He had been abandoned by his clan for being born different, having strange eyes that looked more suitable for an insect than a dragon. The clan elders, believing he was cursed, quickly discarded him, and left him to an unknown fate in the Emberglow Hearth. Fortunately, that fate happened to cross the path of a passing member of the Forge Warden clan, who took one look and the dying hatchling and knew exactly what had happened to him. Clans all over Sorneith were reporting strange abnormalities in their hatchlings that coincided with the changing world, and many were cast aside out of fear. However, the small Fire clan did not see a curse, but another child of the Flamecaller. The tiny ridgeback was named, given a home and a new family who loved him when others would not.

Even with his shaky start in life, the little ridgeback grew large and strong. He was often caught sneaking off into the forge, where he would play with ingots and pieces of scrap. When he aged and his fiery breath began to develop, he would spend hours melting or welding metal, endlessly fascinated by what he could construct. Forgemaster Resdayn saw his talent and curiosity building quickly, and soon put forth the invitation to work the clan's forge and learn the craft. Oikara accepted, if only to keep the adults off his spines for playing in such a place, but soon realized he had a natural talent for creating fabulous statues and figures. When not learning the trade, he spends as much time as possible with his mate, Jedaira.
