______Cygnus is one of the few employees originally from the area. He has been somewhat aware of the existence of the grocery store for a while before getting the job. Most others from the area are also casually aware of the grocery store, it's weird but has good deals and great selection so nobody really complains about it. He has lived through most of his childhood reading books and studying arcane magic alone in his room, occasionally going outside to join his mother hunting. His mother, a guardian dragon, is a lot more battle ready and believes more in being self-sustaining rather than relying on anyone else for the sake of convenience. So he never truly been inside the store.
Besides that it was a quiet yet comfortable life. Occasionally other dragons would move in or out from the area, but strangely despite being so close to the grocery store he never met anyone who worked there. It was a detail he never paid attention to until much later.
______It was a cold winter day, much colder than previous years. It didn't help much that his mother has disappeared just a few days ago and the town was particularly quiet. Everyone he tried to visit for help was seemingly not home, he wasn't sure why he tried when the lights were off this night, the only thing letting him see was a small magic fuelled lantern he carried in his mouth. Sighing after trying one last time on another door he turned around, snow crunching under his feet. His legs were starting to get numb from the cold so he figured it was probably best to go back inside and warm up.
The snowfall was only growing more intense, snowflakes clumped together in the air to mercilessly cover every surface they could reach. It was too difficult to see where home even was at this point, he just needed to find somewhere to wait things out, but it was too difficult to see anywhere in the snowstorm. His thoughts were cut off when he heard a voice in the distance, was someone else stuck out in the snowstorm as well? If nothing else they could probably huddle together for warmth, he didn't like the idea of being so close to another dragon but in the cold he was starting to get desperate.
The voice called out again, it sounded like the wail of a young hatchling. That set off alarms in Cygnus' head, sure he wasn't very old himself but a younger hatchling would be in even more danger. Figuring he had not much to lose since he couldn't find his way home anyway he headed towards the noise, the snow and wind only growing more intense and pelting down on him. As he approached the hatchling the wailing grew louder before stopping. Cygnus stood still, no point getting more lost than he already was and to just wait to hear the only breacon of hope he had in this weather.
By this point the frost was burning and his muscles ached, the fresh snow in front of him looked so soft and was beckoning for him to rest a bit. Putting down the lantern he sat down in the snow, he stretched out a wing from under his cloak into the snowstorm and allowed some fire magic to spark to life in his claws, his wing shielding the tiny flame from the storm. It wasn't much since he was still learning but it brought some much needed warmth into his small body.
His concentration was interrupted by a set of glowing eyes watching him from a distance. Despite how much the snow obscured the visibility those eyes pierced through it all, carefully watching him as if deciding wether he was a threat or not. Extinguishing the fire spell and cautiously picking up his lantern he never broke eye contact with whatever was watching him. A small thing but his mother made sure he made it a habit to never lose sight of a potential threat.
Upon closer inspection the eyes were quite low down, belonging to something a bit smaller than him. That information made him slightly less scared. The being that the eyes belonged to was no longer obscured by the snow, gazing back at him was a Coatl hatchling covered in frost. Was this the hatchling he heard before? Cygnus shakily tried to appear as non-threatening as possible to try and encourage the hatchling to come closer, it wasn't that difficult since he hardly appeared threatening in the first place. The hatchling came closer, and with it the snowstorm only got more intense, a strong gust of wind nearly knocking Cygnus over. The wind caused the hood of his cloak to slip and completely obscure his vision, startling the already stressed skydancer, making him drop the lantern.
It was hard to hear over the fabric of his cloak violently flapping in the wind, but there was a faint shattering sound. Well, there goes his lantern, if he was barely holding himself together emotionally before the lantern breaking was his final straw. He didn't care that the tears would freeze on his face, he was tired, everything hurt, and his mom was still missing, and ontop of all that he was lost in a snowstorm. Curling up on himself he wailed, he was just so scared with everything happening. The cold air burned as he was hyperventilating but he just couldn't calm down. He barely noticed as a small fluffy hatchling curled up around him, he didn't question the sudden warmth but welcomed it with open arms. Clutching the hatchling tightly he sobbed in the snow, not caring as it was piling up over both of them. It wasn't much but in that moment the snowstorm seemed to calm down, just for a moment before his eyelids shut. He wasn't sure what would happen to the two of them, he was scared of so many of the possible outcomes, but with how things were currently he was almost fine with it.
...
Inside the grocery store, the head engineer, Parthenia noticed some strange movement out in the snow as she was closing the place for the night. She wasn't sure if the owner would be particular happy about the decision she was about to make, but if she really wasn't then she would already be here to stop her.
Stepping out into the unusually deep snow, she approached the two unconscious hatchlings closely huddled together and brought them back into the store with her. She may not have been able to save everyone she wanted to, but she sure was going to try her hardest here wether the other employees liked it or not.
