Heartred Croaker
Guardian
Nurturing - Considerate - Idealistic

Oak had hatched in a grove of apple trees on the edge of the Shrieking Wilds watched over by a powerful Dryad, Amara, who cared for his lonely egg and came to raise him. It was her magic, as well as the influence of the Gladekeeper flowing through her grove and his egg, that caused antlers to grow from his head and an ever-growing tangle of vines to erupt from his shoulders in place of wings. While he seemed like a normal hatchling otherwise, it became obvious as he grew older that he also shared some of Amara's talent for caring for the plants of her grove. He could foster their growth and cure ailments in the trees and flowers there simply by speaking to them. They even seemed to listen and respond to him.

But as he reached adulthood, Amara knew that he could not spend his life in the small patch of forest that she was bound to. "You have to find your own path," she told him one night. "Spend time amongst other dragons, travel the Viridian Labyrinth. I must stay here to protect this tiny little patch of forest, but you can do anything you want."

Oak was doubtful at first, but Amara had always had his best interests at heart. He left the only place he had ever called home and ventured out into the world. He spent time with many clans and even traveled beyond the Viridian Labyrinth, to experience life in other regions of Sornieth.

He found that he did not quite fit in with other dragons. Most thought him odd, and Oak did not quite understand some of their motivations and ways of life. He began to yearn for the deep forest and the relative solitude he had grown up with, simply caring for and nurturing the life around him.

He returned to the Shrieking Wilds. Amara had told him to find his own path, that he did not have to be bound to her grove. But this forest was vast and deep. Surely there was somewhere, something, that needed him the way Amara's trees needed her. And so Oak wandered amongst the trees, vines, and brambles, searching for somewhere that felt like home.

It was during this period that he discovered what he felt to be his purpose.

In the early hours of the morning, with light just barely beginning to peak through the dense canopy of the Shrieking Wilds and the incessant sounds of animal life around him beginning to change with the coming of day, Oak heard a call of distress. A baby Heartred Croaker called from the underbrush near The River that carved through the forest, injured by a fall and abandoned by its family. He scooped the tiny amphibian up, and as spoke to him, the baby's crying ceased. His eyes fixed on Oak's, still wide and fearful. Oak felt such empathy and for this little creature, lost and alone like he could have been if it were not for Amara's kindness and compassion, and he knew that he had to help.

There were so many other creatures that needed help like this one. the Dryad had been right, his destiny was not to care for a tiny patch of forest. Perhaps his destiny was to help the creatures that lived in the forest. To raise those who did not have a family, to nurture those that were sick or hurt, or to simply provide direction for those who were lost.

So Oak spends his days traveling the Shrieking Wilds in search of all forms of life who might need him. Some, like the Heartred Croaker he came to call Crim, stay with him through his journeys. Some, he takes back to Amara's grove to make a new home. And some return to their own lives.

Oak eventually found a place he could call home during his travels, a clan called Bronze Willow that accepts anyone in need of a place or a family. He even developed a relationship with the clan's herbalist and healer, a Bogsneak named Shorga, and they raised many hatchlings together.

But Oak never stayed too long, always feeling that he was needed elsewhere. Everywhere he wanders, the plant life thrives. The brambles and thick brush of the Shrieking Wilds parts to allow him passage, as if aware of his altruistic and sometimes idealistic mission. And any being in need of aid within his reach will surely find it.

Oak's Charges

UGR2r29.png

Crim belongs to Oak, a Skydancer raised by a Dryad named Amara in a remote apple tree grove deep in the Shrieking Wilds. Crim was rescued by Oak as a baby, injured by a fall from his nest near The River and abandoned. He lives in the vines that grow from Oak's back, going with him everywhere and helping him locate other beings in need. Some of the creatures they help go on about their lives afterward, some find homes with the dragons of Oak's clan, and some are brought back to that grove to join a growing family of ragtag misfits. Crim greatly enjoys visiting the Grove, but would never think of leaving Oak's side in his adventures.
