A Tale of Dancing Lights

I sit by the entrance to the city below the Temple, my 6 tails twitching as I focus on the magic before me. Unlike most of my kind, I keep quiet, only adorned in a delicate trail of silver along my coat. I checked with the Void Tenko, Miyako, to ensure the stars woven in matched those above. Only the stars who sang songs of peace and guidance were set in place, with hopes of bringing good fortune to the place I called home. It was the only piece I made, and the only one I ever plan to make. My skills never were tied to such delicate crafts, anyways.

I can hear Reiko's song fading in the distance, the light of the sun fading as the night was called forth. That was my cue, but... where was my mate? I sit upright, looking about in confusion. It takes me a moment to spot him, weaving a wisp of fire with Maki. The Foxfire was correcting him on his magic, reminding him of the lessons she gave both of us when we were kits lost in the woods of Gleanreal. I know we're far from that now, with fires that guide us home night after night, no matter how far we stray. Like a small thread, the lights we make always hold a tie to the Temple we call home. We may not sing, but we've woven stars of our own to guide others home. Maki claims that's the Night Shiro in us. Whatever it is, all I know is that it helps keep the magic somewhat stable as we travel about the land around us, searching for those who've lost their way. Weaving a star is easier than a simple flame. The wording is what matters, and if it works, it works.

Soon, Daichi is by my side, his tails fanning out as he darts ahead. The star-like jewels, a mirror to my own, glimmer in the light of his new guiding flame. He seems excited to set out, something I admire about him. He holds excitement for the journey, the sights we may see that have changed since our last trip beyond the walls. I, however, am wary, my eyes peeled for two things. One is the light of a Kitsune in need, be it from their gem to their own flames zipping about. The other... I shake my head, trying to rid my mind of the odd wisps that shift from our lovely blue to a deep crimson, or the violet flowers with blood-red stems. Those are dangerous. I know that all too well.

With a wave to our mentor, we head out in search of lost visitors to the Shattered Temple, tuning into the magic about us to search for any shifts that could endanger us. We pass by the more iconic places where travelers wind up first, from the small falls heading down the peak to the mossy outcrop of natural stone creating a sort of shelter for anyone afraid of the creatures that wander Remnant. We even pass a scar in the earth, a harsh reminder of an attack too close to home for any of the Kitsune of the Shattered Temple to be comfortable staying there, at least for a while. Even I can still see the remnants of that battle, after all these years. From crystal shards jutting out of the earth to ash staining the life there to this day, each little thing was hard to look at.

I'm about to move on to a lesser known area when I spot it. A flash of color. Something that certainly didn't belong in a place like this. I yip to my mate, calling him over to point them out. I honestly have never seen such bright colors on a kit before, pinks and blues, almost like a sunset. I'd have said it was a Void Tenko if they were any darker, but never have I seen one so small. Especially not with only one tail. I walk up to the fuzzball, tilting my head. It takes me a moment to see a lack of a gem, instead spotting feathers, a furred tail... and the shorter snoot of a feline. A young one, at that. Those feathers were still downy, despite some decorative plumes sticking out, and their fur was as soft as a kit ready to wander from their mother's side. I move back with a gasp, my hackles rising at the sight.

It seems, in our search for travelers, we found ourselves a rather young Sphinx!

Daichi, bless him, decides to approach the young cub, gently nudging him. He's greeted by a quiet chirp, then a small shuffle as the cub settles again. Upon closer inspection, we realize the cub is fast asleep, right in the middle of an abandoned battlefield. Soon enough, we're debating with each other about what to do. On one tail, this is a Sphinx! The crimson wisps were made by a pair of Sphinxes! This one might be influenced by them. There's even a chance he's been set out here for us to find! On the other tail, however, is the simple fact that this particular Sphinx is just a child. He's young, naive, and very likely lost. We would take in a lost kit if we found one, so why not a lost cub? If he's brought up by us, we might even be able to name him an ally of the Shattered Temple, and a powerful one at that. Besides, who better to guard our scrolls than a Sphinx? It's in their nature!

The debate is settled when I hear a faint squeaking sound. I look over, only to see the cub has finally woken from his sleep. Those pale golden eyes, so innocent and bright, are watching one of my wisps dance about fretfully near him. To my great surprise, when the cub stands to try and swipe at the wisp, I notice just how short his little legs are. Perhaps that's why this cub is here. Such short limbs... they aren't normal for a Sphinx. I watch as he tries to catch the wisp, leaping and tumbling about before he finally slides into one of the crystals, his tail sticking up like a little pillar. Finally, I speak up.

"... We'll make sure he's watched over, just in case."

As I begin to use one of my wisps to entice the young cub back down the trail with me, I begin to talk to him, using soft tones to keep him calm.

"Hello, little one. I'm Chieko, a Night Shiro of the Shattered Temple. I won't hurt you. I'll guide you to someplace safe, where things like the Ashen won't bring you harm. Just follow the bouncing blue wisp, alright? No matter where you go, it'll guide you home. I promise."

Night Shiro

These kind kitsune are more interested in their duties than causing problems for others. They tend to be dutiful and good-natured and is one of the few variants that prefers being in large groups. While they do like shoulder responsibility and do it well, they poke fun at just about anything. These Shiro kitsune thrive in the nighttime, amongst the stars and moonlight. Similar to normal Shiro, Night Shiro enjoy large groups. They, however, are excellent artisans and craftsmen, making some of the most delicate of jewelry and silk. Night Shiro also enjoy singing... if you can earn their respect.
