Biography

The water never judged them; it held them as they were, whenever they sank below its waves.

Where on land words scraped their ears like sand and when they spoke, it felt like coughing up mouthfuls of water, as soon as they felt the ocean lap their ears it was simple. They moved their fans fluidly through the water, laughing with joy at a passing school of fish, or making an expression of surprise at a manatee.

Under the water, it didn't matter that they couldn't speak with words for fear of drowning. Gestures, flicks of their tail, were more than enough. Other water dragons spoke to them like this. Nephelle's only regret was that they hadn't been born with a set of gills.

They would be forever trapped in a sort of upside-down: on land, speaking felt like drowning, while underwater felt like home.

Nephelle spiraled blissfully through the sea, all their thoughts drowned out by the rush of water over their scales and bubbles in their face. They only paused to surface for a gulp of air, or to stare wide-eyed at schools of shimmering fish.

Occasionally they would spot a Maren, out fishing or tending kelp, but besides that, they were alone. It was quiet. They smiled and let the currents carry them for a while.

They slowly became aware of an unusual cacophony. They glanced up as an enormous shadow fell over them, and the noise increased. It was like a thousand voices all shouting at once—muffled by the water, but still bursting their tranquil bubble.

With a frown, they zipped to the surface to investigate. A boat, they realized. A massive one, teeming with dragons. They were indeed clamoring about something, but Nephelle couldn't tell what. Curiosity overrode their fear, so they clamped their foreclaws over their ears and flew just high enough to peek up over the deck.

"Sing! Sing!" was all they could make out from the overlapping voices, and then Nephelle saw... her. Her eyes glittered like the jewels in her ears. Her smile made Nephelle's heart flop like a fish in their throat.

"Alright, alright, ya hooligans!" the lady boomed above the racket. "One song, then back to work!"

The crowd fell silent.

Then she sang. The cheerful tune was soon accompanied by a flute from someone in the crowd—the sweet, airy notes intertwined with the lady's rough yet lovely voice like a siren's song.

Nephelle didn't realize how close they had drifted until the lady's sharp eyes were on them.

"Well, who have we here?" she grinned. "Come to hear my singing?"

"Nephelle," they squeaked in surprise, grimacing at the grating sensation of their voice. "I'm—" they coughed, summoning every ounce of will to speak, "—sorry!" Then their throat clamped tight. They quaked under the curious gaze of all those dragons, wanting more than anything to dive back to the security of the water. Except, maybe talking to the lady with the beautiful voice.

"Well, nice to meet ya!" the lady said, gently. "You can call me Moose. I don't bite, don't be scared!"

Sorry, Nephelle signed. It's hard to talk.

"Oh, you sign?" Moose cocked her head thoughtfully. "I've seen dragons use that here and there, but never learned it myself. Maybe I'll give it a try, in case we cross paths again," she added with a wink. "In the meantime, make yourself at home! There's always room for more in my crew."
