Biography
CHATOYANCE PEARLPLUME
The Shimmering Enchantress
Chatoyance hatched into a family with a long history of peculiar experiences with magic, and leaving their ancestral lair in the Starwood Strand to travel the globe. The only oddity about Chatoyance's own life in light of this is that rather than being struck by a strange magical turn of fortune, her myriad complicated enchantments cause them to happen to others. The shimmering Coatl is a remarkably versatile enchantress, capable of weaving wisps of her magic into spells and charms of every conceivable stripe. She can shroud herself in invisibility, send dragons to sleep with blankets of magical drowsiness, or cloak earthbound Snappers in their own pockets of anti-gravity. Long years of careful practice and repetition have granted her mastery over her art. In other branches of thaumaturgy her skills are sufficient but nothing special. Her proficiency in subtly means she finds it difficult to quickly muster up the raw force required for combative casting, for one thing, and in general she prefers creating enchantments tailored to each situation to actively spellbinding on the fly. She doesn't typically bother with wards or talismans, and while she finds divination, ritual magic, and curse-breaking fascinating she is an amateur in those fields. Her enchantments are versatile enough to suit most of her needs.
Chatoyance's knowledge was derived from a multitude her sources. Her own family and clanmates of course passed down their own Arcane wisdom, and when she was full grown she studied at a large university under the tutelage of the Arcanist's exalted scholars. She learned most of what she knows about enchanting theory from the Observatory's magicists; but her enchanting methods were taught to her by a very different source.
For Chatoyance's mother was a true virtuoso weaver, renowned for producing silks with impossibly fine weaves and using her loom to produce textiles with details and decorations so intricate and precise they almost seemed to come to life in the folds of the fabric. The bits of magic her mother wove into the fabric along with the fine thread certainly helped there. It was at her mother's loom that Chatoyance discovered how to weave her own magic into enchantments like threads into textiles, with each bit of Arcane energy unique in intent and focus contributing to the carefully-crafted spell as a single metallic thread would contribute to a tapestry telling a grand story. To this day, Chatoyance keeps several looms in her den at the top of a marble hill- some she uses to carry on her family's traditional art, selling off rolls of iridescent fabrics with almost the same skill as her mother, and others of her own design which she uses to craft her fabled enchantments. Occasionally, she meshes the two mediums together, and creates silks and satins so fine and shimmering that they leave her buyers spellbound.
The Coatl learned her family's lessons well, and as she has grown in years so too has she grown greatly in wisdom and insight. She is known almost as much for her eccentric manner and keen ability to read others as she is for her magical and textile crafts. With her den decked out in all the Arcane trappings of the occult, the shimmering curtains that drape across each door shrouding what lies beyond from view, her small- but very knowing- smile, and the sparkle in her eyes that speaks to some private joke, it's easy to see how many dragons may feel off-balance inside Chatoyance's peculiar corner of the world. What does she know, from the divination rituals she so often dabbles in? What has she seen? What can she do?
If you happen to pass through the Demesne and are in want of fine garments, or a spell tailor-made to suit your needs, or simply a fascinating (if bewildering) conversation, you should drop by Chatoyance's den. Spend a little time watching the tapestries that hang from the marble walls, see their stories come to life across their shimmering surfaces stirred by a draft from nowhere in particular. Did those embroidered figures just move, or was it a trick of your imagination? Or a trick of her imagination? And if she offers you a cup of tea, rest assured that it's her own special blend, a delicious mixture of herbs from Mila's garden blended with her very own enchanting secret ingredients.
