AMETORI TORA
Head Librarian
"The Arcane is always greedy
for knowledge."

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
___________________ The current master of a grand library that stood steadfast in this town, once with a mysterious owner that came and went as the winds did. Tora is a self-proclaimed alchemist and — a fact known little by others — the apprentice of the renowned Joachim Vogel.

The townsfolk know him as a quiet yet still considerate dragon; he has gradually warmed up to them over the years, but among his closest companions is when he is truly open. That, or when his subject of interest is brought up. But though passionate, he struggles with his inadequacy and living up to Joachim's legacy; a murky parasite that worms its way into his peaceful life every now and then.

___________________ Tora hails from the lands of the Windsinger. He had no parents; though, he was raised by his teacher, a man whom he called Master Joachim. His teacher was a dragon of the foreign Arcane land, as well as a discreet yet brilliant researcher. He had picked up a young Tora during his journey towards the Windswept Plateau. A nameless child he had been then, until he was granted the name Ametori Tora. Tora had been taken in not as a 'child to be raised', but as a student of the great researcher and alchemist, Joachim. Master Joachim had made towards the Windsinger's domain at the behest of the Shimizu family, to tutor their youngest son, Shimizu Tori.

As the direct student of Joachim, Tora was one of the very few—perhaps the only one—to see the blueprints of his works and the papers of his extensive research, those of which the rest of Sornieth were privy to. Joachim was an exalted researcher and alchemist of his time, but he did not share a good chunk of his knowledge and research to the public as if it were the plentiful waters of the sea; though, he had authored several books before, regarding other subjects such as the history of Sornieth as well as his research on the Beastclans. These books, however, are few in copy. Tora grew up reading them, to understand more about the work of his teacher; somewhere in the future, it would be his work, too.

Tora was already being taught by Joachim, therefore he did not attend the local school. The result of that was him being isolated from the other children of the town, save for the young master Tori of the Shimizu family, who his teacher was in charge of tutoring. This boy was quite the contrast to his supposed status of an elegant aristocrat. He could not stay still for longer than one could count to ten, nor could he be silent for as long. It was unfamiliar to Tora, who had taken to Joachim's tranquil and pensive nature.

As a child, however, Tora got along with Tori—a young mind bore no prejudices. Tori would be the only friend of Tora, their friendship bridged by the contract between Master Joachim and the Shimizu family. Tora learnt however, that Tori did not fancy the lessons Joachim taught him. It was of no surprise; Tori was more keen to stretch his muscles and practice his swordsmanship, than to sit still in a room learning written knowledge, together with a teacher of a strict aura, no less. The Shimizu family treated Tora as if he were one of their own, due to the closeness of his and Tori's friendship, as well as the relations between the aristocratic family and Master Joachim.

Memories of Joachim.

About Joachim—
"Master Joachim is.. was... my teacher. A brilliant mind and a renowned genius in his field. I look up to him, naturally. He's the reason why I am here today. Words can't even begin to encapsulate... just how much I appreciate him."

The potential of alchemy—
"Master Joachim often reminded me of the phrase, 'You cannot have the best of both worlds.'. It is thus our job as alchemists to break that barrier and render the impossible a reality. These possibilities — the fruits of our research — have the potential to change the world, perhaps in ways we may not find desirable. As such, we must always question ourselves, what is the consequence of this experiment? Would it be ethical for such results to be public and in the hands of others? But these are just mere questions, and if all our answers to them proved our research as morally unsound, then we'd be better off in some other field, wouldn't we? ...Moral of the story: as alchemists, we must ensure that our results do not lead to chaos, while still following our curious desires freely. Er, basically... we should still experiment as we wish. But just keep it to yourself if you doubt its integrity, unless you consider yourself among the ranks of those who exploit alchemy for selfish gains."

