A set of golden eyes haunts him. Even now, cast aside, thrown away like what they’d had was nothing - for my own good, what utter nonsense, like being torn asunder like that could ever be good - it’s as if he’s still there. His warm gaze, honey-sweet; his soft touch, caressing feather-light... craving it so only makes his rage burn hotter.

The last time he’d leveled his bow at him, from a distance he’d thought safe, his arm had trembled. The steady line of the arrow faltered. His terrible charms are still at work, he thought, lips pulling back in a snarl as he scrubbed at bitter tears. But that was before long hours of research through dusty, cracking scrolls, rituals by candlelight under the full moon, a deliberate and unyielding hardening of his heart.

Next time, Muroc won’t be so lucky.
