ICARUS
Workshop Worker | Second to the Captain of the Guard

It had been a while since Van had left. The gloomwillow guide the skydancer--he had to remember the fighter had breedchanged before he'd left--had left for Icarus had stayed as a constant companion...though it was bittersweet. Icarus had never been one who made friends easily. It had been a long time since he'd met anyone he connected with the same way he had Vanessaril. It wasn't the same kind of connection that Jacquerel and Clarigale had (thought the skydancer fashionista loved to tease) but it was still a strong friendship and one that Icarus missed. His sister insisted that he'd make new friends, if only he let himself interact with other dragons. Icarus argued that he interacted with plenty of dragons, and none of them stood out against the rest of the clan. What he'd never really told anyone was why he thought he'd felt so attached to Van. It was so uncommon that he found another dragon who felt as uncomfortable in his own body as Van. Van had come to the clan as a guardian, and Icarus had known from the start that the dragon was ill-suited to his breed. And while Icarus had no trouble being an Imperial, the colors he saw in his reflection against the waters around the clan...they weren't him. The oracles all told him that there were ways to change the tint of his skin, his wings...but none of them could promise that he'd look the way he felt. The best they'd done was cast the skin he wore over him, which wasn't perfect but it was better than nothing. Perhaps someday he'd go to Rune and Cassandra and Kelina and let them work their magic, but for now he had to make do with what he had. Perhaps he could find a way to change himself without their help. It was some time before the next true batch of fighters joined the clan. For the most part they worked to help each other grown, and train the fledglings they already had around. But a few had trickled in from a friendly clan nearby, and one... well, one was different. The fae had a fire about him--no pun intended, coming from Icarus--that the Imperial hadn't seen in quite a while. And when he saw him at work in the Pools...that was something else entirely. The fae could cause just as much damage to the beasts there as Icarus did in the Workshop. That was a surprise, but a welcome one. "What's your name?" the Imperial asked, one night as the fae sat near the shore. The fae paused, trying to make sure he was communicating as clearly as he could. "Drudwen." "Icarus." He settled, trying to make himself smaller for the benefit of the tiny dragon. "I saw you fight in the Pools earlier. You're...impressive." Drudwen tilted his head at Icarus. "Are you being serious?" "Of course I am. I've never seen another fae fight the way you do." "Mm." The fae looked back out over the water. "Most dragons mock me." "I'm not here to mock." He paused. "I know what it's like to be something different inside than out." Drudwen looked over again. "...Yeah. I bet you do." Maybe Mystral was right about all that talking to people stuff. |
The dead cannot cry out for justice. It is a duty of the living to do so for them.
