Biography
Tenebris is the silent consort of Umbra. Where she is the inevitable encroaching night, he is the passive shadow -- and he lives as such by her side.
He holds no authority within the clan, though some still go to him with questions for his mate.
He knows he does not quell the longing and hatred she holds in her heart for her first mate's absence, but he sticks by her to act as her eyes, and her his mouth.
Tenebris desires nothing more than to serve Umbra; perhaps he does this a little too well, as she has never once heard any inkling of a no from him.
If she wants him to forget the dragon she once was, he will, and he wants to.
It hurts to remember Cabrra, the drake who at first was ignorant of his verbal block, asking him questions and pressuring him to speak — she did, after a while, accept that he would not. It wasn't until later he realised that she simply wanted to hear another mirror's voice, it had been so long since she had. The only other of their kind was Azul but he never emerged from his pools, lost in his own world of water.
It was the loneliness that took her, that pushed her to trek that long distance with the keeper to the obscured crescent, to blindly assume that she was alone and unadored. She was wrong, of course, it was not only the keeper who held love for her.
Her friend, the silent general, accepted her choice but Tenebris would not. They were mated, the keeper had decided it, she was not allowed to simply abandon him.
Imagine his joy when she returned from the pool, dripping with black. It did not matter that he no longer recognised the uncertain monstrous form before him, it was Cabrra. Cabrra who entwined herself with him when they slept, Cabrra who flanked him when they wandered the tunnels, Cabrra who spoke to him without caution or pity and who treated him like he was a drake the same as her.
Except it wasn't. Cabrra was gone, this new form proclaimed, her body no longer like his, her voice no longer like hers. Umbra, she called herself, did not tell jokes or speak much to him at all; Umbra told him "We are not the same now, I am Umbra, fang and claw of shadow. My purpose is clear, I will bring glory to our Mother of Darkness. Your purpose, young shade, is to aid my mission. You will be my ears, you will tell me what these restless shades plot, you will be my eyes, you will see how they look at me, and you will be my hand against dissenters."
Umbra did not specify how he was meant to do these things without a mouth of his own, in the past Cabrra looked at him to decipher his 'words' but Umbra was blind, her eyes a swirling mass of wriggling shadows. So he enlisted the help of Hecate, a nocture who unnerved him in the way she looked at him with that cruel and taunting stare, she would be Umbra's ears and hand. He, for now, was content on playing the role of her eyes, guiding her through the tunnels, flank pressed against hers like they used to. But it was different now, and he tried not to think about.
