AURELIA

Wheat Field

xxxThere were gentle golden stalks as far as the eye could see, spreading far into the distance. Standing in the middle of the field was a wildclaw, gently running his hands over the delicate army of wheat.
Aurelia never understood why Alexis was so drawn to the fields. Perhaps, she thought, it was a reminder of the family home that he had lost. She had lost that home as well, though, but it was so easy for him to forget that. He had left her and everyone else behind, after all.
She never missed the fields as much as he did, but she did miss him more than anything. Even enough to follow him to House Ivar, enemies of their old home. Even if House Ivar had fallen now, their world was far from being at peace, as was Alexis. He had changed, and both of them knew it.
He was sadder now, and his rancor was still there, even if it wasn’t as powerful. It seemed more and more unlikely every day that he would follow her home. . .

xxxOne day, however, Aurelia planned to bring him back to their family. Then everything could go back to the way that it had once been, and they could be happy again.
He could have as many hours as he wanted in infinite fields of fawny, tragically golden wheat, and she could be happy to know that he was back with her. Safe and no longer under Nozette’s thumb.
Thoughts for another time.

xxxToday, Aurelia had a reason to interrupt Alexis from his wheat-filled memories.
She needed his assistance on a delivery that might turn out to be dangerous. Of course, Aurelia was a proficient fighter and could take care of herself, but she wanted his company. The two of them had not spoken in a very long time, and when they did, Alexis usually talked of duties and tasks that must be done. Subjects that she understood, but that always seemed to take a little bit away from Alexis every time that he brought them up- every time that he pushed his own desires further and further aside.
She wanted something softer today.

xxx— Hey! — Aurelia called to him, and Alexis immediately glanced up from his speculation. — How are the fields looking today? — She asked, after coming up to him. — Did the farmer listen to your advice about preventing mosaic virus?

xxxHis expression, which was usually guarded, softened a bit with the topic. Alexis loved helping farmers with their work, especially if that work involved wheat.

xxx— Of course, and his field is much happier for it. Did you need anything, Aurelia? —

xxxThere it was again - the instant question. He never let the two of them just have a calm moment together, there was always work on his mind. Aurelia felt a faint rising of fury, this was all because of Nozette’s brainwashing, she knew, but she quickly quenched the anger. Today was about Alexis, not Nozette. Today was about reaching a part of her oldest friend that he had hidden away since they lost their home. And perhaps, today would be a day for him to remember how much she cared for him as well.

xxx— How did you save the fields? — Aurelia asked, pretending that she had not heard his question.

xxx— I told him to plant later next season and I gave him the name of a few good mages that I know who specialize in nature magic. But what is this really about, Aurelia? — Alexis’s expression was back to a frown.

xxxSometimes Aurelia felt as though she reminded him of everything that he was trying to forget.

xxx— I need your help with a delivery, — She said, refusing to back down. — It’s just a normal parcel but it’s. . . going to somebody important and I didn’t want to make this delivery alone.

xxx— I’m sure that you could handle it yourself, — Alexis said, looking conflicted. — I have some. . . messages of my own to deliver today. Are you sure that you need my help?

xxxShe had enough of his aloofness.

xxx— It’s going to one of the Yggerhall, — Aurelia snapped, and just as she suspected, Alexis went quiet.

xxx— Why are you making that delivery? — He asked, in a serious tone. A concerned tone.

xxxAurelia could not help but feel a smidgeon of delight.

xxx— Because they asked for me specifically. Apparently you aren’t the only one in Besart with a secret past, — Aurelia said, importantly. — And I thought that you might want to help escort me on this mission, since we will have to go to Sigvard. By ourselves, as soon as possible.

xxxAlexis stared at her for a long, long moment as though trying to recognize her. As though realizing that he wasn’t the only dragon who was willing to change and distort and kill for the sake of his alliances. And hers, of course, were to him, even if he did not realize that yet.

xxx— Fine, — Alexis said. — I’ll come with you. But if anyone tries to lay a finger on you or the parcel, I am going to flay them myself.

xxx— Don’t worry, — Aurelia said. — Nothing is going to happen.

xxxShe just needed a few days alone with him on the journey, and then he would remember. The two of them would bond again, without Nozette, without his duties to get in the way. And he would see that she was strong and she was still important, even if she didn’t live on the farm anymore.
Their old family was gone as long as Alexis was away, stealing his moments in the wheat from other dragon’s fields. But that didn’t mean that he could never come back. She would bring him home, one errand at a time.
This plan will work well, she thought. Just as long as nobody looked inside her carefully wrapped parcel to discover that there was nothing inside.

Cutlass

Aurelia cleaned the edge of the blade carefully, gently rubbing the surface with a silken cloth. She had just finished fixing the nicks and cracks from a particularly tough training session, but such was the life of a blade. It would be beaten and smashed and distorted in the hand of its welder, but as long as there was time for recovery, the cutlass would always return, clean and ready to complete its duty once more.

Some days she felt like her soul was entwined with her cutlass. It had protected her on many a mission in the streets of House Ivar’s territory, and would protect her for the many still to come. She cherished her blade because it brought her power, strength, and independence. It gave her the opportunity to grow and find more of herself as a dragon, to find a worth that did not involve loyalty to any house or territory.
At the same time, however, she often felt like a sword - ready to be used for the sake of another, always present for another’s benefit. The cutlass gave her independence, but it also trapped her deeper in her role. She wondered if she would ever be able to truly serve herself, as this sword could only ever be its own master if she were to abandon it to her mantle forever and ever.

It was times like these where she stopped being angry with Alexis - stopped thinking about why he left or why he was giving his life to the pursuit of revenge, in the hand of another dragon.
All of them were just weapons anyway, it just depended in whose hand their lives would rest.

The delivery help

xxxxxxxThe package on her back was well tied and she would not let it fall during her flight all the way to Porto. She was tasked with a delivery to Andras, by her Queen's orders. Since her work would make her pass by Porto, Nozette tasked Aurelia with dropping this to a long and old friend, who now lived on the gorgeous seaside town.

xxxxxxxOnce there, she found two of the cutest little hatchlings, named Kat and Lulu. Lulu was so pure and kind, Aurelia almost couldn't believe that she was part of that harbour scenario, but her little dagger said otherwise. Kat was so full of energy and was always the first to speak. By Gods an Goddess, she had energy!

xxxxxxxLulu was the first to put senses on Kat, and this time, the little goat eyed skydancer wouldn't pickpocket the new visitor. By Lulu's insistence, Kat agreed on taking Aurelia to a station and from there, Aurelia would follow her patch to Helgardr keep where Andras was.

xxxxxxxWhat a good afternoon the coalt had with the two little girls. Soon they became good friends on a short journey. Aurelia was pleased to tell them about her past on a farm, how she was streetwise orphan now working as a delivery courier; and was amazed by how much Kat and Lulu said about themselves. She did not expect them to be children of important dragons on Porto. Aurelia smiled from ear to ear, knowing now that even being related to importante dragons, these two surely could be fine on their own. As she had a rough past, knowing this warmed her heart. The new generation for sure was one step ahead of the previous one.

~~haha goldenrod go brrrrrr~~ Goldenrod has got to be one of my absolute favorite colors, so it was so hard for me to pick my favorite out of this tab. However, I think turquoise has a nice contrast here with the goldenrod glimmer.
