Everything is broken except my mind.
A deep rumble sounded from the earth. First only pebbles scattered the floor, but seconds later sounds like gunshots rang out across the Breach as boulders tumbled down the sides of the great chasm. Dragons huddled in their caves, half afraid of being trapped inside their homes with no chance of escape. As soon as the quake began, it subsided….
“Everyone, calm down! Is anyone hurt?” A royal Imperial walked along the stone halls, icy eyes glittering in concern as he checked on every dragon in the clan. A goldenrod Spiral was slowly hanging up crumpled flowers, carefully shaking off the dust.
“Everything’s fine, Kyan,” a Wildclaw called down the hall, “just a little shaken up is all.” The raptor-like dragon walked up to the Imperial, plague eyes glinting. Kyan nodded and made his way back to the entrance, a dark Fae flying up to him. Tiny white fireflies fluttered around the small dragon as he fanned his crests. “The passage we were working on is back to square one,” the Fae motioned, moving slow enough for the learning Imperial to understand.
“That’s just your luck, isn’t it, Kiran?” The Imperial sighed, looking over in the direction where the Fae and a few others had been working on making more space. “You can take a break from it if you’d like, but—“
“Hi-ho, from hunting we return!” A Spiral triumphantly called, an arrow bouncing off the stone wall with a harsh clank. His bright grin faded as he saw the look of concern on Kyan’s face. “No sign of the brothers, sir. My apologies,” the youth dipped his head.
“I understand, Swithin. I’ll go look myself. Go store your findings,” the large dragon ordered, spreading his wings.
The Imperial took off down into the depths of Greatwyrm’s Breach, calling for the brothers. ”Arianwyn? Cavador?”
He had been searching for days. They could be anywhere. His throat was dry from shouting their names.
The Imperial spotted something brown and white around a large boulder. Red accented the ground, and he thought he saw something move. Carefully he drew closer, starting to say the names once again. But his voice caught in his throat. Brown whiskers were winding across the ground from two heads, and a gust of wind passed by, sending pieces of glittering white antlers rolling until they caught on rocks. Their tails created an X, a smaller boulder at the intersection. Their crystal-like wings were shattered; only one of them was completely free of the stone's grasp. One of the heads stirred, bloodstained tears rolling down the young dragon's cheek as his chest shook, fighting for air. Kyan stepped back, horrified. What would he do now? It didn't seem like they could do anything in their state... Did he have to kill them, the dragons he raised and loved like they were his children? The head stirred again, trying to open his mouth.
"K...... Kya....n...." The broken dragon said. "It...s.....me....C......Cav..a....dor.."
Kyan stared blankly, eyes clouded in fear. Cavador, the caretaker of all familiars, now a monster...
"We won't.........hurt you.....promise......" The young Imperial slowly and shakily reached out his paw, claws weakly scraping the ground. He lifted the one wing slightly, a painful smile fighting to appear on his face. "I'm fine.....see?"
Cav, face it, we can't live. Don't you see? To all of them, we're a monster now...
No, Ari, we have to live. Please, Ari, don't give up, don't let your mind slip. We're too young.
You don't understand. We can't change their minds. Besides, no amount of magic will fix me. Everything is broken except my mind.
I can help you. Please, brother! Kyan still loves us! He would find a way to make you better!
The head of Cavador slowly moved to face his brother, small whimpers catching in his throat. Kyan noticed the brown eye of Arianwyn flicking between his brother and adopted father. They must be talking to each other. Arianwyn slowly opened his mouth, trying to say something to the Imperial watching them, but the only sound he could make was a slight growl. Kyan backed up, and Cavador looked back to him.
"Kyan.....D...don't go........"
