The Lantern Keeper

SUMMARY

Lampwood was once a dragon. They remember little of their past, and who they were in life. What few details they do know paint a relatively unclear picture: a traveler, who got lost one dark winter's night, and died alone in the snow. Their spirit clung to their body- now they exist as a half decayed spirit, sustained by ice magic and the wood of that old forest. In their post death wanderings they were drawn to the Rivensong, a clan of travelers so much like themselves in their past life.

A benevolent spirit, Lampwood's visage is still terrifying to strangers unfamiliar with them. As such they often guard travelers from a distance. They alone are responsible for keeping the lanterns that mark the clan's territory and guide dragons through it. Working at night, they are more often seen in the winter, when the darkness lasts longer. Willing to share a cup of tea with any dragon who's not intimated by their appearance, they are a quiet, lonely and friendly spirit. The clan honors their work and presence by leaving gifts at the lantern tree- where Lampwood seems to rest when they are not busy.
HISTORY

The name and past of Lampwood is long forgotten. Once a traveler wandering Sorneith, the night of their death found them caught in the darkness of a large blizzard. All they had to navigate in their travel was a little glimmer of light from a distant lantern. They struggled forward, seeking safety. Eventually they found their way to the lantern, but they were already succumbing from the cold. Curling up underneath the tree it was hanging from to rest, they never woke up again. Their spirit clung to the light of the lantern, even as their body was slowly covered in the snow.

Emerging again as a half decayed body, reanimated by magic and the wood from the forest, Lampwood carried that first lamp with them. The spirit wandered through the forests of Sornieth, occasionally stumbling upon individual dragons or accidentally terrifying the occasional beastclan member. It took some time, but eventually they found themselves near the territory of the Rivensong clan. The call of the Windsinger drew them to the clan- a group of travelers made good company for their spirit. At first the clan was puzzled, but eventually they were welcomed with open arms.

They gradually gravitated towards the largest tree at the edge of the clan's main territory to reside in. Known now as the lantern tree, aptly named for the many lanterns hanging from its branches, clan members leave gifts and offerings there to honor Lampwood's presence. While not one of the more popular spots to visit within clan territory, the dragons still appreciate what Lampwood does and will even occasionally seek them out to share some tea with the spirit.
