A wind clan dragon was supposed to be more concerned with exultation than exploration, and yet here he was, sneaking off again to examine the lichen on the bark of just one more tree. No matter how many times his parents dragged him back, Varis was absolutely determined to explore the fascinating world of fungi. This obsession was so disconcerting, they took him to the clan leaders, who suggested with no ill will that he should be prepared, given provisions, and sent away. It was a hard idea to swallow, but he soon found himself on the boundary of his known world, waving back at the family he'd spent all of his life with.
His journey took him through the territory of clans both friendly and unfriendly; he learned to fight, hide, and negotiate. (He developed a particular fondness for Snappers, who always seemed the easiest to reason with.) Soon, he felt he'd catalogued every mushroom he could find in the Wind flight's territory — or at the very least, he was getting bored with the landscape. After all, Varis was still young, and he had lots of ground to cover. He could always circle back. Not like he was going to get a mate or anything. Who else is interested in mushrooms?
He struck off into the Earthshaker's realm with a respectful nod to the Pillar, exploring every crevasse and cave he could find with relatively little luck. It was not until he began circling in towards Shadow territory that he heard about the undersea caves between the two realms. He collected the necessary gear — lanterns, waterproof journal, a sturdy pair of goggles, and an oil pencil — and dove into the water the rumors had stated led to the most easily accessible cavern.

Varis, at least, knew he'd been down there for a week before he encountered her for the first time. Even his hooded lantern, the lowest light source he'd brought, made her weep and tremble in pain, and she found the sound of his voice unbearable. But this phenomenon, a dragon growing mushrooms from her hide, was just too good for him to pass up; so he took a breath and plunged himself into the silent darkness with her.
Communication was difficult, but eventually, he taught her speech; her first attempt at speech produced a whistling that sounded a little like "see-oh", so he started calling her Siyoh. Once he did, a whole world of possibilities opened before the little dragon. She had a name, she was a being, and life was no longer solely about her next meal or what the Mycena would tell her. The more she understood, the more desperately Siyoh wanted to try to leave the caves. Varis, at this point, was happy to abandon his research to help this lost soul; it took weeks, as they sustained each other solely on her Glow Mushrooms, but they finally found a trail of Deepmine pots that led to a pensive, soft-spoken clan of Snappers who helped them to the surface.
They worked towards the light for days, trying their best to ensure that Siyoh's eyes, weak from spending nearly her entire life underground, were left time to adjust. Suddenly, Varis was struck with a flash of inspiration; he dug around in his pack and pulled out a pair of thick, dark, glass goggles, the same ones he had used to enter the underwater cave systems, and snapped them over her head. After she got over the initial shock, she realized that she could tolerate the light with much greater success. The pair wandered for months just to experience the world, heading in no direction in particular; they just wanted to enjoy being alive. It wasn't long before they realized that just cutting off Siyoh's Mycena intake didn't actually stop the visions; she seemed to have a natural gift for prophecy. Varis stopped questioning it after the third time it saved his life.
Their path led them southeast until they happened across the Shifting Expanse. Siyoh wasn't a fan of the whole "open sun, giant desert" thing, but Varis assured her that there were tons of mushrooms in deserts. Siyoh acquiesced that yes, she did like mushrooms, and mushrooms liked her, so if the desert liked mushrooms she would likely like the desert. Varis... rolled with it. They were picked up quite luckily by Vitra and Bawx on patrol not long after they ran out of water, and at Siyoh's insistence, have stayed with the clan ever since.
