The unguent had only worked for a few days. Where it had worn off, the curse was creeping back over Khrysos, turning his skin to stone. They’d tried so many things already....

“Maybe Nozomi will have another solution.” Out loud, Cadimir queried, “Will you be all right here, old friend?”

“Now, Cadimir, I wasn’t born yesterday, you know.” Despite his predicament, Khrysos remained tranquil—but then, he’d been living with the curse for a long time.

Cadimir reported back to Nozomi, reporting that the unguent he’d prepared could only mitigate the curse, not remove it. The Imperial just shrugged when he heard this, but Cadimir’s despondence remained. On the way back to Khrysos, he stopped by his den and picked up an enormous sweater. It was very nearly finished; he could complete it by sundown.

Khrysos remained curled near the entrance, dozing peacefully. He wasn’t alone: A Snapper hatchling was doggedly trying to climb up his tail. She caught sight of Cadimir and gasped, tumbling onto the approaching Guardian’s toes. Cadimir’s face softened. “All right, little one?”

Hatchlings passed through the lair for combat training sometimes. The Guardian’s heart ached for this child: with awe because someday, she might behold the face of a god...and sadness because she was just as likely to fall in battle. As a veteran warrior, he knew the horrors of combat all too well.

~ ~ ~
It was odd, the things that stuck in the mind. Cadimir no longer remembered the clan he hailed from, but he did remember the need that had burned within him, eating away at his soul as the years had passed. It was the Guardian’s need to locate his Charge.

He had been so optimistic at first. The world was wide, and his Charge could be anywhere out there! By the end of the first year, he was still bright and optimistic.

By the end of the first decade, he was getting concerned. Surely his Search shouldn’t be taking so long?
His Charge could be anywhere out there! —The words that had once filled him with excitement now filled him with dread.

Decades and decades more...Soon bitterness had set in. It was not just his failure to find his Charge, but also how others magnified it. Many of the friends he’d made during his travels now turned him away, saying, “You must be doing something wrong.”

He turned to other Guardians for advice. Instead, he was met with scorn, the questions they hurled more like accusations: what did he think he was doing, why was he being so picky, why hadn’t he tried looking in this place or that? It was so difficult to answer them, but he tried anyway, because he didn’t know what else to do.

Still, it was marginally more preferable to being taken advantage of, once his bitterness turned to desperation. Unscrupulous dragons, feigning concern, coaxed him, “Now I know this isn’t your ideal job, it being a bit rough and all, but you haven’t looked here yet, eh? Stands to reason your Charge might be there, hm?” They handed him weapons, swords and daggers and hexes. And they told him to use them.

“Perhaps they’re here,” he thought, falling in alongside other mercenaries. “I’ve never been a mercenary before. I might find them here...”

“Or here,” he thought years later, as he entered the lair of a warlord. He was serving as a bodyguard, and while he despised the place, there was still the hope that—

“Or here...” In an underground fighting ring, where he worked as a guard. The eyes of the enslaved fighters bored into him, pleading for release. Though none of them had been his Charge, he would have gladly aided every single one...

~ ~ ~
When the Snapper asked, “What’s it like, being a warrior?” memories tumbled through Cadimir’s mind. So much exhaustion and pain; terror and sorrow and shame...

And Khrysos stirred. “It’s hard work,” he rumbled, “but it has its upsides. I’ve made plenty of great friends while training together with them.”

The curse could immobilize his skin, but not his great heart—and certainly not his mouth. The thought gave Cadimir a certain joy. Relieved, he sat down near the entrance and continued working on his project.

He had found his Charge after all, and it had made the entire harrowing journey worth it. Certainly there were some things he wished he could’ve done differently—but finding his Charge and discovering that they were a sterling character had been a tremendous relief to him. He’d been afraid it would be someone monstrous who’d drag him down even further....

Nightfall. A chill was settling in. The hatchling bade them goodbye, thanking them for their time, and trundled off across the grass. Cadimir took the now-finished sweater and drew it over his friend’s wings.

“Is that you, Cadimir?”

“Well, who else would it be?” he growled back, and they both laughed. Khrysos got gingerly to his feet, his stony skin cracking. Cadimir moved to his side and supported him as he moved back to his room.

There he lay, the sweater still draped clumsily over him. He probably couldn’t feel it, but nonetheless he said, “This is a nice piece of work.”

“I made it myself, you know.”

A quick grin. “You’re improving at this. I can barely feel the chill now. It fits so much better...”

He couldn’t feel it, Cadimir guessed, because the curse was encroaching further. Soon it would encase most of his body, leaving only his insides untouched. Looking at his old friend, Cadimir was once again filled with the burning need to search—not for his Charge now, but for a cure.

He would probably never know the same violence he’d encountered in his youth, nor did he wish to. But he was still a warrior, in a way. He’d fight off that curse till his very last breath—and protect the Charge he’d worked so hard to find.
