Biography

Sajhev first noticed a broken tooth.

She examined her mouth, pulling back her lips to see that, indeed, her tooth was cracked. A thin, brown fissure, barely reaching to the bottom- just a result of normal wear and tear, she supposed. It didn't hurt, so she didn't see a reason to worry. She shrugged it off, and went about her day.

The next day, she slipped her tongue over what she thought would be a smooth surface, and found that her tooth was sharp. She investigated it again, discovering that the crack had grown- but instead of outward, it grew thicker. She touched it with a finger, rubbing the hard brown material that was there. It still didn't hurt- in fact, she couldn't feel anything at all- and she did not think that it was a sign of decay. It was hard, like rock.

Cold, like rock.

-

The following week, once the material had spread all over the original tooth, she pulled it out, but found the next day that it was starting to grow back. She looked to her other teeth, each beginning to sport hairline fractures near the top, only widening as the day went on. As the original tooth grew back in, she noticed a glimmer- a bright blue, breaking through. Like a geode. A gem.

Sajhev had little money to spare towards anything outside of basic survival, but she gathered up what she had and went to see the nearest healer.

They told her it was gembond.

She was scared. Living in Dragonhome her whole life, naturally she had heard countless stories of dragons, afflicted by this disease, waiting as their bones and muscles turned to cold, unfeeling rock. Never did she think this was her fate.

They told her there were ways to slow it down, so she could maybe live a full life, but it would be expensive.

She walked home and watched as her teeth turned to gemstones. No, she was young. She would not die this way. Her eyes turned to the sword she kept, only for self-defense, and reconsidered its purpose.

-

The dragon walked alone, through a small ravine created by an old, long-dried river. Sajhev watched them, hiding above the cliffs. The hand that held the sword twitched, and she unsheathed it, taking a shaky breath. Jumping down, she landed in front of them, quickly raising her sword and pointing it at the dragon's face. She refused to look at their expression, sparing herself from the emotional toll.

"I won't hurt you. Just give me your money, okay?"

The dragon stammered, hands fumbling on a coin purse, and tried to reason with her. She ignored their words, closing her eyes in a wince. With trembling hands, she jabbed the sword forward, bringing it closer to the dragon's face. "Your money, now."

By the time she had robbed enough to get her the first treatment, she rubbed her eyes and stones scraped her hands. She refused to let this horrible disease take her vision. No matter what it took, she would slow the progression down to a crawl- and she would survive.

-

You walk home after spending a long day gathering. Today wasn't your biggest success, but you were able to put a few more coins in your pocket, enough to hold you over for the next day of work. A shadow blots out the sun and you look up, spotting a spiral, which lands in front of you. Before you can say anything, they immediately draw a sword and thrust it forward, holding it just a hair's width from your neck.

Eyes clouded by earth.

A mouth full of gemstones grin at you.

"This is a robbery. Give me everything you have."
