GOD OF THE SOUL NEXUS

Long ago and far away, Nightmare ruled a clan of His own, a wasting thing strewn out on an unsteady floe straddling the border of the Starfall Isles and the Southern Icefield. The "lair" over which He presided consisted of a few desperately dug trenches purposed simply to shield the dragons from a fraction of the bitter cold; they served for precious little else. The clan consisted of Himself, His wife Garnet (a mortal), His Daughter Ruby and eventually Her wife Gardenia... and one other. This last one, Dewi, was some strange sort of being — halfway between a mortal and a God, perhaps — and, somehow, held the key to unlocking Nightmare's divine powers. He called her The Guide.

You see, Nightmare was not capable of fathoming His own divinity at that time. He attributed His marvelous discoveries to anything else — the strange juncture between Ice and Arcane energies, fractures in dimensional veils, the uncannily keen guidance of Dewi — anything but His own extraordinary nature. And just what was it He had uncovered? Well... the very Soul Nexus He now rules, a complicated astral web of ghosts and other souls who have lost themselves in the journey between liminal spaces. Discovering the Heart of the Nexus allowed Him to build new pathways and oversee the entirety of the mechanism. In the early days of mapping out this space, Nightmare found nothing but pure delight — the call of purpose that leads a dragon to forsake all else in search of what is Higher.

Sadly, His "Guide" lay in wait to lead Him astray. Dewi spun yarns that spanned miles about how His breach into the Nexus represented a tear in the dimensional fabric, how it was now His duty to weave the broken pieces back together and hold them there in order to protect the welfare of all the souls that lay within. Without His constant vigilance, she whispered, their beings would forever be erased from existence entirely. For the better portion of a year, she drove Him to the brink of the most paranoid, ghastly terrors she could devise; so total was Nightmare's entrancement in these dark delusions that He turned His fears outwards, lashing out most particularly at Ruby for forsaking Her original identity as His "son." Though this marked a bitter period in Their relationship, it also, thankfully, presented the impetus for His freedom from Dewi's bonds.

Ruby had always had Her suspicions about Dewi, the way she skulked around Her Father as if she wished to become His shadow. Her opinion only worsened as this strange Wildclaw's machinations pushed Nightmare to such a breaking point that Garnet, repulsed by what He had become, finally left His side. Enough was enough; Ruby decided to root out whatever sick game Dewi was playing at. Once She gathered and pieced together enough information, She managed to confront Nightmare alone and inform Him that Dewi was actually some sort of deranged cultist looking to stage a summoning of some kind, using His control over the Heart of the Nexus for this very purpose. As all became clear to Him, a great fury rose up within. When next Dewi appeared before Him, with a deafening roar, He pushed her into the Nexus and entrapped her within, rendering her just as bereft of life as all the souls she'd toyed with in her manipulations of Him.

Time passed. The dust settled from the fallout of this cascade of events, and when it did, it slowly dawned on Nightmare that the time to move on had arrived. Eternally grateful for His Daughter's patience and heroic actions, He beseeched Her for forgiveness and asked Her to come with Him as He searched for a real home — somewhere They both could fully and happily belong. The immense spiritual energy of Voidlight Valley quickly magnetized Him, and the moment He stepped foot in the Temple, He realized this was exactly where He and Ruby belonged: the kinship of Divinity, family even where no relation existed. Nowadays, Nightmare is happier than ever, sitting atop a throne far closer to the locus of His precious Nexus than ever. He guides lost souls in just the way He pleases, enjoys His Daughter's company as He rests, and fears not the errant knives of traitors. Now, if only He could put a stop to that Goddess Aureana's obscene actions...