A certain research— part I
"I recall a certain research that Master Joachim was beset with. He was trying to break the rules of Flights, to allow children of a certain Flight to use the elemental powers of another Flight. I had been of no use then, but as of now… I cannot guarantee the perfection of my product, though I have admittedly gone through with Master Joachim's abandoned work. I do not know what comment Master Joachim will lay upon the fruits of my labour if he were here now, but suffice to say, it is a success for the most part."

A certain research— part II
"The success of my research had been a thrill. Yet now I come to realize why Master Joachim had abandoned it. Perhaps it was not because he could not find a solution, but because he knew of the impact that it would have, had it been successful. Knowing that, I now feel regret for its success. Alchemy bears potential to break boundaries, but I do not wish to be the one to render the divides between Flights useless."

The library—
"It is a mystery as to how I attained this library. A mystery to others, that is. Had it not been for the existence of this library, perhaps I would have remained in the Windswept Plateau for the rest of my life. Unlike Master Joachim, I'm not one to travel around Sornieth, unless deemed necessary..."

Master Joachim and the Arcane—
"Master Joachim originated from the Starfall Isles; his desire for knowledge is expected. However, Master Joachim is a slight different, as he calculates the possible effects his experiments would have, rather than going in blind and leaving his mess for the world to clean up after. As alchemists, we have the power to change and break the laws of this world... the art of alchemy is a formidable one, but some things are best left intact."

The history of Sornieth— part I
"Master Joachim's work also included uncovering the hundreds and thousands years worth of history behind Sornieth. That of the First, Second and Third Age is a story known to all of dragonkind. However, that is merely the beginning of this world; we are the present, the current 'end'. The missing piece of this puzzle is the middle, and Master Joachim sought to know what had happened then."

The history of Sornieth— part II
"Master Joachim discovered the existence of an older dragonkind. One that no longer exists among us, from as far as we can tell. There is much to uncover about these Ancients, though I have had scarce success with picking up where Master Joachim left off. However, Master Joachim was not the only one on the tails of this hidden knowledge; perhaps there are others to fill in the void space that I, for now, am unable to contribute to."

The history of Sornieth— part III
"From what I know of, these Ancients read and wrote in a different language. It bears few similarities to the Ursegal of today. Though it may just be a few, we can surely determine that the two languages are related. This language of Ancients, dubbed Old Ursegal by Master Joachim, appears to be a more complicated script of the Ursegal we know. I have tried to learn it, but there is not much to learn, what with our limited resources. Parchments and books written by these Ancients have been uncovered, and a few lie in the hands of this library. Due to my lack of knowledge, however, their secrets remain untouched. I would have sought assistance, if it were not for the little amount of individuals that could understand these ancient texts. .....And my.. honest lack of connections in the field."

Joachim's last expedition— part I
"This is a story from a story from the younger days of my youth, when I was still in the gentle arms of the Windswept Plateau. Master Joachim had left for an expedition towards the Southern Icefield, in pursuit of his research on the Ancients. I had stayed back, to 'take care of the place'. It was Master Joachim's decision to not bring me along. A disappointment indeed, but I would not have been of help regardless."

Joachim's last expedition— part II
"Master Joachim is... was, an expert in his field. This expedition was not his first, and certainly would not be his last, or so I thought. It wasn't unusual that Master Joachim was still off on his expedition even after months of him setting off. Master Joachim was a capable man; I had nothing to worry about."

Joachim's last expedition— part III
"Master Joachim had sent a letter back home. A letter dispatched through a Hulking Greatowl. I was expecting word of Master Joachim's progress with his research, or perhaps a notice of his soon arrival back home. The true contents of that letter were... suffice to say, the least of my expectations, and the exact opposite of them. Master Joachim was not returning, ever."

Joachim's last expedition— part IV
"In the letter, Master Joachim had spoken of an emblem of the Arcanist—it was one familiar to me, as I had often seen it on Master Joachim's person. He mentioned a place, an archive of knowledge in the Starfall Isles, that was awaiting my arrival. It was then that marked the beginning of my first journey. My journey towards the library Master Joachim had left me in the Starfall Isles."

