Biography

“Would you both shut up!” A voice hisses.

“Why?” Another whines. “They don’t know we’re here yet.”

A thwack. “Well now they certainly do.”

“Oww!!” A third voice emerges.

“Why did you say ow! I’m the one who got hit!” The second grumbles.

The cacophony of voices suddenly shuts off as you round the corner of the labyrinth. Initially relieved to hear another’s voice, you are filled with dismay as you realise that the voices you can hear are three squabbling Aberration heads. You frown. Odd. You thought there were meant to be two.

Regardless, their maws look hungry, slick with sweat from the humidity of the labyrinth, and the red doesn’t help to reduce the gory look of their heads.

You steel yourself, suddenly afraid to ask them to move from where they sit blocking the path onwards.

But you must pass.

“Excuse me sirs. Might I pass?”

“Oh thank the gods.” The third head drawls. “Let’s move.” The body rises but then suddenly slams down.

“No, idiot! Don’t you remember?” The first head prompts.

The second head pipes up. “Uhh, do we get food first?”

“I’m surrounded by fools. No.” He sighs. “We were put here to prevent travellers. And if they can’t answer our riddle,” he eyes you up and down as if you’re a piece of meat, which, you just may be to them, “then we eat.”

Involuntarily, you shiver. “Riddle?”

“Riddles.” The head amends. “I’ll go first. What kind of coat is always wet when you put it on?”

You blink, a little shocked at meeting an aberration of an Aberration in this labyrinth, but you do concede that you shouldn’t have expected much else. There had been an air of danger when you had entered, though you hadn’t had to fight even one Beast. That had shocked you, and unnerved you, and the labyrinth had been eerily silent. Now at least, there was company. Although that company seemed as likely to eat you as to let you pass.

But riddles were nothing for you. Since you were young you had practised them, in the hopes of meeting a Sphinx in the future. In its stead however, you had discovered a three headed Aberration and you were a little less pleased with the discovery.

“A coat of paint.”

The second head laughed and clapped its hands. “Oh, good show! Ok, ok, my turn!”

The first head grumbles. “Gods, this ought to be good.”

“You shut it! What gets wetter the more you dry it?”

“You dolt!” The first head brings its fist down on the second head. “It’s what gets wetter the more it dries and that one’s easy! A towel-”

You stifle a chuckle, but a smile slips out. “That’s still the second riddle done.”

“Argh! You, you!” He points wildly at the third head, which has been inspecting its nails in a rather dry manner.

Without moving, its eyes flick upwards. “Can’t we just let them pass.”

“No, idiot! We must give the riddles, the riddles!” The first head looks a little wild now, frothing slightly at the misbehaviour of the other heads.

“Fine. I never was but always will be. No one ever saw me but everyone knows I exist. I give people the motivation to better themselves every day. What am I?”

The smile slips off your face, and you think hard. “Tomorrow.”

The third head blinks in surprise, as the first head acquiesces, “Good job.” The body rises and moves aside.

“Go ahead then.”

You slip past them and continue on your journey, realising that all in all, you would end up missing the squabbling heads.
