Biography

========= Faith works for the Lightning Imperial Aerospace Heritage Library, formerly known as the Lightning Imperial Aeronautical Heritage Library. It's on the ground floor of the Baikonur Agency Headquarters, which is actually the publicly accessible portion of a Lightning Imperial Air Force Base built into the eastern wall of the Carrion Canyon.

The library consists of a main atrium and the archives. The atrium is hardly an atrium, since it doesn't have any windows, and the ceiling isn't any higher than the rest of the first story. But it's a large space lined to the brim with books about aviation, railroads, sailing, spaceflight, and cars, from the Shifting Expanse and beyond. It even has small fiction and childrens' sections for the dragons who live on-base. There's no shortage of comfortable chairs and couches for dragons of any size to lounge on and read, or desks for the more studious of visitors. Food isn't allowed anywhere in the library, but the librarians keep a small bowl of hard candies at their desk which anyone can take. The hatchlings that live on-base are well aware of this, and when school lets out, a few usually come to the library to do homework for free sweets.

The archives are behind the atrium, and a librarian usually sits guard at a desk to keep people from wandering in with food or drinks. It's where they keep the oldest, most precious paper artifacts about aeronautical and astronautical history Lightning has to offer, along with declassified legal documents dating back hundreds of years. Old textbooks, too, find their way here. Everything is in the process of digitization; papers are scanned in the back corner, and e-mailed off to MIR, a local artificial intelligence, to sort and make public. Nothing leaves the library physically, but dragons are free to request copies of any material inside. To enter, you have to sign a waiver to make sure you won't damage the precious documents inside; that waiver is only good for six months, to ensure no one grows lax on the guidelines of use.

The LIAHL has an interesting legal history within the framework of the federal government. See, they're a federal service, and Lightning has a tendency to make its federal sources of information a little one-sided. There's a lot of information that's public knowledge, but rarely publicized. As such, the head librarians have a history of voicing discontent when material they receive for a given period that's recently been declassified doesn't paint a full picture of the history of the time period. In their eyes, it feels they're receiving propaganda and being asked to call it unbiased information. They work hard to ensure people have access to a truthful presentation of history. Unfortunately, such isn't always the case; items will mysteriously disappear from their online catalog, and there's little they can do about it. It's a strange predicament, because some items are hidden from the public to make sure people keep funding in the sciences, thus keeping the base, and LIAHL with it, alive. But in addition to hurting the library's academic credibility, historical revisionism is alive and well in Lightning, and many LIAHL librarians see themselves as a legal check to keep it from advancing further. People don't become librarians because they want to withhold an opportunity to learn.

Faith herself doesn't like getting involved in politics. She grew up in Earth, and Lightning politics are a whole new world to her. In fact, while she's working on her Ph.D, she got involved at the library mostly to keep herself from getting too much culture shock. The folks in Lightning weren't as mean as movies made them out to be, but the environment was unlike anything she'd ever seen before. Working in the windowless LIAHL kept her away from it, and thanks to the interflight standard decimal system, everything worked more or less the same as it had in Earth and Light, where she'd completed her undergrad. She thinks her native Lightning coworkers are fighting the good fight when they inquire with their higher-ups about why items are being held back from them. Their passion is unlike any she'd seen back at home, where freedom of history was a given. What she's unaware of, having previously worked for libraries operated by private institutions, is that the same issues surface all over Sorneith in federal libraries. It's just more pronounced in Lightning, where freedoms of speech aren't as explicit as in other flights.

Her favorite part of her job is when hatchlings start checking out books to get free candy, and watching them grow into little history nerds and take pride in reading from the grown-up section. (Okay, it only happened twice, but it still makes her happy.) Besides, the healthcare benefits Lightning gives federal workers are a huge plus, so it's a pretty good job.
