xxxx There really was no way to be sure how many eggs had been laid before the cave in, but Maw insisted she only recalled laying four this time around. The fifth hatchling was found off to the side from the others, poking the pulverized shell fragments that had recently contained him with his foot. The distance could have been explained by the nest shifting and settling during one of the aftershocks. However Maw and Xuk had taken time to check their respective bone collections before heading to the Nesting Grounds, so it was only a guess.

Xuk's voice scraped through the air like stone on stone "What do you make of that?" His nod in the direction of the lumbering gaggle of hatchlings left little doubt to what "that" was.

Maw rocked back on her haunches. "We may never know. It seems clear to me that the Earthshaker spoke and the rock answered his call, but was this the answer or was this the warning?" She shifted the bird skull back to scratch her nose. "We may just have to wait and see. Patience. That is always the answer."

And so they were patient. As patient as only two Snappers in Dragonshome could be. Patient to the point that their clan leader’s patience ran out. She sent the clan mage to find out what they had learned. His report was nothing much, pebbles were more impressive, but at least something had been done. The hatchling was growing normally and observation of play with his siblings showed neither dangerous inclinations nor early marks of genius. The only apparent gifts Veles had inherited so far were the ability to blend in with the lair’s walls and his parents’ inexhaustible patience. This made him a frequent victor at hide and seek, but did nothing to explain the massive earthquake and mystery surrounding his birth.

They concluded that his purpose would be revealed in due time and fretting would not make it any faster. So they waited.

They were a quiet clan. Several members preferred to slip into torpor once the festival season was completed. Some trained the young folk to serve the Earthshaker, but a few of the younger dragons sought their fortunes in other lands or retreated to solitude to choose a name. Finally only Veles and his as yet unnamed brother remained from the festival clutches.

“Veles” his brother said softly “I am going to meditate deeply upon the subject of my proper and true name soon. I expect to be in quiet contemplation for at least a month. Mother and Father have said they will be going into torpor soon, and the clan in general will be very quiet this time of year. You have never mentioned a desire for deep meditation. Do you have plans of your own?”

“I had thought I might find a calling. But I have waited and waited and nothing has come. Do you think I have not been solid enough? Have I angered the Earthshaker?”

His brother cocked his head quizzically at him. “Is that what you are waiting for? An earthquake? Would you be satisfied with a rockslide or cavern collapse? Because I am really tempted to drop a few boulders on you right now.” He swung his tail and smacked him on the rump. Hard. “Being patient is not the same as being passive, you fool. Maybe you should have done some meditation instead of moping around dark corridors waiting for a cataclysm to shake you from your rut.”

He cut off his protest before Veles choked out more than a gravelly “But....” and continued “Everyone believes you were chosen for something. No one believes it will be handed to you on a silver platter.“ he smiled at him with genuine warmth “Except you, you bonehead.”

Veles hung his head sheepishly. Had he really been such a colossal fool? No wonder no signs had come. The gods help those who help themselves and the Earthshaker in particular helps those who help others. Why else would he stand watch by the column when all the other gods had left? Maybe that was what Veles was supposed to do, go forth and find some way to help dragonkind.

"I hope it is not too late. That the Earthshaker will accept my service, whatever it is. Do you think I still have a chance to find my purpose?"

"Dearest brother, you have your entire life ahead of you. We have only just turned a month old, I think you have whatever chance you want to take. However, you must go out and find it, not wait for it to find you."

"Then it is settled, Brother. Thank you. Please tell our parents when you see them that I plan to head out tomorrow. I have some packing to do."
