Biography
Grimnebulin
The Spellshield -- The Guardian Mage
Plagueheart clan patriarch
The Spellshield -- The Guardian Mage
Plagueheart clan patriarch
The Scarred Wastelands are no place for the weak and infirm, and a guardian born as the runt of his clutch is unlikely to survive. The harsh terrain, the paucity of food, and the mutated beasts that roam the ruined plains are all quick to winnow the unworthy; and no matter what warm sentiment might lurk in a mother dragon's breast, to permit a stunted hatchling to survive would rob her healthy ones of much-needed food and care.
Born undersized, his scales soft and twisted by a fungus that had infested his egg, Grimnebulin was such a runt. The ruthless practicality that rules the clans of the wastelands dictated that he be turned out of his nest not long after hatching, and he was. Such an exile was almost certainly a death sentence—but Grimnebulin survived. Sheer tenacity and a sharp wit served him where a frail body would not, and the rigors of survival in the Wandering Contagion forced his magic to the fore. What took most guardians age and great practice to achieve came to Grimnebulin with terrifying swiftness, and he taught himself to use the Plaguebringer's gifts to the best of his ability.
And so he lived and grew—but never thrived—against all odds, using his magic to ward himself against attackers and scavenge his daily meals. When the soul-deep, all-consuming need of the Search came upon him, he turned his magic to scrying out his charge—and found, to his surprise, it was a dragon he already knew of. The Crimson Scourge—that mute, packless mirror who destroyed everything in her path, who clans took care to ward off with a constant cacophony should she approach—she was infamous in his part of the Contagion.
So the trial of his Search began, not to discover his charge's identity, but to hunt her down across the vast, trackless wastelands. It took him years—years of scrying, years of questioning dragons who had seen or heard of the Scourge, years of frustrating near-misses when she learned of his quest and made a habit of fleeing him whenever he appeared. In all those years, he did not give much thought to anything but catching her; what he might say or do to convince her to even listen to him, let alone convince her to let him follow her for all their lives, did not ever occur to him.
Thus it came as something to a surprise to both of them that when he at last came upon her while she was excavating a temporary den for the night, he promptly sat on her to keep her from escaping him.
Even an undersized guardian proved more than a match for a full-grown mirror.
