I have been many things over my long life. Caretaker of the Great Timekeeper is the least odious of them all. Sigmund would tell me my standards are far too low, but if you spent a year of your life rebuilt into a vacuum cleaner you would agree. Here, I wind the timekeepers, prevent the Keeper and Sigmund from bickering, and when Orvus or his spawn are otherwise occupied I keep the Zoni entertained. It is not glamourous, but it is never boring, and it is easy.

...Normally, it is easy. Orvus' spawn does not exist yet at this point in the timeline, and if Sigmund does not find him it may be that he will never exist. I have no desire to fulfill his role amongst the Zoni - but if the paradox is not fixed, that is exactly what must happen. I suspect I would not survive it; I am sure that Sigmund knows, but he has been kind enough to keep that to himself. I suppose this universe's sapient life in general might not survive it, but I do not particularly care - which is part of the problem. Sigmund knows me well enough by now to not ask, at least.

I trust Sigmund, I trust Orvus, and I am loathe to say it but I trust my damned clone too. I do not like to take things on faith, but this time I must. I will maintain those functions of the Timekeeper that require outside assistance, I will keep the Zoni from causing unrestrained destruction - and I will have faith that they will succeed in their mad plan.

I suppose I will not have to worry for long if they do not.
