Severrin. It felt as if that was all he was. A name. Letters. A string of sounds half murmured by himself in the darkest reassurance that he remained Severrin, even as all others looked upon him and saw nothing.

Faceless, like the darkness that enshrouded him on a night spent earning dishonest and tainted currency, his palms felt the weight of money he bled for, money he bled others for, the reeking stench of suffering permeated his lungs until he could not stomach the sights and smells of darkness. And yet, darkness seemed to be all he could be. Eyes that watched, fingers that stole and lips that parted to spill lies when needed.

Severrin felt the burden of his curse. A different face to all who came across him. He remembered pitifully little of the life he led before the curse. Familiarity belonged to the list of luxuries forever out of his desperate fingertips. There offered no creature who would see Severrin, truly see him. He came to realise much to his silent heartbreak that he could never be known, a destiny of forgottenness. Perhaps, he pondered, after the countless nights shadowing the potential targets of coin to be gotten, it was for the best. No one loved a monster. No one took the companionship of the frightful unknown. He personified the fleeting recognition entrapped within a person’s eyes, their miniscule recollection of a face in a moment in their lives that could look similar to another brief moment of another face. Severrin learned quickly that there is no such thing as a face that could ever be truly trusted. A face shining in the daylight does not remain the same in the dark. Severrin wore for the people mask upon mask, a new structure, new life into every last one of them. How easy it could be to garner trust in someone, just for a moment, while the anonymity behind the facade gnawed at Severrin’s very core.

And so he turned from his pain and brought forth a riling, seething anger. An anger at himself, at the world, at all who looked but could not see him. He tore holes through pictures of faces and snarled with wide eyes and an opened mouth at the threatening, lingering void that yearned to have him fall in. The last and final leap into a madness irreversible. Forgetting himself among his ghost sea of masks and chameleon faces. Severrin looked upon himself through the cracked, grotty mirror at a home he knew as home but could not feel within his heart, and pressed his fingertips to his reflection, wanting more than anything to dip inside the glass and pull through himself.

“I am Severrin.”

The words came like ivy thorns through his throat, engulfed in a mystery he could not bring himself to explain. He knew himself as Severrin. Severrin the assassin, the thief, the money-snatcher, the life-snatcher, manipulator of trust and warper of recognition. The elusive, alluring darkness, the entrenching, tangling shadows. He knew he was Severrin. But his heart stung, his chest tightened and his teeth clenched. Gods, how he wanted to ask his cursed reflection, staring doll-eyed back at him, wearing his face, so blind to the reality of Severrin’s fate. Gods, how he wanted to ask.

’Who is Severrin?’

by PunchingSolas

"...I'll make sure you crack and fall!"

Quote:
Hark, dishonest, do you dare
To steep in darkness unaware?
The bloody bandages wayward wrap,
The locket closes with a snap;
Plumes that hide a starving heart,
Rubies bind to do their part
To seal the dripping madness there:
Plunge in the knife against the tear.

A weeping darkness downwards brings
The thief whose lips no longer sing
Of daring deeds, of friends, of faith;
All these things will have no place
Where they who spiral roundabout
In power have their last fallout.
Go forward, sinner, yet beware:
Your limbs are laid against the snare.
