The little Coatl stared in wonder as the Skydancer in front of him produced another colourful burst of flames. The other dragons around him erupted in applause, cheering on the now bowing dragon on the small stage.
A claw grabbed the Coatls shoulder, he spun around to look into the stern face of his father.
“Stop wasting your time with this nonsense! We’re done here, let’s get back.” Sighing the small turned to follow his father back to their den, risking one last view to the Skydancer mage.
He knew better than to question his fathers orders, especially when it comes to the use of magic.
“Why waste your talents on useless charades”, his parents and teachers would say, “When you have enough power to protect your land?”
It’s true, his magic is strong. Much stronger than that of his peers. But he doesn’t want to spend his life fighting the beasts that venture too close to their territory, seeing their terror as he hurls magic their way. He wants to see the awe and wonder he saw in the other hatchlings eyes as they followed the colourful fireballs of the Skydancer mage through the sky.
His family won’t have it though. In their eyes, his future was already set in stone.

“That’s the last of them!”
Hearing those words never fails to flood him with relief. He surveys the area one last time, but all he could see were the unmoving bodies of the fallen Beastmen scattered about. No movement, no sounds, not even the distant chirping of birds. As was always the case when their troupe of mages was sent out to fight off enemies.
He let out a silent sigh looking down at himself. His colourful feathers were covered up by dark, mud-splattered rags. Blending in with the murky surroundings of the Tangled Woods was one of the first things he learned when he started training.
“Good Job as always Archmage” his comrades passed by him nodding approvingly.
Archmage. The name he was given when his parents first entered him into training. He can’t even remember his given name any longer. He is simply Archmage. And his only purpose is to protect the territory.

“Did you hear? Apparently there’s a circus near the borders of the territory.” Archmages feathers perked up at those words. Vague memories of colourful flames and laughter echoed in his mind.
“Is there?” Sound disinterested. Don’t show any weakness.
“Mhm, right near the clearing with the glowshrooms, apparently. They submitted a formal request for protection it seems. Really, like we don’t have enough work on our claws already, who would voluntarily work extra hours at a place like this? It’s not even on our grounds!” The other dragon huffed like she never heard anything more ridiculous.
“I don’t know. I could use the extra coin.” Archmage didn’t wait for an answer. He turned to leave and vanished between the dark brambles.

Bright lights and the constant sound of laughter wasn’t something Archmage was used to. But here he was, in his dark tattered robes, standing among a herd of giggling hatchlings.
He was in awe of this place. Colourful lights dancing through the leaves of the dark trees, upbeat music playing from the big tent in the middle of the clearing and the sweetest smell of cotton candy heavy in the air. Being here made him feel giddy and lighter than he has in years.
“Stop wasting your time with this nonsense”, rang his fathers words in his ears. But how could this be nonsense? How could a feeling this warm not be worth pursuing?
He carefully eyed the other dragon that came to guard the Circus. A small black and white Fae, covered in scars and burn marks. He never talked to this dragon before, only heard rumours from the other soldiers. A loner. Unable to speak. Joined after his family got killed by Beastmen. A ferocious fighter.
Archmage didn’t expect someone like that to accept a job like this one, he expected the little dragon to be bored or maybe even appalled. Instead, what he saw on the little dragons face was a longing, a sparkle in his eyes not unlike the feeling that formed in his own chest whenever he looked at the sight before him.
“It’s nice isn’t it?”, he whispered carefully so that only the other soldier could hear. The small Fae didn’t turn to him, he didn’t answer. He just nodded ever so slightly.

He’s not sure what has gotten into him. Ever since that night of guarding the Circus with the small Fae, Nute, his job has become even more unbearable. The pride in his parents eyes even more painful.
And now it has come to this. He was standing on the edge of their territory in the middle of the night with nothing more on him than a small bag holding his most important possessions.
Oh his shoulder sat Nute, his crests quivering. Whether from anxiety or excitement, Archmage could not tell.
“This is it”, Archmage whispered. “Are you sure you want to come along?”
The small dragon on his shoulder silently nodded, but didn’t take his eyes off of the deep darkness in front of them. Archmage took a deep breath and then took the first step into a new beginning.

