THE SURVIVOR
I would really prefer to not be exalted! Silverbolt1159 would love to see my eventual return!
Uh-oh, looks like this survivor wandered a little too far from his home lair (#434590 Silverbolt1159), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him to the home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. This is not necessary, but he would be very grateful!

05/12/2020 - corrected grammar/capitalization/punctuation (Silverbolt1159)
Born to an Ice and Plague pair, Ares was named after the god of war with the hope that he would become a great warrior. However, he was instead shipped away from his clan. The young hatchling did not understand what was going on, and on the way to his new home, he and his companions - other hatchlings being shipped off to other homes - were attacked by the Shade. Ares was no match against the Shade, and instead ran off and hid until the attack was over. When he returned to see if anyone survived, he was shocked to discover he was the only one to survive, and only because he was a coward.

Ares resented his cowardice, becoming a wanderer for a while and training when he could. He came across the HollowShade clan, cautious at first, but welcomed despite his appearance. He had realized why his parents had shipped him away, as he was horrid looking. Ares found he hungered for knowledge of other clans as well as to become stronger so that some day he could fight against the Shade and get his revenge.

TRAVEL LOG

01/01/2020, The Wastes, Unknown
He needed knowledge. Dark knowledge. Only the power of the dark arts would be able to defeat the Shade, so he resolved that he must search. In his dreams, he heard whispers of an ancient being, willing to share what they knew. Ares had to find the elusive figure, to learn, to overcome his enemy. Perseverance, months of searching, endless tunnels, rivers, drylands, forests, cliffs. On the brink of collapse, overcome with anger he flew out above the large expanse of the mysterious ocean. Storms began to pick up, he couldn't fly back, he thought it was the end.

Ares awoke to a dry wasteland, full of sand and dead brush. But, more importantly, he awoke to a band of dragons. Four ancient gods stood above him; a large Imperial rising above the rest, shielding them from the merciless sun. An abnormally large Wildclaw stepped forward, finally opening his glowing eyes. His voice rang out loud as if many were speaking with him, "You have courage, we accept your inquiry for our power. Welcome to the realm of the enlightened."

Thanases, the Wildclaw, trained Ares as much as possible, but Ares knew he had to move on. He had gained a much better understanding of magic, and methods of eradicating the shade. He said his goodbyes and arrived back in Sorneith, looking for his next adventure.

03/01/2020, Capilano Outpost, Lightning
Every war needs warriors. Every warrior needs companions. When Ares showed up (well, more like crash-landed) on Capilano Outpost's doorstep, Ara was relatively quick to trust him after he'd spent a few days in the healer's den. The healer herself, Ieuan, was not as welcoming; being a creature of magic, she sensed something... dark... within Ares. She avoided him as much as possible while he recuperated. Though he insisted he felt well and strong, he would stumble around the cave system and clutch his head as if in pain every so often.

Days went by, and Ara deemed Ares fit for battle. The Beastclans came, as they always eventually did, and Ares fought gallantly with his newfound comrades. He was physically the strongest of the Outpost's fighters, thanks to his sheer size and the training he'd recieved from the mysterious Wildclaw he refused to speak much about. In time, Ares learned that Capilano's dragons tended to have an affinity for magic, and he was mystified. Magic had never come to Ares easily, and he was thoroughly confused by how effortlessly his den-mates tapped into the heart of Sornieth. It almost... concerned him... like it was too easy, like they shouldn't have been able to do those things, like maybe they weren't dragons. Paranoid thoughts ran through Ares' head. Was there more to Capilano than a war outpost? Were these dragons connected to the core of Sornieth or were they too powerful, more otherworldly? Were they closer to gods, or closer to the Shade?

More Beasts attacked the outpost, each battalion more ferocious than the last - but none as power-hungry and desperate as Ares. He fought hard, and easily earned the praise of the other dragons. Ara awarded him with old gauntlets that he'd scrounged up from who-knows-where; they were rusted and dull, but they belonged to Ares. Now that he had what he needed, it was time to move on. He still had the Shade to hunt, after all.

