Maelstrom is a hatchling that is noticeably small for her breed, with freshly fledged leather wings that are just long enough for her to use in flight, provided that there is wind. Her whiskers are curly, and the texture of her fur is not unlike a chinchilla's: extremely thick, soft and cottony to the touch, and difficult to dry. Because of this, she only takes dust baths. Her scales are very solid to ensure that sand, dirt, and otherwise gets in between them, but sometimes they behave and move like bird feathers.

The story of Maelstrom's upbringing is not a happy one, so she prefers not to speak anything of it. Hatching alone in what her parents assumed as a dud nest in the Windswept Plateau is as far as she will go. She is a cheerful character, and it is easy for her to bring a smile to any dragon she is spending time with. She is yet to set up her own individual nest, as she likes to nestle up to any Clanmate that she considers friendly enough to do so during resting hours. She likes to spend most of her time with Ruzomberok, who takes care of Mabruk's familiars, and Cittagazze, who recovered her from the Wind territory in the first place on the way back from a courier trip. She assists the former by keeping the familiars in question occupied, as she takes up most of her day playing with them with a myriad of toys. She has an adventurous streak and likes the idea of exploring beyond the lair, even though she has never gotten the chance to do so ever since her arrival. She has a strange liking to apricots.
