Biography
BECIAS - Omen
There are rumors of a beast at the borders. It twists through the forest, mingling with the shadows, at home in the night. It watches, eyes roving everywhere. It is alone, as even the birds do not sing near it and the fireflies flee it, and it is enormous, enough to block out the moon when it rises to its full height. Rumors pass through the Moon Siren Coven every now and again, outlining its passing in detail. A favorite version of the story says that the beast is covered in blood when it goes by, a sure sign of death on the horizon.
Becias knows the rumors. They reach him on the wind, when the night breeze calls his name, waking him from his slumber. He knows the coven fears him; to them, he sees too much, knows too much. He represents everything they fear, and they dread to be exposed, as if that is what he'll do.
But he has no interest in shining a light on the deeds of a small religious sect, one that barely reaches beyond its tiny borders, too afraid to dream bigger. The crows that follow him steal the coven's bits and baubles, the shiny pieces that are left out, and the ravens steal their secrets in much the same way. He knows the high priestess's mate travels to the Shifting Expanse and back. He knows the caravans stay far away because they fear the magic that might be wrought upon them if they draw too close. He knows the names of the youngest hatchlings, the names of the newly dead. He could never live among the coven's witches, not when they fear him so deeply, but he may as well be their shadow, as he knows them so truly and deeply.
He also knows when to brace for the coming storm, and even when he wishes to leave, to hide from the coven and their cruel interpretations of his existence, some force keeps drawing him back. He is their herald, whether he chooses to accept it or not. Just as his beautiful black birds carry news to him, he is a beacon to the witches. He is change, a splash of blood against the smoky night, a shift in the direction of the moon-kissed wind. They may invent stories about seeing him, but they only truly see him before the transformation arrives. Sometimes it is death, sometimes it is rebirth, but always, always, Becias appears to them before the change.
He cannot explain it, even if he wanted to. He could not, on the single occasion the high priestess saw him, demanded his purpose from him. He is a wanderer, a ghost at the coven's borders, and he is their sign of change.
It is no wonder he inspires such fear in them.
