Garnet
the Rare Jewel

Garnet is one of the most valued and thus also heavily guarded dragons in the whole clan. She lives in the clan's Vault, burrying herself into the treasures and spending most of her time sleeping in the riches, often leaving only the top of her head and the spines of her back above the coins and gemstones to show. The thing that makes her so special, is her ability to create jewels and gemstones of any kind she wishes! It may not sound anything special at first, but where an adept Earth dragon may be able to create one sort of gemstones in small quantities, Garnet is able to create a whole mountain made of pure diamond, if she so desires. Which means that she's both a money maker and a deathly weapon...

Luckily for the clan, Garnet is overall quite calm and sophisticated for a hatchling, and she has a very proud and confident stance with an intelligent and striking gaze. Her often adult-like behaviour is most likely due to the fact that she has been revered her whole life like a saint or even a deity because of her powers. Even tho Garnet is polite and respectful most of the time to other dragons, there is only two dragons who she truly looks up to, the most important and dear of those two being her big brother, Agate.

Agate and Garnet share a strong bond and the siblings love each other dearly. They also seem to have some sort of magical connection, as both of the siblings can sense how the other is feeling from miles away, or even if the other has been injured or is in danger. Garnet's ability to sense Agate isn't quite as strong and precise as her brother's. This might be because she's still a hatchling and this ability hasn't fully matured in her yet. However, this ability is the reason why Agate is able to predict when his sister is having a bad day and thus pay her a visit to calm her down.

As one might already guess, since Garnet is an eternally youthful dragon, she can have childish tantrums from time to time, which can be extremely dangerous from a dragon of that power... There was once a time when Agate was assigned elsewhere and couldn't come to calm her down and thus she ended up releasing a huge wave of crystals that impaled and killed the two Vault guardians at the time, after which Atira has been very careful to not send Agate on missions that are too far away from the clan.

Nobody knows exactly how these two siblings came to be or who were their parents, as when they were only eggs, they were left to be guarded by an elemental acolyte of the Earthshaker, a huge granite guardian, who shielded the two eggs from rain and harsh sunlight with it's own body. The two siblings got their names from the looks of their eggs: Agate's egg was quite small and colorful, and it looked like someone would have shaped and polished an egg out of banded agate. Garnet's egg was a huge rough textured chunk of gemstone that looked like an almandine garnet, and which shape only vaguely reminded one of an egg. Both eggs had a powerful magical aura around them, Agate's egg radiating of strong defensive magic that seemed to shield the two eggs from any sort of magical harm, and Garnet's egg blazing of immense offensive power that overwhelmed any magically attuned creature who came too near of the eggs.

Years passed and the two eggs remained untouched, as their magical aura made dragons to believe them being some sort of sacred ancient artifacts, and they treated them and their motionless guardian as an altar where they went to pray for good fortune from the deities. After every passing Rockbreaker's Ceremony their auras seemed to grow stronger, which eventually attracted even Atira's attention, and during the next Rockbreaker's Ceremony she went to investigate this unofficial shrine with a small group of dragons. The place was crowded with dragons and as Atira and her group came close, the two eggs started to glow and pulsate an overwhelmingly strong magical power, that sent any weaker or smaller dragons flying a few meters back from the spot they were standing. Thanks to Atira's physical power and stature, she only felt a mere zephyr sweeping over her, and she immediately ordered her companions to help other dragons to get somewhere safer. Atira herself went head-on towards these "artifacts", and as she came closer and closer to them, they started sending even stronger winds that shook even Atira, forcing her to use all of her strength to get to the eggs. As she finally got close enough to be able to touch the eggs, the smaller egg's shell cracked and the whole place was drowned in a blinding light that made even Atira to take a few steps back. As the light faded, so did the raging magic, revealing a small colorful nocturne sitting now on top of the granite guardian's shoulder, watching and calculating carefully whether Atira was a friend or foe. He had the most intense glowing eyes that were similar to the now awakened granite guardian. And before Atira could say anything, a voice echoed:

"We need a safe place for my sister. We need a home where she can be protected until it's her time to hatch."

