Acubens. The voice whispers, faint, in the back of her head. She looks up, tiny violet eyes peering from beneath her mother's wing. The voice does not speak again, and she lets out a low cry from the back of her throat. It was calling to her for a reason. It was something important. Something crucial, critical, essential. The moonlight streaming in the entrance to her mother's cave pools at her feet as she stands in it, wide eyes taking in all the sky above her has to offer. She does not understand what she sees--she barely knows what she is--but already, she knows it is far larger and deeper and older than anything she understands. Her mother raises her head, and watches as Acubens steps further into the light, silver rippling across her head and her tail, collecting in the hollows of her shoulders as she stretches her furled wings. The sky overhead alights with greens and purples, alights with silvers and blues, and the colors reflect in the sheen of her wings as she watches the stars and nothing else. The voice does not speak again--will never speak again--but she is still marked from that moment. It haunts her, what the voice wanted, what the voice meant for her to see when it called her name. She devoted herself to seeing, devoted herself to the study of the soul she held in her claws and the face and fangs she saw mirrored in its surface. What about her was so incredible that it prompted the awakening of something Other? What about her made the sky paint itself across her wings? There were moments where she caught sight of something--someone--behind her closed eyelids. In her sleep, or during the day--the visions came unprompted and irregularly, each one as short and vivid as the others. Who are these dragons? she wonders, hastily sketching and coloring and recording each one in her notebook, charcoal staining her gloves. Why do I see them? What do they mean? So many unanswered questions--and yet, one day, when the first dragon she ever saw appears before her, hide as black as soot, wings as dark as the night sky, gold in her claws and between her teeth, Acubens finally understands. They are my people, she realizes, facing down the blue-black menace before her. They are Home. |
