No soul has ever heard Carbon speak. In fact, no soul has heard him make a sound. Even his footsteps, heavy as he is, fall silent and rarely leave prints upon the earth.

Born in the Shifting Expanse beside his Charge, Bruins, she believed she was alone for two years until Carbon revealed himself, falling before her into the brunt of a pangolin's swiping claw. That was their relationship for a while. Carbon always fought for Bruins and then disappeared, never asking for anything in return, always watching her from afar. Bruins would not flinch when Carbon took a blow for her, or when he ripped apart an aggressing group of predators, and she would not offer any help or thanks.

Once Bruins left the Shifting Expanse, though, she became a bit more considerate. She would leave a helping of her meal for her Guardian and would even cast a few spells from behind the safety of Carbon's assault whenever they got into trouble. These days trouble only rarely finds his Charge, so Bruins orders Carbon to find trouble in Coliseum venues instead.

Her orders fulfill him, the shadow with a master.