The Present.

About Tori—
"He is an old... friend of mine. It's shocking to others who have no idea of our relationship and are under the impression that I'm being harassed on the daily by him. ...That I am, but truth be told... I wouldn't like it any better if he were to be replaced with silence. W..We're just too used to each other!"

About Tsukihyakushi—
"Tsukihyakushi is an odd kid; kid, I say, but I cannot grasp how old he truly is. Sometimes I feel he has something to hide, but he always looks so... innocent? His lacking Ursegal may just be due to ignorance or a void of proper schooling, but he seems to understand the texts written in Old Ursegal, the script of the Ancients. Our modern understanding of it is limited but he's helped me translate several passages I struggled on for months, and honestly, I'm more grateful than I am suspicious."

About Yumenoriku—
"I do not know her well. That's all. ...I'm being serious! We've welcomed her into the library once or twice to let her gather reference material for her works, but that's all. She's quite a mystery even to the townsfolk, and she was here before we arrived. I had no idea until she paid us a visit herself."

About Siegfried—
"Siegfried is a rather... recent addition to our library. He was quite small when he first became a part of us; a timid boy whose head barely reached the height of my knees. He has grown since, though. Alot. Time sure flows by steadily, quickly, stopping for none. Siegfried may come off as over-friendly, but I assure you he means no discomfort. I personally have no qualms about Siegfried's attachment to me. Or rather, he's been like this since... forever, so... it can't be helped I suppose. Tori isn't exactly fond of it."

About 'Siegfried'—
"It may have made more sense if I were to name him in my native tongue, but well... sigh, I suppose there are still things which I cannot bear to let go of even after so many years. 'Siegfried' is the name of the hero and protagonist in a story Master Joachim told me long ago, back when I was but a hatchling. Perhaps not that grand of a name... but I still find it quite dear."

About Shimizu Ichika—
"I'm... quite indebted to Madam. Despite being an orphan of no relation to her, she still allowed me growth and prosperity alongside Tori. ...It's surely a wonder, how much my fate has changed from the mere act of Master Joachim saving me. This life and its experiences, I owe it all to others."

The reemergence of Ancients—
"It came to my notice that Ancients have resurfaced in today's Sornieth. It is... a miracle, I would say. Though they do not seem to be of the ancient civilisation who wrote those texts and first existed before we did, they are still genuine Ancients. If only Master Joachim had been here to witness their re-arising..."

Bio-alchemy— Part I
"Master Joachim made me start with bio-alchemy when I was younger and but a fresh apprentice of his. According to him, they were the basics. Or at least, 'the easiest for a young mind to learn'. Not to say that bio-alchemy is a lowly, 'beginner' field but... Master Joachim wasn't wrong either. Maybe it's the animals and flora? They're definitely more interesting to a child in general than a different subject; even Tori was drawn by it, and he hates alchemy lessons."

Bio-alchemy— Part II
"Even though I initially studied them as an introduction to alchemy, they've grown on me, I can't deny it. It's simply fascinating to watch plants grow, especially when they're the fruit.. or rather, seed.. of my hard work. Most of my recent modifications and research are focused on practical improvements of their biology, but I still remember the ones I made 'just because'. ...Look, if no one else appreciates my extra-sweet Dusky Apple strain, at least Master Joachim did."

Miscellaneous skills—
"Apart from my alchemical work, I can cook, clean, sew, and... what else? My skill in handling a sword is only subpar, but it's not like I'm going out and getting into scuffles anyway. If all fails, my Light magic isn't that bad if I say so myself. When you have to rely on yourself to survive, you eventually pick up an amalgamation of handy skills don't you? Even Tori learnt to do this much, and he'd grown up a young master. ...Though between me and him, I'm clearly the better one at patching up clothes. If anything, I'm patching them up because of him!"

