The Ringmaster
'Good evening gents, step right up into my circus! I'm the ringmaster and this is where the work is!'

The crowd flood into the big-top tent. You and your friends are swept along with them, caught up in the bright colours and loud music. You find a few empty seats surprisingly close to the stage, uncomfortable and sticky from drinks spilled on them.

As you all sit down, the lights dim and the chatter of the crowd dies down. A spotlight settles on the center of the empty stage.
*BANG*
A flash of smoke and firecrackers, fireworks fly into the top of the tent, exploding into colourful sparks that gently rain down onto the ooh and aah-ing audience. Some of the younger dragons poke out their tongues, trying to catch the sparkles.
When the smoke clears, a spiral stands in the center of the stage, her colourful clothes seem to be changing hue as the coloured lights spin over her. She smiles wide, and spreads her arms out, taking in the cheer of the crowd.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Dragons and Beastfolk! One and all! Welcome, to the Circus of Enigmas!"

she crows, voice ringing loudly through the tent, and spirals into the air, leaving a trail of glitter behind her. She flies over the audience, circling the tent.

"What a show you will see tonight! We have magicians who will mystify you, freaks who you frighten you, harlequins who will humor you, and a theater troupe who's act will surely bring you to tears"

As she circles the tent, she flies by you, and a chill runs down your spine. You could swear you hear a strange whispering in your ear, but you can't make out what it says.

The spiral lands back on the stage and takes a bow.

"Thank you, thank you! Now, to introduce myself! I am Polyxena!"

She taps her cane on the stage a few times, and the tip of it begins to glow. She raises it in the air, and it leaves a glowing trail behind it, which she uses to write out her name in the air. After a moment, it fades away.

"Your ringmaster, gratious host, and your guide through tonights events"

The crowd applaud, and you clap along with them, but something doesn't feel quite right. The lights are dizzying, and no matter how hard you concentrate you can't focus on any single part of Polyxena, always moving, always changing colours under the lights.
For a moment, while flaunting about the stage and talking about the performances, she stands still, and you try to get a good look at her. Are those... eyes? were her claws always that sharp? But before you can bring it up to your friends, Polyxena has called your attention back to her with a dramatic finish, involving her spiraling into the air again, leaving her top hat on the stage, and diving down into it, disappearing into the small hat, and then reappearing with a flash among the audience themselves.
When she gets back to the stage, she takes another bow, putting her top hat back on.

She looks out over the audience, and her gaze stops, red eyes settling on you. you feel your heart leap into your throat. Her grin widens, showing rows of too-sharp teeth, like a basilisk staring down it's prey.
Then, she laughs and her expressions softens as looks over the rest of the audience again. You turn to ask your friends if they noticed what just happened, but they're utterly enraptured by Polyxena.

"Now, I've kept you all waiting long enough! Prepare yourselves folks, for the greatest show on Sornieth!"

All the lights and music die, and the crowd murmurs in confusion.
Something brushes past your ear, and you have to stop yourself from crying out in surprise.
Someone in the audience screams, and the fear within the tent rises as unnatural figures begin to dance in the shadows. Your sight swirls as your eyes try to adjust to the darkness, and you swear you see eyes watching you from the darkness, hear giggling coming from right behind you, smell a strange sulfur-ish scent.
Dim lights whir back to life, spinning around the tent dizzyingly, too dim to let you properly see anything. The figure of Polyxena slips through the shadows, flying around the tent at high speed. Her voice, somehow different, more chilling now, whispers from the shadows, impossible to pinpoint to one place.

"Let go of your inhibitions! Forget your fears! Tonight, reality doesn't exist outside of this tent! The world is yours to hold in your hands, so why not enjoy it? Mould it to your whims! Dreams and nightmares are one and the same, life and death are irrelevant, we're all one and the same!
Listen with your eyes, and see with your ears, taste what you touch and let your mind leave your body!
We've only got 12 hours 'til the party's done, so enjoy it while it lasts! Who knows what might happen once it's over?
Welcome my friends, to the Circus of Enigmas!"
