢k̸̀͡è̡,̷̶͟҉ ̴͘͘͝į͢t̢͘͡ ̷͘̕͏b҉̨͘͘r̴̨̡͜͡e̷͘á̶̸̷k̡̡̕ś̸̢.̶̸̶͝”

“Yeah, this isn’t going to work,” Hathor said. She got up. “Turn her back, gang. We’ve got a clan to run and we don’t need anymore dragons on our ‘to worry about’ list.”

“You keep finding ways to kick dragons off that list,” Demeter said.

“Only because Muffin’s name takes up too much space.”

It took a matter of minutes. Valenya guessed that was the benefit of having efficient coworkers. After a quick discussion with Harmony, and grabbing materials from Vanya, they had the casting circle ready to go, and Astraea was dragged into the middle of it. She didn’t move. She didn’t speak. She simply stared flatly at the ceiling, like a criminal waiting for her execution.

“I̧̡t͏̸̢̛ ̴̷̧͡͡w̵͟͜͢͟ì͡͝l̷̛ĺ̨ ̷̡͜͏͜ń͡o̢͞t҉͘͢͠ ͘̕c̨͘h̶̴͠a͡n҉͟҉͜g̴̵̢e̡ ̶̢̀͘͢y͠o҉̡̕͏̕ú͡r̵͘͟ ̶̵͞e͝͏n̸̡͞d̵̕͜͡i͞҉n̵̕͏g̡͝.̷̧̨̀” the Nocturne said.

“Are we ready?” Valenya called. “I can’t take this creepiness anymore.”

Vanya just looked disdainful. “You’re ARCANE.”

“Right,” Harmony levelled a brutal look at Vanya, and he muttered something under his breath. “Let’s do this.”

In a flash of light, it was all over, and Valenya waved away the smoke to approach Astraea, who was now curled up with her wings tucked properly at her sides, staring at the smoke.

“Astraea?” she asked.

Astraea frowned at her. “The smoke looks pretty.”

“She’s back,” Vanya said. “Excellent. Get back to work, Astraea. Myrtle’s probably waiting for you.”

Astraea immediately jumped to her feet. “Must! Recruit! Her!” she rushed out of the laboratory in a wake of smoke. Valenya coughed and stepped back, shaking her head.

“Well,” she said. “I guess that’s for the best.”

She headed back to the library. There was always work to be done, and it looked like she wouldn't be poking the limits of magic and space for a few minutes.

"But then that's just boring! What's the point of coming here if you don't have scientific and or magical establishments to topple?... Well, fine, just don't touch that shelf over there. That's just a personal project, containing stories of the dragons in this clan... what do you mean you sense magic in them? They're perfectly normal, I promise. Why would I lie?"

"Are you done? Well, congratulations on wasting what I'm sure was so many hours of your natural life. Good riddance, I don't see why you had to come into my library to READ... hmph. You didn't touch those books on the shelves I said not to touch, right? Hm? Actually, there seems to be a few books I didn't put there... strange...
