"Come with me little one. You're safe now, I promise."
The young mirror stuck his nose out of the grass. He knew there was a dragon in front of him but his heat-sensing eyes saw nothing. Slowly, he emerged. Standing before him was a brilliant white Coatl with a relaxed and gentle air. Dark runes pulsed along his body, fading out of existence and popping into being every so often. The runes made him nervous. There was something wrong about them.
"My name is Above. Come, I'll show you your new home," the coatl said with a smile. The runes swimming across his face flickered.
The mirror followed. He wasn't taken far. They stopped in a wide and beautiful meadow. Above led him into a hole dug from the side of a rolling hill. The inside of the cave was warm, well lit and nicely decorated. Precious metals were displayed on the walls and there was a comfy-looking nest stuffed with hay and feathers in one corner.
"Make yourself at home while I get you something to eat. You must be starving." The mirror was, but he remained quiet.
In a short while a meal was placed in front of him. The mirror ate without even noticing what it was. The runes on the coatl shimmered.

Help.
The room was filled with bright lights. He couldn't see. He couldn't sense. He couldn't smell.
No. Stop.
Above was there. Approaching him. Towering over him. The runes flashed. Multiplied.
He struggled but couldn't move. Rope bound his legs and held down his wings.
Please.
There was darkness in front of him. A wispy evil wrapped itself around him. Tendrils wormed into his eyes, his nose. He felt his magic draining. Above was there, consumed in the same darkness.
No.

The mirror opened his eyes. He was in Above's warm nest, thick furs draped over him. The coatl was nowhere to be found. Relief flooded through him.
The mirror stood and stretched. He caught sight of his wings and gasped. Instead of their previous colour they were pure white and covered with large patches of deep blue. The blue markings shimmered and moved similar to Above's runes.
No!
The mirror knew what had happened. He could feel it. The Shade coursed within him, just as it did within Above. He was part of it now, forever.
"Ah! You're alive!" Above appeared in the doorway, his voice filled with genuine happiness. His body was white again. His dark runes pulsed gently.
"You made a wonderful subject, you know."
