Biography

The Rose Garden

🙛⁕🙙

Everyone said that the noble status was one to embrace and treasure, for it never came easily. I never understood the appeal of being of noble status, it’s rather boring, really. It feels like you are in an endless loop, repeating the same blasted things day by day, minute by minute. I would be lying if I said I thought it would never change. But, it did. Not in the way you would think though.

I remember the night I met her clearly. I was at a party, faking my entertainment and joy to everyone around me. Having been through so many parties before I found them a rather dull and time-wasting activity. I could be doing much more entertaining things, things worth my time. But then I saw her across the room and it felt like my heart had stopped. She was breathtaking. I had never seen such a beautiful girl before. When she looked my way my stomach felt like it had butterflies in it. Frozen in my spot, I watched her come toward me. Thousands of screaming thoughts ran through my head as she came closer and closer until she was right in front of me. She gave me a kind, warm smile, and it felt like I was on fire with such passion, such warmth… Such love.
- Hello. - she greeted, her voice smooth as silk and delicate as a feather.
- Good evening, madam. - I finally said after a few painfully silent seconds, bowing down to her. - And to what pleasure do I owe of making your acquaintance tonight? I am Itsuki, and it was a pleasure to meet you. - I introduced myself and I swear to God that I saw a blush spread across her face.
- It’s a pleasure to meet you too. I am Akai. - the girl introduced herself, bowing back.
We talked for hours that night about anything we could until the party came to a close. We said our goodbyes, and I knew this wouldn’t be the last I’d see of Akai.
Months had gone by, and I’d been writing to and receiving letters from Akai. There were some times where we’d meet in the rose garden only we knew about, and it was amazing. We wanted to call it love, but we couldn't. The social gap was too big. I was a wealthy noble while Akai’s family was impoverished. But it still didn’t stop us from meeting and writing our letters. But things didn’t stay like this for forever.

The land was a mess. We had fallen into war. I remember hearing that the impoverished dragons were a target and that the enemies were close to Akai’s estate. I remember rushing out to find her, sprinting across paths and soaring above the structures in hopes to reach her in time. But I didn’t. I was too slow. I landed in front of her home and saw that it was invaded, that it was in complete ruins. I let out a scared gasp of a breath, wasting no time to rush into the rubble to search for Akai. I don’t know how many times I called out her name, hearing the crunch of walls and ceilings below me and listening to things sizzle and crack as fire licked the materials. Tears welled in my eyes, and then I saw a dragon. A familiar dragon. I screamed Akai’s name and barreled towards her, skidding to a stop next to her form. Tears flowed from my eyes at the state she was in. She was disfigured, and she was blind, but she was just barely alive. A sob tore from my throat and I collapsed next to her. Akai turned toward me and let out a raspy breath. I shushed her, told her to save her strength and that I’d help her to heal. But when I got her back to my home and had her examined by the healer, the healer just shook their head with sadness and despair. The action stung, but I gave a sharp nod and took Akai to the one place I knew she’d want to be in. The rose garden.

As I reached our favorite spot in the rose garden, I set Akai down as gently as I could. I could tell Akai was deathly sick, and it hurt badly. I took her into my arms, getting a sick feeling in my stomach as I knew what was going to come. I held her close to me, curling my wings around her to shield her from the outside and whispering sweet words to her. I listened to her breathing, hearing it get slower and slower and slower until it came to a stop and her body went limp in my arms. My throat burned and my eyes stung with tears as I held back screams, sobs, and cries. I felt everything in me breaking apart, slowly, painfully. I set Akai down gently, laying next to her and letting the tears flow. My vision started to fade, and I started to feel calm and relaxed. Before my vision could fully fade, I took one last look at Akai and smiled weakly. Then everything was black.

I could feel something. It was warm. It was soft. I could hear something calling my name gently, but my vision was still black. I willed myself to somehow see, the colors of the sky and the rose garden coming back into view. I heard that something call my name again, and I looked around until my eyes found the girl that stole my heart. Akai. My body attempted to shoot straight up, but I was in Akai’s arms loosely. Looking around once more and letting out heavy breaths, Akai hugged me to calm me. My breathing returned to normal and I looked at her.
- Where… Where are we? - I asked softly.
- In the garden, Itsuki. - she replied even softer.
- I… I saw you die…! I felt you die! - I said quickly, turning around as best as I could to look at her better.
- We both did. But now, everything is good. - Akai said, smiling warmly. I let the information sink in before cuddling into Akai, accepting that this was my new life, and our new beginning.
