One flash meant danger, two flashes meant it was safe; but she saw three flashes that night from beyond the bog and they had never talked about what three flashes meant. Melusine clenched and unclenched her jaw repeatedly as she crouched in the darkness. The Mire wasn’t a very pleasant place to be stuck in during the daylight and it was much less inviting at night. The swamp seemed more alive in the moonlight, the air filled with a cacophony of croaks and rustling. She was already on edge and the incessant noise was no help. The flashes repeated their pattern -- one, two…. three -- and Melusine could not help but grimace. Unease rippled through her as she contemplated her next move. Should she charge? Was it safe? Dangerous? Her thoughts raced over one another; there were too many unknown factors. How could she make a decision without knowing any details? ’Serves me right for agreeing to this stupid absurdity in the first place’ she chided herself. Gritting her teeth, she considered her options. She could go crashing through the trees and murk to go surprise whatever had surprised her partner. She could also turn tail and sneak out under the cover of darkness with no one the wiser. Her partner, however, would be left in the clutches of whatever they encountered. Neither of those choices seemed desirable. In fact, they both could very well end up in death - of her or her partner. Seconds ticked by before a third option occurred to her. Her stiff muscles groaned in protest as she rose from her crouched position and began a slow creep through the foliage. She was careful to avoid stepping in puddles or on sticks lest the noise reveal her whereabouts. Deftly, she circled closer and closer to the last place she saw the flashes. One, two…. three. The flashes were closer this time, brighter, as she narrowed in on their location. An involuntary gasp escaped her as she finally caught sight of her partner. She quickly clamped a clawed hand over her mouth as she surveyed the scene before her, relying on the darkness to keep her presence hidden. She could just barely make out the silhouettes of something amidst the shadows. Could it be? Had they finally found it? By the Shadowbinder... Melusine’s lips curled into a hesitant smile as moved into the clearing and into her partner’s line of sight. ”You found it." She beamed, though she knew the gloom obscured her expression. Her spirit soared as her partner flashed their light again, one… two… three, illuminating the area. In the short bursts of light, she noted the crumbling etched pillars and large stone platform. She grinned. After all these years, her dreams were finally within arm’s reach. Who said the legends were dead? | ____ |