18/01/2020, Iceborn Clan, Ice
The small, tightly knit clan, was an infectiously relaxing atmosphere. The way the clan seemed so casual and relaxed with one another was a cautiously welcome break from the fighting he'd been enduring for so long, but it took a long time for Ares to let his guard down. He'd been trudging the nearly impossible to navigate, ever-moving landscape, of the Frigid Floes for days until he finally spotted color and heard music. Despite his rough exterior, he was welcomed into the fun-loving clan with open arms.

Tired and still healing from his wounds from his last battles, he generally stayed away from the merriment and festivities, preferring to watch or listen from afar, holed up in his own temporary den. Nightmares plagued him, the ever-present fear of this seemingly unprepared clan being attacked in the same vicious way his last clan had been, that none of the joyous family would be spared. He was initially dismissive and stressed when Cicero approached him. The large Gaoler gave him space though, just remaining near him, there when he woke up from the nightmares, helping tend to his wounds.

Eventually, Ares opened up to him, Cicero listening carefully as he shared his fears. In return, once he was done spilling his guts, Cicero showed him his own magic, the deep, older magic, his ice sight, the deeper mechanisms of how the clan worked together to protect each other, and pretty soon Ares started to feel a little more comfortable. The joyous nature of the clan eventually took his walls down and Ares relaxed slightly. He got to know the other members of the clan, eventually forming a strong bond with the comedically pompous and perpetually confused Princely, the two of them quickly spending more of their time together.

Ares taught Princely how to defend himself, and Princely taught Ares how to relax and let himself be pampered a little. Somewhat of a romance blossomed between the pair, and when Ares did decide it was time to move on, Princely left a heart-shaped scratch on his battered old gauntlets.

Relaxation and recovery were good, but Ares still had more work to do. He had the Shade to fight and his own skills to improve, and he wasn't a dragon who ever intended to settle down. In a heartfelt sendoff from the clan, Ares took to the air during a clear day to find his next battle.

04/02/2020, Silver Rescue Team, Wandering Contagion
Ares came upon a clan of nice and sweet dragons. The first to greet him was Blinky, a hyperactive pink Fae. He talked too quickly for Ares liking but he enjoyed his company while he toured the areas of the territory. Blinky also explained that the clan was a rescue group that helped search, find, and save other dragons. Ares thought that was very cute. But the plague-like area unsettled him; how can such dragons make a home in a rotten wasteland like this.

After the nice little tour Blinky showed him the other members of the group. The majority of them were very friendly except for one black Fae. She didn’t say much or even hello for that matter. Maybe she was shy? The number of Faes in this rescue group was strange. Who knew these small little creatures could have so much teamwork? After he settled down inside the lair of this rescue group another soft-spoken black Fae named Chassyth offered him some tea. He kindly accepted and the two started warming up to each other.

Chassyth asked a lot of questions; she seemed to be the curious type but he didn’t mind as she did not become too annoying with it. He shared the stories of his battles. Chassyth was very fascinated by him. After the peaceful session, Chassyth and Ares hung out more. Everywhere Ares went Chassyth would be like a little sister and ask, “Hey wait for me!” The Fae even sat on his shoulder. It was a very good time until he had to depart. Chassyth was sad about this but gave him some things before he left - her own little coat and something extra to keep so he can remember her. He accepted the gifts and flew off watching the Plague Flight lands disappear.

19/02/2020, World Vers. 9, Cloudscrape Crags
Ares landed rather heavily on the ice after he had noticed a small herd of six Wildclaws had been following him. Understandably, he was wary as he landed, not knowing what it was that the Wildclaws wanted. The dragon at the front hastily introduced himself as Caligo, the leader of their patrol group. The others gave varying responses to Ares, who told them he was simply wandering the realm.

