Hatchlings tend to be terrible fliers. They crash into everything, provided they can get off the ground to begin with, and in a clan with many hatchlings, it's not uncommon to see trees with bells tied in their branches to alert the clan to off-course trainees. Rocks and pillars and other formations are sometimes enchanted with soft down cushions, and powerful witches may carve out a sand pit for softer crash landings. Flying hatchlings are a busy sort, always requiring some new protection from themselves.

But Alusair knows they have to learn some time, and he loves to share his own passion for flying. As a result, he became something of an instructor for the hatchlings in his birth clan, teaching them even earlier how to right their course and avoid all the bumps and bruises that come with failed landings, or even take-offs. It's a challenging job to be sure, especially when he meets hatchlings that are behind their peers in skill, or when he tries to teach a hatchling who wants only to fly all on their own, but on the whole, it's a rewarding life, and it combines his natural compassion with his deep love of flying.
