Named for their supposed resemblance to the darkened sludge that is said to drip from the shadow god's eyes, these structures are surprisingly robust; if chipped off, they can be used as chisels or nails.

Alpine is better known as "Shade and Dusk's great grandson". He does not really want that title, however. He only has a fraction of their blood, yes? He became interested in Laspi's taxonomy, and she allowed him to take one of her bird skulls to wear on his shoulder. It is important to remember that unlike his great-uncle, Gladiolus, Alpine's anxieties extend deeper than just not wanting massive numbers of attention. Out of fear, he always acted like the perfect heir to clan leadership, never questioning Shade and Dusk's decisions.

In an attempt to separate himself from the rest of his family, he began living a double life, his alter ego being the "Night Phantom". In places far from home, he is not regarded as a prince; he acts like a completely different person. Instead, he is a feared fae who enjoys inflicting harm and has shadow magic that can blind dragons temporarily. He only appears in the middle of the endless night, when the sky is the darkest and the moon is at its highest. This has made him some sort of urban legend across the Tangled Wood and the surrounding regions. Due to his abilities, the Night Phantom is unknowingly responsible for the accidental deaths of quite a few dragons...

Time passed, and Shade and Dusk grew more and more impatient with Alpine not taking a mate. So, one day, they did it for him. They forced him and another dragon named Aurum together, and reluctantly, they agreed to produce the next generation. They had two children together. While one went to serve the Shadowbinder, the other stayed behind in Shade's clan, unaware of Alpine's secrets.
