There are three things all wise men fear: the Sea in a storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.

____Thunder crashed. A piercing cry rang out across the deck. Kveykva just wrenched the wheel of the ship the other way, extending his awareness of the water to the churning sea that was currently tossing The Architect like a leaf in the wind. The waves raged at him, screaming their anger as they pummeled the ship. The skydancer could hardly hear the snapper beside him shout over the wind: ____“Any luck there, good chap?” ____Kveykva curled his claws into the wood of the deck. By the Eleven, Dani had had sense enough to hole up in the crew quarters, but some things just couldn’t get through the snapper’s thick skull. The air was too rough to fly through without getting pummeled to pieces, and Tidelord knew that the sea would rip their ship to shreds if they tried to dive through. “No, Warrington. Get back in the crew quarters.” His voice was rough from the salt water, but he couldn’t remember a time when it wasn’t. ____The snapper, captain of the submarine, just grumbled and situated himself even more firmly on deck. ____A shrieking built from somewhere on the forecastle, ringing across the ship like a bell. A concerning sound on its own, but upon recognizing it, Kveykva would’ve sworn that the water in his veins froze for a second. Architect only shrieked like that when… Gods above! A wild wave drenched the ship. He could feel heat rising from below the deckboards, sending a thick mist swirling over the deck. Ah, great, there’d be quite the party on deck in a few seconds. ____When the mist cleared, a great grey-green imperial stood on the deck. Nearly lost behind the decoration on her wings, a blue-feathered coatl attempted to shelter himself from the storm. The imperial, smoke curling from her nostrils, horns, wings, talons, lumbered off toward the bell-like wailing. The coatl scurried over the wet wood toward Kveykva and curled around the rudder. He grinned up at the captain, all shining, sharp teeth, and Kveykva mentally prepared himself for an onslaught of words. Kveykva split his attention for a short second to greet the underfoot nuisance. ____“Kerosene.” ____“Kveykva! Quite a storm, huh?” ____Kveykva didn’t reply, busy as he was keeping the ship from capsizing. ____Kerosene kept going. “Man, we never run across ley lines anymore, we’ve gotten pretty good at avoidin’ ‘em. Guess somethin’s got our fearless captain turned all around, yeah? Maybe somethin’ about a Tidelord’s grudge? Some ancient bloodline sh-t, yadda yadda yadda, doom, etc. ect.” Kveykva began to tune out his words, the cadence of the coatl’s teasing voice melding with the roar of the ocean. ____He was brought back from his single minded struggle against the ocean by a nudge against his leg. Kerosene wrinkled his snout and rewound himself under Kveykva, using the skydancer’s body as a rainshield. He was done talking for now, thank the Tidelord. Both drakes listened as the bell-like screeching slowly turned into a high pitched whine and then faded off until the crash of the waves overshadowed it. Soon the imperial returned through the storm with a mirror, body absolutely covered in golden runes, tucked between her wings. ____“Kveykva, find us somewhere to dock. Now. An island, a wet cage, I don’t care. Just do it quick.” Without waiting for a response, she turned and vanished back belowdecks. Kveykva held back a shiver, feathers fluffing. It wasn’t that she snapped her words, though actually, that might’ve made them less chilling. It was something about her that shouldn’t exist. Something wrong, deep within. While Kerosene held much of the same aura, he didn’t bother Kveykva so much. It was built into him, natural. He forgot about it, most of the time. It was easy to pretend that the warmth radiating up into his belly was from a normal fire dragon. But with Lilith… it was in her every word, every movement, even her eyes. He didn’t like to think on it too much. ____Relative silence reigned on the deck, broken by occasional booms of thunder and, just barely making itself known over the storm, Kerosene’s muttering as he tried to get himself comfortable on the deck. ____Kveykva cut the silence: “You should go belowdecks.” He noted with slight satisfaction that Warrington was no longer visible. He’d either listened to Kveykva, or he’d fallen off. Both were fine with him. ____Kerosene simply shrugged. “Nah, I’m good chillin’ up here.” He yawned languidly and sent a small jet of flame across the already-scorched deckboards. Kveykva spared a disapproving glare for the scorch mark and its cause. ____“You’ll get sick.” ____“Haha, no, I won’t.” ____The certainty in his voice was a grim reminder. The rest of the trip was quiet until the tip of a lair broke through the clouds. ____“Oh, cool. Are these guys friends?” ____“Unsure. Likely not. Non-waters won’t be out in this storm, though, and this is a mess of a wet cage. I’d be surprised if more'n two splasher’s actually live here. We’ll go undetected for tonight, at least.” ____“D-mn, you can predict the weather now?” ____Kveykva allowed a smile. “Well, I am the Storm-breaker.” ____“Very funny. Now c’mon, drop anchor and get belowdeck already. I know you live and breathe this wet sh-t, but some of us are normal.” ____“Then maybe someone should stop holding onto my leg like a hatchling.” Kveykva disentangled his feet from Kerosene’s coils. The coatl just stuck out his tongue and, when Kveykva looked back up as he prepared the ship for the night, he caught the end of a cyan-tipped tail disappearing into the ship. ____He would later follow that tail to the food stores, to the first mate’s quarters, on a wild goose chase through the belly of the ship, and finally to the captain’s quarters. ____Kerosene slipped out of the door to the captain's quarters the next morning. A couple of hours passed before Kveykva followed, face like carved stone. |
