B I O G R A P H Y

Many lifetimes ago, Shuten loved a girl. She held his heart tight between her claws, and he worshiped the ground she walked on. She was everything to him, and he longed to show her that he could be worth her time, her affections. More than anything, he wanted her love. He was ruled by that desire even though he knew that it was the most foolish thing he'd ever felt, and he dreamed every day of a way that would make her his, make him hers.

The Arena was one of those dreams. He arrived there just in time to become a part of the new team fights that were becoming all the rage, and his partner in battle was to be Ibaraki, a boisterous Imperial whose hot-blooded heart was evident from the start. Shuten like his partner's enthusiasm and passion, particularly in battle, and they turned out to be superb partners. Ibaraki's stalwart fighting stance allowed Shuten to do battle in a more calculated way, lashing out at critical places on an opponent's body, weakening key joints while Ibaraki dealt the blows that would finish them off. Their fights were entertaining and heavily attended as a result, and they lived off their spoils like the champions they were.

But they left the Arena when the venue changed ownership and the fights got dirty. As they left, though, they swore an oath to each other, promising they would never face battle without the other at their side, that they could not ever imagine doing so again. Soon after that, their oath was made real, when Ibaraki perished rather violently and was reborn months later in a distant land, where Shuten discovered him by the grace of fate.

He realized quickly that Ibaraki remembered nothing of his past life save for the oath he had sworn, and a brief, hazy notion of death. Instead of wounding his friend by laying out every detail, though, Shuten let it be, afraid to start over after losing so much. But Ibaraki knew they were bound to one another somehow, and despite everything, they became close once again.

They returned from many deaths each, one always seeking the other. The world seemed duller when they were kept apart by the time between resurrections, and each reunion was brighter, each rebuilt friendship stronger. Shuten especially loved the way they sparred, because with every death they went through, they became better fighters, and their sparring matches were more exciting.

But he also loved his girl just as much, and when he finally tried to court her, she crushed his dreams on the spot.

Her rejection stung worse than any wound he had ever known. It threw him into a haze, and when he wasn't sleeping restlessly, he was fighting. Shuten refused to stand down because doing so meant that he would have to face his broken heart, and he could not do it, not even with Ibaraki's help.

The rashness borne of heartache killed him quickly. He picked a fight well beyond his skill level, and though they won, only Ibaraki survived. Shuten lay in his arms as he died, drifting in and out of a dark emptiness that he supposed was death creeping in. He numbly registered that for the first time, he was seeing Ibaraki weep, and past the ringing in his ears, he heard his partner in battle confess to the deepest part of his heart: Ibaraki loved Shuten.

Shuten died before he could really decide if he felt the same. He died feeling hollow, like he had missed not just one chance with his girl, but a second with Ibaraki, and somehow, that second chance lost upset him even more.

Of course, he remembered none of this when he was resurrected into Umbra Sanguis. He became himself again, training as a warrior under the tutelage of the clan's senior fighters, rediscovering all the facets of combat he'd learned so many times. The motions felt familiar to him, repetitive in the most comforting of ways, and he enjoyed his training immensely. It felt like home.

But at night, the dreams troubled him. He saw another Imperial, caught glimpses of red and gold, felt immeasurable sorrow and love in one stroke. His memory failed him; he could recall no such dragon, but he suspected that his dreams held a familiar element, an important one.

His suspicions were confirmed when a dragon named Ibaraki became a warrior of Umbra Sanguis alongside him. Suddenly, he dreamed of dying, his heart fluttering in a weak panic. He dreamed of a confession of love, one that was his, which failed, and one that was for him, which came too late. It struck him suddenly, and for the first time in many, many cycles, Shuten remembered everything he had ever known.

He was terrified to trust his memory, especially when it came so strongly from his dreams. To tell Ibaraki that he knew, that he understood was hard enough. To admit he felt the same was petrifying, because how long had it been? Perhaps Ibaraki's heart had moved on. But Shuten told him anyway, mustering up all of his courage for only three words.

"I remember you," he said as they sparred one day.

And somehow saying that, watching Ibaraki falter and then weep and laugh with joy, made saying "I love you, too" so much easier.