Flight—
"The eleven deities are important figures to many dragons of Sornieth, if not all. Even if he wasn't a devout follower, Master Joachim still inhabited the curiosity for knowledge and mysteries that the Arcanist promoted. Attention to one's deity was simply insignificant compared to his work, is all; which is... quite a characteristic trait for most of them I suppose. O- Of course, outliers aren't all that rare. I'm sure there's plenty of oddballs out there like me too. A child of the Lightweaver raised in the Windswept Plateau, chasing the ideals of the Arcanist."

The Dustcarve Dig— part I
"It came to my attention that the Dragonhome Preservation Guild is hosting a Sornieth-wide project, namely the Dustcarve Dig. Any sort of help, from any sort of dragon, would be much appreciated, it seems; I understand the desperation for additional hands on-site, though I worry about the implications it might have. Well, I suppose... in the end I am merely expecting the worst of other's intentions. In my defense, it is something to worry about, seeing as there exist despicable characters who would use discovery for their own personal gain and fame, rather than for knowledge itself."

The Dustcarve Dig— part II
"I have decided that I will be partaking in this project as a volunteer. By myself, naturally. It took a great deal of effort to get Tori to understand that I will not be letting him tag along; really, he can have the stubbornness of a child sometimes. With that out of the way, I can prepare for the Dustcarve Dig. It... will be the first time I am so far away from home. ...I suppose I can understand why Tori was so insistent on tagging along. However, despite this being my first expedition, I believe my skills are sufficient for the job. Besides, this is an opportunity for discovery that I will not miss."

Joachim's Letter.

(The words are splayed across the tattered page, stretched to their ends, crossing margins, often times big and often times small; details that betray the calmness conveyed in their letters, of one appearing so strong even at the end of their life. Remarkable — but when was he ever not..?)

Dear Tora,
It appears my expedition is to be cut short; a most unfortunate outcome indeed. By the time this letter reaches you, I would very well be no longer of this world. I have many regrets, of course. The mysteries I set out to uncover still remain unknown to me — but it seems, ultimately, that I do not get to choose my own fate. Do not mull over this, for I have not made this trip in vain. Enclosed are writings of my findings; come the future, you shall hopefully make use of them. Archaelogy is not our expertise, but I trust you will find this interesting nonetheless. Perhaps even solve a mystery or two yourself. Or not. It is up to you. Soon I will be but a dead man— my words would have little weight.

There is something else I wish for you to know. I have left an archive entrusted to an old companion in the Starfall Isles. Perhaps 'companion' is a stretch, but I'm sure you'll understand. The emblem of the Arcanist has been left in your hands; it'll be handy when you arrive. There is much more knowledge in the world for you to discover. Perhaps if you find our savings insufficient to cover the costs of travel, turn to the Shimizu family. They will help you out, on behalf of our relation.

It is a pity that my travels will end here. In the frigid jaws of the Cloudscrape Crags, no less. I have much to say to you, but the right words refuse to be written. A most complex oxymoron. I am glad I had not brought you along. To have you suffer this same bleak fate of mine is most undesirable.

Your potential is immense; my death should not weigh you down. I am the most proud of you, Tora.

Ich liebe dich.

Do you still remember when I first taught you that word?

Joachim.

The Dustcarve Dig.

The Dustcarve Dig— Departure
"...That should be all. I will be getting along now; after all, it wouldn't do good for me if I were to tarry even a minute longer. The Dustcarve Dig isn't awaiting my arrival, and I would prefer to be there as soon as possible."