Atira understood immediately that he was no ordinary hatchling, nor his yet to be hatched sister. This little one knew how to speak telephaticly, and the protective power of his aura reminded Atira of Earthshaker, as well as those glowing eyes. She gave him a slight nod, and the little nocturne nodded back as a thank you. He then gave the granite guardian a small tap to it's back with his tail, resulting this colossal creature to stand up and to lift the bigger egg on it's arms, ready to be moved to their new home.

"Lead the way", the small nocturne's voice echoed, as they followed Atira to the clan.

Time passed and the hatchling got the name Agate. He became a young adult, but he never left by her so called sister's side, nor did his familiar. Atira tried her best to find out where they came from, but nobody seemed to know anything about them. Even Agate couldn't really answer to this, as he only said that he knew that he was meant to be there for his sister and protect her.

And when finally the day came that Garnet hatched, it was something that Atira nor her clan would never forget...

On the day of her hatching, Agate had a vision that the excess power released from the hatching would cause tremendous destruction to the surrounding area, so he asked if they could move her to somewhere in the Shattered Plains where there was likely nobody around to get hurt. He asked that only Atira would come to secure the hatching with him and his familiar, as Agate wouldn't be able to shield any others against her sister. Other clan members weren't too happy about this and they insisted Atira to stay with the clan. Despite the clan's wishes Atira agreed to Agate's request, but they were already too late... They had only made it to the border of the clan's domain, when suddenly the sky started to go black, and dark heavy clouds started swirling just above the place they stood. The air became thick and there was a strong magical surge in the air that made Atira feel restless and uneasy. The serious expression on Agate's face didn't help at all, and Atira started to feel worried for her clan's safety.

"Shouldn't we hurry?" she asked as they had stopped to look the blackened sky. The expression on Agate's face made Atira's stomach twist from fear, and in the same second she turned to look back at her clan, the egg started to pulsate powerful magic with an unstable manner that made Atira to adjust her balance. Agate ran bewteen Atira and the egg.

"Now is too late. She's going to hatch here."

A vague blueish sphere appeared as Agate summoned protective barrier to shield them from the egg's power. With every pulse, cracks started to appear on the egg's shell, and red crystals started to form on the land around the egg. Strong magical energies stirred in the air, as the crystalline waves spread further and further from the egg. Only a small area around Agate and Atira seemed to stay in it's natural state. After every pulse and crack in the shell, the crystal waves grew stronger and more violent, forming humongous spikes and clusters or crystals that would easily impale even the most thick scaled dragon. Atira started to get really worried for her clan, as the crystals started to spread closer and closer to the clan. The moment had felt like an eternity, when finally the egg's shell cracked open, but that was when all hell broke loose... An overwhelmingly strong wind sent Atira flying, and when she lift her head to see the hatchling, she could only see a blurry silhouette rising from the egg, before a strong blast wave sent her flying all the way back to the clan. She went right through a wall but before the whole clan had any time to react, she was immediately followed by a dense barrage of crystal shards. Agonizing screams filled the air as the shards pierced through dragon scales like knife cuts butter. Atira rushed to help her comrades, as a huge wave of crystal clusters emerged from the ground, looking like they were going to swoop the whole clan away. Luckily Agate was fast enough and he summoned a shield that made the crystal wave to stop and set where it had hit Agate's magical shield. But the danger was far from over.

With this small window of time she had been just given, she ordered everyone to retreat as far as possible and her most capable warrior to protect civilians and each other with magic and shields. Agate assisted as much as he could, but even he couldn't protect everyone from his sister's overflowing powers.

A sharp hissing shriek cut through the air and made Atira to turn into a battlestance as she turned to look what was coming her way. An abnormally huge hatchling emerged from the distance, and in one swoop flew towards Atira with a barrage of flying crystal shards following her, and like an ocean moves with the moon, all the crystals formed on the ground moved like an ocean wave, quickly circling Atira and Agate, who had flown to her side into this spiky circle of crystals. The newly emerged hatchling came eye to eye with Atira. She had a very intimidating aura that overflowed with immense magical pressure that would make a weaker dragon to pass out. Small crystal shards swirled in the air around them as she came closer to Atira, and every now and then a piece would cut a little her scales, but she refused to move a muscle. This newly emerged ridgeback gave a piercing gaze to Atira with her gemstone-like eyes, but Atira still refused to back away, and said with a calm voice:

"We don't want any harm to you. Please, calm your powers before anyone else gets hurt."

