Backstory
Nihlus was born in a clan devoted to the Arcanist and the sciences of arcane magic, yet he himself had little magic to be seen. Try as he might, no matter what he did, his magic refused to show itself for more than a few seconds at a time--and when it did, it spurted from his clawtips as a sickly shade of green, not the light pink his clan had hoped for. And Nihlus tried his best not to let that fact bother him--he didn't have much interest in arcane magic to begin with--but after a while, the disapproving stares from his peers and mentors in the clan made him feel out-of-place and unwanted. So, after suffering enough of that for one lifetime, he left.
Nihlus took to wandering the countryside instantly. It was a perfect fit for him, a dragon who never wanted to settle and had no familial ties he needed to worry about. It was just him and the land and the creatures for miles in any direction. But... it was also lonely. On occasion, he would run into other travelers like himself, but they ever stayed very long before moving on, and eventually, he found himself missing the constant companionship that came with clan life. It took him a while to find a clan that would accept him as he was. Years, in fact. He traveled all the way across the world, meeting people and animal friends on the way, until he stumbled into the clan of the Andromidae. The leader of the clan, Nyx, was beautiful and frightening, kind and cruel, all at once. She was like his mother and a god all rolled into one. He decided he liked her, and after a few weeks of staying with her clan and meeting the other dragons--all of them as different as he--Nihlus decided that yes, this clan would be his forevermore. Some day, he might leave it, but for now, it was home. |

A Tale of Broken Love
One day, while wandering through a particularly empty section of forest, Nihlus stumbled upon the most beautiful grove of mushrooms he'd ever seen. There were large ones, small ones, red ones, green ones, but possibly more surprisingly, he wasn't there alone. A young dragon covered in vines and pale blue roses was sleeping peacefully in the center of the clearing, surrounded by the soft glow of natural bioluminescence. Nihlus didn't want to wake her, but at the same time, he desperately wanted to know her name. Who was this beautiful creature?
A few moments later, she awoke, rising with the graceful beauty only a dragon from another world could posses--or so he thought, at least. When she realized she was not alone, a small, embarrassed smile crawled up her face. Tilting her head, she asked his name. And, like a fool, he gave it to her. The beautiful dragon's name was Shatter, and she, like him, was an outcast from her clan. Rather than wishing to bask in the light of the Lightweaver, she preferred the cool, quiet shade of the forest, where she could comfortably hide and let her flowers grow. But, like her flowers, she was cruel and unrelenting as well as fragile and beautiful. Her words were like thorns in his skin, and the more she spoke, the deeper they dug, and the more he found himself trapped in her clutches. Nihlus had never known love until that day, and he wasn't entirely sure if he ever would again, if she ever let him go. Every things she said, no matter what it was, buried itself in his heart to the point where he felt full to bursting with joy. Was this what it felt like to find a soulmate? But alas, it was not. True to her name, Shatter was a beautiful thing made of hundreds of small, sharp pieces. And the deeper they buried themselves in him, the more it hurt. But yet, he couldn't bring himself to let go. No-one had ever spoken to him like she was, like he was something special and lovely, despite his mossy exterior, despite his unsociable personality. So he let her entrance him with her words, and he let her take what she wished from him, because it felt good to be praised, to be wanted--and because he dared let himself hope that maybe, maybe, if he gave her enough of his love, she might give him some of hers in return. |
