II was born to be a sacrifice. Chosen by the elders before I was even hatched, their hand-picked golden idol of flesh and blood. My heart was to be given to the Lightbringer and my flesh to the clan. It was a great honor, or so I was told, to be the one to feed the greater power and in turn, I would earn a blessing for the clan for the years to come. Over the years I was groomed to become exactly what they wanted, I was kept isolated and secure in an offshoot of the temple where they taught me the ways of their God. They said the Lightbringer brought the clan peace, sunshine, and gold fortune in all things but when I'd peak thru the shuttered windows all I could see was a swirling darkness. At night cold crept beneath the sliding paper door where I slept quietly on the mat that I called my bed, the chill would lick at my flesh and warn me of the harsh reality that lay just beyond the safety of the temple.

When the High Priest would guide me thru the gardens and speak of my destiny my mind would often wander, gliding thru false memories of flying thru the sky and hunting in the forests of deep green. My mouth would almost salivate at the thought of warm flesh, hearts still beating beneath my tongue, torn fur and popping blood vessels. "What is your truth?" the question I was always asked would cut thru my blood-soaked reverie and I would respond almost mechanically with, "I am blessed to bring feast and fortune to the clan and honor to the Lightbringer."

The sway of my lengthy tail stirred up dust from the creaky floorboards where I stood in the center of the room patiently awaiting my teacher. It was my 3rd summer and my last. Straying webs of sunlight spilled thru the open windows, enveloping my sleek bodice in a comfortable warmth. I had never learned to fear my destiny as I was born to die as we all are but as my remaining hours on this earth grew near I could feel my crooked heart start to beat faster. Blood flowed thru my veins hot and swift, sweat beaded beneath my neatly groomed locks and I swept back my bangs as an elaborately dressed dragon entered greeting me with a broad smile.

"Today is the day child. You must be excited. What is your truth?" they asked.

"I am blessed to bring feast and fortune to the clan and honor to the lightbringer." I responded habitually in a monotone voice, not letting my nerves squeak thru my teeth.
