Kari lived in the Ostwick alienage with his parents Kielo and Shani. When he was around 12 he discovered his magic (he accidentally set a table cloth on fire, no one got hurt). His parents tried to hide the fact he was a mage, and they managed to keep it a secret for a few months but during a random magical outburst one of their neighbours saw and reported it to the Templars. When they came to collect Kari, his parents tried to stop them and hid him in a cupboard. Kari heard the altercation and them threatening to kill his parents so he came out to try and save them by going with the Templars but they ended up killing his parents anyway, in front of him (he still thinks its his fault :^)).

The Templars took him to the Ostwick circle and was treated as a prisoner, along with all the other mages there. The only person to show him kindness was a young Templar in training named Njord. They grew to be friends over time, though they had to keep it a secret, less they both get in serious trouble. Njord’s brother, Lance, favoured physically and verbally abusing Kari, because he noticed that it also hurt his brother when he did it (two birds, one stone I suppose).

Just before Kari’s Harrowing (age: nearly 17) him and Njord hatched a plan for them to escape together. Njord destroyed Kari’s Phylactery and they managed to escape, just barely. Both were severely injured, Kari near death. They ended up stumbling into Dalish territory, Clan Lavellan’s to be exact. They were hostile at first, seeing a human in Templar armour with a severely injured elf in his arms. Njord managed to explain and convince them that they had just escaped a circle and that Kari was in need of urgent care. The elves took them back to their camp, careful to make sure no one was following them.

The clan ended up taking them in, seeing how useful these two outsiders were (Kari being an extra, powerful mage, and Njord being able to help them with trade and communicating with the human world, as well as being an extra set of hands for hunting). During the years they spent with Clan Lavellan, Kari and Njord grow even closer, their relationship developing into a romantic one.

Flash forward 8 years (age: 25). Njord discovered while he was out trading one day that there was going to be a conclave to decide what happens to the mages. He told the keeper and she decided to send him and Kari to report back on what happens. Then everything goes bottom up.

Kari woke up in a cell with two strange humans staring at him. He was shackled to a chair, scared, and... alone. For the first time in a long time Njord wasn’t there. The humans berated him with questions about what happened to the conclave. They told him he was the only survivor, meaning Njord was gone too. This broke him thoroughly. Yet another person he couldn’t save.