The Dustcarve Dig— Musings
"I wonder, if Master Joachim were still here today, would he have lent a hand in this dig as well? It certainly does pose as an opportunity for new discovery, and Master Joachim was interested in the Ancients, after all. It will be my first time participating in such a project, and even going out on an expedition... nevertheless, I won't back down. There's nothing such as the blessing of knowledge without effort put into it. And... I also wish to live up to Master Joachim's name. I am... was an apprentice of his, and even so long after the end of his legacy, I still feel... inadequate. Perhaps when one's master is the acclaimed alchemic prodigy of Sornieth, one's standard on oneself is quite... high. This is merely the second time I am embarking on a journey far away from what I call 'home'. When compared with Master Joachim, in reality, it turns out I know next to nothing about Sornieth. I've journeyed the world — in books, writings, stories by word of mouth. But Master Joachim has experienced them firsthand. Tori may think I am being too harsh on myself, or that I am already a 'good enough' alchemist, but in my perspective, self-evaluation and comparison is a necessary step to growth. After all, Master Joachim once told me, 'The greatest alchemists are the ones who never stop learning'. There is no such thing as an alchemist who has the answers to everything; there are things even Master Joachim doesn't know. The difference is whether one strives to uncover the unknown, or chooses to remain 'good enough'."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act I, Part I
"After a near-week of restless toiling, I finally arrive at the Colonnades of Antiquity. I tried to hasten my journey as much as possible, but it looks like word of the Dustcarve Dig has reached every crack and corner of Sornieth. I should have expected the sudden increase of traffic... well, what's done is done. The project seems to have already kicked off, but it looks like I didn't miss anything significant, to my fortune. It appears not all of us present are here for the history that lies beneath this realm, but for personal reasons, too. I won't pry for how those motives relate to the Dustcarve Dig. It sparks my curiosity, yes, but I should remember that I have my own personal reasons to be here, and they are what needs my focus the most. As I have said before, this is an opportunity to not be missed. The site isn't going to earth itself again just so I can research it at my own leisure."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act I, Part II
"The first phase of the dig has been completed. Granted, I did not need to put in much effort, as the kickstart had already progressed by a significant amount when I arrived. Nothing out of the ordinary, so far. It looks like we will be having long breaks between each phase — I could use some of that time to compile my reports... if there was anything to report at all. But no matter, for I am sure there is something hidden beneath the Earthshaker's domain, waiting to be uncovered. For the time being, I suppose I can start composing my 'letters to home'... Tori was quite insistent on them, for the sake of being 'reassured' of my 'safety'."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act I, Part III
"...Looks like a dragon by the name of Fetter had disappeared before the Dustcarve Dig was set up. The mention seemed to be a slip of the tongue by Velya, the Master Archaeologian. She didn't spare any details, but it doesn't look like the Dragonhome Preservation Guild is desperately trying to hide this either. A dragon going missing during an expedition... it certainly raises some eyes. However, I won't put much thought into it."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act II, Part I
"It's time for another day's worth of work — we'll be continuing our path downwards this time. Master Archaeologian Velya looks especially enthusiastic today. It's not everyday that you get to see firsthand, an expert of the field conducting their work. I may not have heard Master Archaeologian Velya's name before news of the Dustcarve Dig reached our library in the Starfall Isles, but that is partly my fault. The world I know and have experienced are only the place where I grew up, and the place I currently reside at. My knowledge in alchemy is vast, but the world I live in is small in comparison. That is the part of me that I am trying to change; Master Joachim, before he 'settled down' in the Windswept Plateau, had travelled all over Sornieth in pursuit of his research. I'm striving to be as good as Master Joachim, and I cannot do that if I were to keep myself holed in the library. ...As much as I enjoy my peaceful life there."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act II, Part II
"That was quite an experience, seeing the Master Archaeologian amidst the forward group. I do feel sympathy for her, what with the Dragonhome Preservation Guild fussing over her. In my opinion, the Master Archaeologian is a much capable dragon. There's nothing more frustrating than being told how to do your job, or being treated like you don't. I know the Guild only worries for their Master Archaeologian in good faith, but even I can't help but be peeved, too. ...Speaking of which, it seems that the matter of a dragon going missing prior to the Dustcarve Dig is out of the bag... and as it turns out, the dragon Fetter was neither the first or only dragon to go missing. I heard that Fetter was a brilliant dragon — the Master Archaeologian's apprentice, in fact. I do hope an additional person does not get added to the list of missing dragons; it could spark worry and fear in some. Moreover, the Guild certainly would not benefit from another member disappearing. I suppose that is why they worry so much over their Master Archaeologian. ...I probably should exclude this from my letter to Tori, less he fret over something like this..."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act II, Part III
