They'd been tracking him for days. Weeks, perhaps. The Wildclaw that had killed Faustina's charge in cold blood was one of the most difficult quarries Caius and Galerius had ever agreed to hunt, and the Fae mage was now kicking himself for offering to do it for free. It was like his brain had turned into a useless pile of gray sludge the moment he'd laid eyes on the magnificent Guardian - something that typically only happened to him when Caius was involved.

He shook his head to clear the distracting thoughts, and squinted through the heavily-falling snow that obscured the Snowsquall Tundra before him. What mattered now was finding their quarry - before he found them, again. The Wildclaw was toying with them - the two mercenaries still knew next to nothing about him, besides his name - Tiberius - but it hadn't taken long to establish that he was cunning, sadistic, and powerful.

They'd clashed with him several times as they chased him across Sornieth, from their starting point in the Sunbeam Ruins, through the Shifting Expanse and the Ashfall Waste, into the Windswept Plateau, and finally across the sea in an airship, to the small kingdom of Ivadour in the Southern Icefield. Every time, just as they'd come close to finally cornering him, Tiberius would ambush them on his own terms, thrash them soundly, and then give them the slip while they licked their wounds. It was, quite frankly, embarassing for mercenaries of their caliber.

Galerius nearly fell off his partner's head as the Skydancer stopped abruptly, tense and alert.
"He's here," Caius said. "I can feel it."

The Fae immediately took to the air and clutched his staff, charging it with energy in preparation for battle. For several long, tense minutes, there was nothing. Then, the Wildclaw burst forth from the impenetrable snowsquall and slammed into Caius with a vicious roar. Galerius retaliated with a searing bolt of blinding light that sent Tiberius flying, but he didn't stay down. Leaping to his feet, he lunged at the mage, and the Fae wasn't able to evade his jaws. Tiberius clamped down on his wing and tossed the mercenary aside like a mere toy.

Galerius slammed into a snowbank, bounced once, and skidded roughly across the frozen ground, coming to a stop with his nose inches away from a frail blue flower. He blinked. He'd seen this plant before - where? Lightning flashed through the snow behind him; he picked himself up and turned to look over his shoulder. Caius was resorting to using his breath against the Wildclaw, who had him pinned to the ground.

The flower! He'd seen it illustrated in one of the scrolls he'd retrieved for a client in the Sunbeam Ruins! The Frozen Bluebell, supposedly capable of instantly freezing a dragon to the core - there was only one way to find out. Cloaking his claws in a sheath of solid light to shield him from the plant's power, he ripped it from the icy ground, and threw himself at Tiberius with a shout.

The Wildclaw turned to look, but didn't have time to move before the mercenary slammed the flower directly into his face. Galerius skipped off his head like a stone under the power of his own momentum as the Bluebell's magic took hold, sending a shockwave of frost rippling across Tiberius's body. Just as the scroll had claimed, the plant froze him solid, right as Caius unleashed another bolt of lightning.

Tiberius tumbled stiffly across the snow, and when he came to a stop, he looked for all the world like nothing more than a particularly cloudy and dark ice sculpture that had been ruined by an unfortunate blow to the chest.

The mercenaries stood silently for a moment, breathing hard from the exertion of battle. Then, sensing no life in the fallen Wildclaw, Caius turned to his partner and nodded. The job was done - or so they believed.
