Essan learned from an early age that the fires of the Ashfall Wastes are not just for scorching foes and smelting metals. They could be used to delicately roast fruits and vegetables, smoke meats and boil seafood. He discovered that different kinds of woods, when burned gently, could impart different flavours into the food it was cooked over that rivaled any rare spice from other regions. When he was old enough, he left his home, the Clan of Rekindling, to search Sornieth for new ingredients and new ways of preparing delicious meals. He roamed until he became homesick, and returned to the ash and magma of the Flamecaller's domain where he joined the Forge Wardens. Before Essan's arrival, the Forge Wardens ate simple (and usually burnt) meals when each individual needed to, as the clan's hectic schedule denied them any sort of formal feasts. Once they had become more established and settled into their way of life, Essan arrived and claimed he was an aspiring culinarian. He was welcomed with open arms to clan, who did not have a baker, much less one of such skill, before his arrival. He quickly took to his role and made friends with Bynau, who showed him how to avoid all the mistakes he had made when combining tastes and ingredients. The clan's oldest imperial, Iande, eventually caught his eye, and whether or not his recipes or demeanor was what enticed her love is left open to debate. His friendly personality made him welcome among his new family very quickly, and his size and skill in battle earned him a valued place in the ranks. He makes sure every member of the clan has a delicious hot meal by the end of the day, and relishes the times when the clan gathers together for a banquet. |