"Ebonhide... that name leaves a sour impression in my mouth. He may be funding the Dragonhome Preservation Guild, but I have a strong feeling that he is doing it for... ulterior motives. The way Master Archaeologian Velya spoke of him as well — now, that didn't sound exactly like somebody thankful for their sponsor. I don't think it would go well if I were to come across this 'Ebonhide'. The Master Archaeologian may tolerate him due to his funding, but I do not belong to the Guild, and neither do I tolerate characters like this infamous Ebonhide, who would exploit the works such as those of the Guild. There are those who walk down the path of alchemy, astrology, archaeology... all for seeking answers to the unknown. And there are those who walk down the same path, but for the 'fame' and 'profits'. I especially despise the latter."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act III, Part I
"And so begins the third phase. We discovered a pathway that descends, in the previous sector. Hints of a civilization advanced enough to build such things... it is possible that this was here for a very long time. My intuition tells me it is as old as Ancients are, but then again, I am no archaeologist. Now, onto the current tunnel... We've come across another discovery, but this is more unusual than the previous. A peculiar green glow... with no light source. I still have not come to a conclusion as to what it might be, but fret not, I suppose. You cannot assume the entire structure of an animal simply by looking at its tail, after all."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act III, Part II
"...A shrine of sorts was the last thing I was expecting we'd find. A shrine not devoted to any one of the Eleven or a dragon, to be clear. I heard a dragon of the Guild mention something about a Chamber Four. Armik, I believe, was the dragon's name. A member of the expedition prior to the Dustcarve Dig. It seems that there is another tunnel, this aforementioned Chamber Four, that is somehow related to the shrine we just found. My best guess, as someone without much knowledge about this excavation site's history, is that there was a similar structure found in another part of the site. I inquired about this relation to Master Archaeologian Velya, but she brushed it off. ...I have a feeling that she is hiding something about this, but it probably isn't my place to pry."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act III, Part III
"The source of the glowing light came from a crystal situated in the construction we just found. Master Archaeologian Velya had a magister examine it. The crystal doesn't harm us dragonkind, but it looks like it was the opposite for what used to occupy this shrine. I heard from Master Archaeologian Velya that other scholars would be coming to examine the crystal. Truth be told, I am curious too. After all, this glowing crystal isn't exactly out of my expertise... and it would be nice if I could conduct my own research on it. However, I can't do as I please here — I am just a mere volunteer, a 'stranger'. Even if I present myself as an alchemist, I doubt that would fly either... the Guild wouldn't just hand the crystal over to any person claiming to be an 'alchemist'. And no, I wouldn't dare think of using Master Joachim's name, either... if that would even be believable in the first place."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act IV, Part I
"We've backtracked back to the unearthed stairs and will be digging from its path downwards. I'm plenty sure that what we'll find are more signs of ancient civilization. Perhaps another shrine like the one that was discovered earlier, or an entirely different structure, but of similar design. It was a pity I could not study the crystal or the shrine up close, but I've taken notes of the discovery, along with diagrams and sketches for visual purposes. Archaeology is not my expertise, but it doesn't hurt to take note of the designs. After all, there's plenty room for doubt that I'll be seeing these again. The Guild would probably want to preserve the site, and that means allowing as little dragons as they can to enter."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act IV, Part II
"Just as I expected, there were more of the ancient buildings. It's a huge building, for sure... and ruined in a few places. I can only assume they are of the same design as the shrine, and therefore related. If I could get close, then I would be able to inspect the interior of the structures; there might be scrolls or texts from the civilization that built these. It gets darker further in, but nothing a little lamp can't help. In times like these, being a Light dragon sure helps... Huh? ...It looks like Master Archaeologian Velya wants us to settle on the opposite end of the cavern. Far from the structures. Succinctly put, whatever scraps of a 'plan' I came up with are gone with the wind. ...Whatever. I'm alright. I'll just... find a comfortable corner, eat, and rest up."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act IV, Part III
"First, it was the crystal. Now it's these ruins. I get it — as of now, I'm just an ordinary volunteer to the eyes of others. Not part of the Guild, and definitely lacking training from the Guild. A part of me just wants to be straightforward and request permission from the Master Archaeologian to explore the ruins, but I'm sure my proposal would be rejected. Kindly, yes, as I'd expect the mild-mannered Master Archaeologian to. Not that it means the rejection wouldn't sting like a... Oh, you know. I mean, what help is an alchemist when the object of study is an ancient ruin, best suited for the Dragonhome Preservation Guild's members? Even with the crystal... It may have been well within my field of research, but they had a Magister and several scholars from the Oculus. I'm a mere nobody, and they wouldn't waste time having me prove myself just to be on their team. ...I am just frustrated, is all. Perhaps I should get to bed... there's really no use sulking around."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act V, Part I
"Goodness! It hasn't been long since we awoke, and trouble has already stirred. ...I suppose I should be grateful for Master Archaeologian Velya's insight. No dragon has fallen through the hole, and even better, not a single dragon sports an injury. The outcome could have been much, much worse. It looks like the collapse was caused by water... I couldn't take a good look as I was further back, but from what I can hear, it's safe to say that there is a river beneath us. ...It looks like the Deepseer, Tetra, claims that the river was diverted here, and by magic... This is no ordinary feat, I'm sure of that. For a river like this to change its course through force, and by magic at that — this must be the work of a deity."

