Biography
a l c h e m y b o r n –
curious | attentive | quiet
Before. Before there was magic, and beauty, and bliss, and he knew not what he was, but he knew what might be. He drifted through the world aimlessly, without worry or care, following his each and every fancy, knowing no other way to live. His wayward desires led him to strike crystals and set them aglow, to sway clouds this way and that, to conjure rainbows or rain. If he manifested at all in the physical plane, it was as a glittering wisp, a bundle of arcane energy that wandered through the sky. And he was content, if drifting elemental essence could know anything of what it was to be content. Then there were two other beings before him, and they spoke words that struck a chord with the land, and he felt an irresistible pull, as if he was being summoned forth. He knew nothing of the ritual that they performed, knew nothing of their intention to force the energy that pulsed throughout the wild arcane lands to coalesce into an artificial kind of life. He knew only that the individuals before him seemed delightful, the kind of creatures he might spend a life alongside, and so it was easy, for him to swirl and swoop and glide into the hollow form that they set forth. It seemed to be a good enough idea at the time. His myriad whimsies had led him astray before, but never in a disastrous fashion, and so he brushed any prickling concerns off. To be an essence of magic was, after all, to know nothing of consequences. As a result he did not understand their wonder, the way they marveled as he took shape. He did not understand the implications as he grew before their very eyes, as he thrived and appeared as a real dragon should. Aerwyna and Aeloith were the names he learned first. He did not learn the names of all their failed attempts before. By all accounts, he has assimilated into life as a dragon beautifully, learning in leaps and bounds. Aerwyna is especially pleased with him. With his progress. Of the two dragons responsible for bringing him forth into this world, in this way, she spends far more time with him, provides him with material to digest and absorb. Texts of every kind, art and images, manuals on all sorts of behaviors. His learning is almost as wondrous to her as it is to him, he might think, as he catches the glimmer in her eye. Alongside all these lessons on what it is to be a dragon Aerwyna also instructs him on what it might mean to be capable of love, and although he might be a certain kind of oblivious he knows from her furtive glances and secretive looks that this is something forbidden, something that she ought not to teach. But it is clear to him that she does not care to hear the rest of the world’s opinion, and he himself has never been particularly beholden to these things, and so they carry on in their intimacy, down this spiraling, spiraling path. And he wonders if this is what it means. If this is what it means, to be content. |
