Will is an extremely self-disciplined spiral raised as a royal guard. She is the illegitimate daughter of a princess that ended up married in another land for a profitable union of marriage with another kingdom. Will, being both of vampire blood and out of wedlock, did not go with the princess but was instead raised by the royal guard as a warrior. She has been taught the art of battle and has learned to use her supernatural strength and senses to great effect.

Will's life turned upside down when she was ordered to find the dragon that had stolen a magic heirloom from the castle. Will agreed, and teamed up with Harper, a magic consultant, to figure out who could have broken into the castle. Unbeknownst to her, Harper was the thief and was worming his way farther and farther into the hearts of those within the castle.

Harper begins on stealing more items right under everyone's' nose while using his powers to become more and more beloved. Meanwhile, Will starts looks into the secrets of the castle to find who could be stealing things so well protected. She learns many things that shake her faith, realizing that below the glamor of royalty is politics, corruption, and exploitation. She learns that she is not the abandoned child of a monster like she was told but instead royalty and that her mother was rendered sterile to create discord in a rival kingdom. She finds out that her blood supplements were poisoned with herbs that increase suggestibility and make one weaker. Learns that the terrible plague ravaging the costal people of her kingdom was artificially created to clear the way for a more "influential" clientele. Her faith in her kingdom is ready to crumble when she learns Harper is the thief and has been using his powers to indulge his every whim. While still deciding what side to choose the head of the royal guard figures out and confronts her and the thief.

Instead of turning Harper in she sides with the nocturne and attacks the guard. Between her emotions and Harper's disinhibition miasma, she loses control and drains her "father," the abusive royal guard who taught her how to be strong, how to see herself as nothing more than a monstrous tool. Harper helps her gain control and they flee the castle, never to return. Then, she learns how to live for herself.

Will now ventures with Harper. She is fierce and vengeful to those she believes deserve it. She is cold and powerful, exuding a lethal energy of sadism and control. Yet, for all her chilly exterior, she belives that those in power should not use it to abuse the weak but make a stronger future. Will still has much guilt when self-indulging, and often has problems even seeing the worth in such extraneous actions. Her partner Harper has been getting her to indulge herself more often, starting with satisfying her bloodlust. His empathy magic allows her victims to want nothing more than to sate her thirst and he causes them to feel the same joy she does when feeding. Although she has the desire to fully consume the lifeforce of the person she feeds on, Will refuses to do such.

Will has been trying to learn how to use emapthomancy herself. She has some natural ability due to her bloodline but is a terrible mage and Harper and even worse teacher. She is very determined but progress is not very good. Emotionally constipated dragon is, surprise, not good at emotions