The Dustcarve Dig— Act V, Part II
"This is... it? A mass of statues... I don't recognize them at all, but I can feel that they're rich with magic — is this... the aura of Earth magic? It's so vivid and deep, you can almost imagine the strength of its wielder. Were these statues made by the ancient civilization? Wait... but the intensity of the Earth magic... Just like the diverted river, this affluent energy is caused by a deity...! That means, the Earthshaker himself... did he carve these statues? What was his purpose in leading us here, to find them?"

The Dustcarve Dig— Act V, Part III
"Well, well, well. Looks like the volunteers have to be 'herded off from the statues as far as possible'. Okay, maybe that was too harsh. I understand the Guild wants to study these statues without some careless and clueless volunteer being a little too nosy and causing unnecessary trouble. ...! Did the Master Archaeologian just say... that the figures 'weren't statues'...? This is... I am, frankly, in surprise. If not statues, then they can only be petrified... petrified dragons. Not just that, but very likely dragons from many eras ago, if I am putting together the pieces correctly. It has been hundreds and thousands of centuries upon centuries; can a living organism really be able to live for that long, by being petrified? ...Could the strong Earth magic have been sustaining them, all this time?"

The Dustcarve Dig— Final Act
"Oh, my...! The statues weren't mere figures, they were real, living dragons, carved into life by the Earthshaker himself...! This... this is the first time I have witnessed such a phenomenon... the birth of new dragons, rather than reemergence... It appears that my trip wasn't quite in vain, after all. It is a sight that holds one in awe, watching the exterior of the statues crack, as a variety of dragons never seen before emerge from their cocoon. Obelisk, I overheard the Master Archaeologian saying. It is easy to become overwhelmed with joy at the Obelisks' appearance, but we mustn't forget the fact the Earthshaker had specifically led us down here to discover this, as well as the prior disappearances of the Guild's member, tied together with the 'unknown threat' that the Earthshaker had left to seek. I can't help but feel unease for what the future will hold; what it would mean for Sornieth, and for the fate of dragonkind. ...Is Sornieth entering another era of darkness?"