The Wildclaws guided him to their territory which was large and expansive. Within the clan, each dragon seemed to have their role to fill and looked almost too busy to talk to Ares. However, two of the Wildclaws from the patrol group, Vesta and Demetria, quickly bonded with Ares over the shared experience of being named after a god. They hung around while some Pearlcatchers set up a tent for him.

Rather quickly, the seemingly strict and quiet clan revealed themselves to be nothing of the sort. From the moment Ares woke up, to the moment he closed his eyes, the clan seemed to be in a constant frenzy to get things done and party. He didn't think he could withstand the chaos for much longer. Sure, they were friendly and helpful, but he could never imagine why dragons would choose to stay here. Of course, there were moments in which the constant movement of the clan seemed almost peaceful. Ares supposed that was why some of the more stoic dragons stayed.

During his stay, Ares hung around the Music Makers, as they called themselves. When he mentioned the Shade, one Imperial, Io, gave him what little information there was in the clan. After that, Ares almost clung to Io like a leech. Io, who was cool-headed and much more quiet and shy than Ares seemed uncomfortable at first, but quickly warmed up. Ares found himself having soft conversations in the dark with Io about anything that came to mind.

However, the clan was too boisterous for his taste, no matter how much he fancied Io. The clan gave him an almost ceremonial sendoff, making sure that he knew he was welcome back anytime. Io, in his great worry for Ares, gave him a large bag full of supplies. With enough provisions to last him a month, Ares flew off.

20/02/2020, Ti'lo unan Yael'lo, Gorge-on-Yael'lo, Greatwyrm's Breach
The journey to Dragonhome from the Southern Icefields was long and hard, but one Ares was determined to make. He had heard that The Pillar of the World once protected Sornieth from the Shade; whatever that power was, he wanted to know it, to harness it to aid in his own quest to defeat the primordial destruction. With his food supplies and wing strength exhausted, he had taken to following the great chasm of the Greatwyrm's Breach on foot. As he drank from a small pool at the edge of the Shattered Plain a voice rang out.

"Interesting. This is not the place one expects to chance a meeting with our kind."

Ares looked up to see a Coatl female the color of the forest, adorned with bones, leaves, and inscribed beads that almost covered her scars.

"What do you mean, stranger? What relationship do we share?"

"Poor dear," the coatl cooed, striding forward, "how confusing, to live in such ignorance. But I am kind, I will not withhold what you desire. We are the Shade-blessed. Those chosen few, born with such strength of body and mind that the Shade believed us perfect vessels. Whose strength of soul and will was underestimated." She stood before Ares, who felt that she towered over him despite her smaller size. "We are the lucky few that have taken the Shade's power for ourselves, who can harness that fathomless magic for our own purposes. Come with me, young blood, back to my clan, act as my apprentice."

"You cannot speak the truth!" Ares exclaimed in rage and fear. "I am the enemy of the Shade! A great warrior who will drive that corruption from this world!"

The coatl laughed in his face with a voice of glass shards and shifting leaves. "Ah, the foolishness of youth! You misunderstand me. Though we may have use of the Shade's power, we are in complete control. Tell me young blood, you quite clearly hold a vendetta against the Shade; what could be a greater defeat for it to experience than to be destroyed by its own ability?"

The anger drained from Ares as he considered the coatl's words. She made a tempting offer. Although he despised the idea of being one of these "Shade-blessed", of having the Shade's power inside him... to turn the Shade's own power against it... what better way to prove his superiority over it? Setting his jaw in determination, he spoke.

"My name is Ares, and I am pleased to accept your offer of apprenticeship."

"Lovely, young Ares! You may call me Tr'laeg. Come now, the clan will be quite interested to meet you."

Tr'laeg turned away from Ares, walking towards the great canyon in the distance. Ares followed dutifully. He couldn't help but feel excitement at the prospect of his new apprenticeship and gaining the power Tr'laeg had promised him.