The hatchling's mind was clearly clouded by her awakened powers, as she seemed to act purely with the guide of her primal instincts. As she was just about to channel the crystal wave circling them to pierce this guardian that she saw as a threat, Agate finished a spell he had been silently incanting and flew in front of her, giving her a small kiss on her forehead, sending the hatcling to sleep immediately. As the ridgeback dropped down on Atira's arms, all the crystals collapsed to the ground. The sky cleared, and the ominous magic in the air was gone.

After the incident, those who had survived without major injuries helped to clean the clan's domain from the shards, making some nice profit at the same time by selling the bigger clusters. The clan members started to call this gemstone maker by the name Garnet. The clan had very mixed feelings of this new member, as where some revered her for her power and beauty and described her as "what must only be the harbinger of the deities", others feared her for the destruction and pain she had caused so far. Atira was torn between the two points of view her comrades shared, but eventually she saw protecting this possible herald of the deities as her responsibility for the Earthshaker, and so the clan bend to her will despite their doubts.

The first thing that had to be decided and arranged was where Garnet would be living, and after a good while of thinking and planning, it was decided that the most safe place in the whole clan was the clan's Vault chambers. Some adjustments had to be done just in case, and so the Vault chamber's walls were thickened with magically reinforced metals and warded with strong defensive spells and incantations. The interior design was polished and altered to look pleasing to Garnet, and the Vault indeed now looked like a treasure room of gods with it's dimly lit golden walls and all the silks and other fine fabrics she could curl up to sleep in, not to forget all the mountains of treasures and valuables in there. The smell of the most finest sorts of incense filled the Vault to calm her down. She felt like she'd been worshipped for this new den she had been given, and the feeling of being revered pleased her greatly, even tho she didn't ask nor intentionally seek for it. She also wanted to correspond for the worship and respect she was treated with with a proper sophisticated behavior, respectful manners and kindness towards others, which quickly won over even the most doubtful dragons. She, and the Vault, were also provided with round-the-clock guarding by the finest of warriors in the clan, and the presence of her dear brother anytime she wished.

Garnet has really adapted and grown to love the attention and special treatment she gets, and wouldn't want to live any other kind of life that she now lives. Even if she seems sometimes taking her lifestyle for granted, she actually treats many small gifts and special treats with a childlike excitement and joy when she's alone, and she is actually very grateful for the things she has, especially regarding her food! She highly enjoys that she gets the first pick of the day's seafood and the clan's most talented cooks prepare her meals to her liking, and they indeed have learned to make the best kind of crystal roasted scaleskin marlin and ringscale arowana over the years! She actually appreaciates her carefully crafted meals so much that the other dragon she truly admires besides her own brother, is the clan's head chef Baileys, whom she nearly worships for his divine dishes. Garnet often asks to visit the clan's kitchen so that she can see her idol at work, and Baileys even agrees to come to her to cook if he has the spare time to do so. It might sound like the weirdest thing, but to this hatchling the making of delicious foods and treats is the most alluring kind of magic she knows! And who could blame her, she is a hatchling after all.

Notable Relationships

Agate, big brother

Even tho Agate is smaller than Garnet, she always listens her big brother. When Garnet is in a bad mood and starts using her abilities in a dangerous manner, Agate will always pop up to come calm her down by just being there beside his little sister. The two siblings have a really strong bond and they seem to share some sort of magical connection to each other, which is why Agate will know when to visit Garnet before she gets an actual fullblown tantrum and turns the whole place into crystal. Like any hatchling, she might get a bit jealous if she feels like Agate is giving his attention too much to someone else, starting to do childish things to get his attention.

Baileys, idol

Like said before: to Garnet cooks are the most powerful magicians of all, and thus she absolutely adores the head chef of the clan. She seems him as a dragon worthy to be called as a god, and because of this she never declines any food Baileys offers her. This can be extremely handy when there's not Garnet's favorite food available, but instead he can offer "a special dish" instead. Works everytime.