The Dustcarve Dig— Return
"The Dustcarve Dig... has finally completed. Once again, as a not member of the Guild, I could not look into detail the artefacts, however, I've noted down as much as I am able to. I can take my time in returning, for there is no rush, but a part of me already longs to be home... Ah, I suppose this is what homesickness feels like. Maybe I should indulge Tori a little and hasten my travel home. But before that — perhaps I should look around the market for some souvenirs? Tsuki might appreciate a gift or two. And I recall seeing a bookstore on my way to the dig site; they might have some interesting reads. The marketplace of the Colonnades has so much to see... I might be here for a little while longer after all?"

The Dustcarve Dig— Return, of Two
"...I think the rest of them would be surprised when I return. Well... I don't quite know how to say this, but frankly put... I have picked up a dragon. Or, to be more exact, a hatchling. An Obelisk hatchling. I'm not sure how exactly this came to be... I was merely having a look at the local bazaar, when I felt something tug my coat. It was a short boy — I'd say, as tall as my knees. The curly hair was what made me realize it was an Obelisk. A hatchling, or perhaps a juvenile; I'm not exactly sure of the measurements of Obelisk dragons. It isn't necessarily accurate to judge age based on height, when there are grown faes the same height as this boy that suddenly approached me. And... what was he doing out here in the first place? Especially... clad in virtually nothing. Thank goodness. I gave him my coat for the time being — it's quite big, but whatever works. Looks like I have to go clothes shopping before I embark on my journey home, too. I sure do have quite a lot of explaining to do when I get back... I just hope that news of Obelisks reaches the Starfall Isles before I do."

The Dustcarve Dig— Company, Part I
"As I am travelling back to the Starfall Isles, I'm getting to know this company of mine bit after bit. ...There's not really that much to know though, when he was just recently been 'born'. He does speak conservational Ursegal though, surprisingly. I suppose the Obelisks had some form of consciousness while cocooned in those earth statues, and had learned the way of Sornieth dragons while in that 'dormant' state. Anyhow... it's good that he understands and speaks Ursegal — that way, we can communicate. The first thing I asked him was about his name... which he said he had none. ...My apologies, I seem to be recalling something from the distant and faraway past."

The Dustcarve Dig— Company, Part II
"Seeing as the Obelisk boy was without a name... for the past few days I had been pondering on a name for him. I'm not skilled at naming things, much less other dragons, but I've finally come to a decision. His name from now on will be 'Siegfried'. ...I guess Siegfried is a part of us — the library — now. I simply went with the flow, and my mind had somehow decided nearly there and then that I was going to bring Siegfried home — to his new home. This... is like when Master Joachim encountered my child self. Though in my case, I would have died of starvation, frostbite and whatnot, had he not picked me up that day. ...Well, never mind that now. I shouldn't dwell too long on the past."

The Dustcarve Dig— Siegfried
"I've observed his mannerisms for a while now. He's quite the meek boy — something I noticed from our very first encounter, when he tugged my coat at the marketplace. Siegfried has become comfortable with me over the days, though. I've begun telling him about our destination and the place that he would later call 'home', as well as about Tori and Tsuki. I hope they get along when they meet; I'm sure Tsuki would be ecstatic, but Tori... well, I trust him to not react negatively to Siegfried. It's not like Tori to simply choose hate for someone of Siegfried's age, but... with the way Siegfried clings to me, I won't be surprised if Tori feels like my attention is being snatched away from him. Aha! It's amusing to think that Tori would actually 'fight' with Siegfried over that, as somebody much older than him... Actually, I can see that seriously happening already. ...But Siegfried is a well-mannered boy, I'm sure intentional trouble is the last thing he would cause. If anything, Tori is the more troublesome one."