They wandered the Tangled Woods for what felt like weeks, avoiding Beastmen and other clans alike. ‘What a great plan this was’, Archmage thought more than once, ‘Setting out to join a Circus without even knowing where to find one.’
Somedays he can’t help but think they made a mistake. That they should turn back and beg for forgiveness to be let back into the guard. Nutes gaze on him feels especially heavy on those days, like he wants to urge him to keep going.
Today was no different than the other days they have been travelling. At least that’s what he thought, when suddenly Nutes crests shot up and he hopped off from where he was resting on Archmages shoulder. He disappeared between the brambles and Archmage had trouble keeping up with him while they raced throw the undergrowth.
When they finally stopped Archmage had to catch his breath. Also there were brambles stuck between his feathers and plucking those out would take forever. He was just about to ask Nute what in Shadowbringers name has gotten into him when he stopped short. In front of them was a clearing. A clearing with a huge fairground on it. The air smelled faintly sweet, and if he strained his ears he could hear music in the distance. They found it.

“Who do I have to talk to get work here??”, Archmage exclaimed right after slamming open the door crudely labelled ‘office’ on the dark wood.
A Spiral and a Wildclaw startled and looked at him like he had grown a second head.
“No offence mate, but we’re not hiring”, said the Spiral. “I mean have you seen the place?? We can barely afford to pay the bills as is, and more and more of our, oh so dear, colleagues leave to try their luck somewhere else.”
He shook his head defeated and gave a tired look to the open, empty vault. “There’s nothing left here.”
“How did that even happen?”
“Eh, you know our old leader kind of took all the money and pulled a vanishing act. Can’t really do anything about it.”
“So, you’re just going to give up??”
“Yep” with that the Spiral flopped down onto an old looking sofa and closed his eyes. The Wildclaw shook her head and sighed.
“Really Vikenti, do you have to be so rude to our guests? Listen Honey, don’t take him serious. The reason we’re still here is because we love the fair. It brought some much needed light into these dark woods. But Vikenti is right about one thing. There’s nothing left. The Boss took with everything we had and we can barely cover the costs to keep things running with what we still have. I’m sorry.”
Archmage sighed and turned to leave. He thanked the two dragons for their time and started wandering over the fair. Or what’s left of it anyway. A lot of the stands appeared to be closed, the wide pathways were eerily empty. If Archmage closed his eyes he could still hear the bustling sounds of people streaming down the alley to reach the next attraction.
Reality was different though. He was about to get Nute and leave when he heard faint laughter.
Curious he followed the empty alleys to a small plaza. He spotted Nute on a nearby building who was curiously watching the scene in front of him.
A young Spiral in the middle of the plaza, in front of him two hatchlings laughing at the ever changing shapes he formed with colourful balloons. One of the hatchlings squealed delighted when the Spiral tied himself into knots to form the vague shape of the balloon animal he just made.
He handed the squealing kids the balloons and they hopped off down to the end of the plaza, where their parents were already waiting for them.
The balloon dragon spotted them and winked before turning his attention back to another hatchling timidly approaching.
“You know what Nute?” The little Fae turned to face him. “I think we have work to do!”
With that he turned back around and marched back to the office.

Looking back, Archmage can’t say that he regrets any of his choices in the past few years. In fact, if he could go back and tell his past self that he should just ignore everything his parents taught him he probably would.
When he closed his eyes he can hear them, the rustling and murmuring of dragons on the fair, waiting for the big magic show he and his fellow circus mages are about to perform.
He ruffled his feathers and smoothed them down again, making sure his colours shine extra bright.
“Yo Boss, you’re up!” Vikenti yelled from the doorway, snaking his long body right onto the old sofa in the room.
Archmage turned to face the door gazing up to see a small familiar dragon bustling around between the light fixtures, awaiting his signal for the spotlights.
Archmage nodded his way and strut forward.
“Showtime!”
