Biography

   HADES the trickster
"Trust me, I've your best interests at heart."

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Hades stirred beneath the shade of a withered tree, pale ears twitching attentively. Someone was coming, a rare occurrence in this deserted landscape. The thought excited him, for Hades enjoyed the company of other dragons, especially when those others offered opportunities for trickery and amusement. Soon those promising others came into view, plodding slowly but steadily over the rocky horizon. It was a party of four young dragons, their forms moving with an ungainly lethargy that suggested weariness. They were clearly not from the land of Plague, for they carried cloth sacks and leather packs that presumably bulged with journey supplies, and their belongings were adorned with painted runes and dangling charms that suggested Arcane origin. Hades stood to his full height, stretching pale legs beneath him and revealing himself to the strangers. “Greetings, travellers,” he said, his voice ringing with a practiced pleasantness. It was a voice which had spoken such manipulative greetings for hundreds of years, and as such it had long since been absolved of any inexpert artificiality. The travellers stumbled, turning their heads so that they might regard Hades with their wary pink eyes.

“Greetings,” replied the slender bronze Skydancer who stood at the front of the group. “I am Nyeth of the Crystalspine Reaches, and this is my crew. We are peaceful travellers in search of knowledge, and mean no harm.” Nyeth’s tone was confident, perhaps overly so, but Hades could see some of the other dragons stiffening warily. He offered the group a toothy grin in an attempt to assuage any concerns they might have about dragons in this land of fierce rot and unregulated decay, and stepped closer to the place where they stood.

“Oh no, you must have mistaken me for some sort of uncivilized Plague brute,” Hades purred in reply, arching his slender neck pridefully as he gazed upon the crew of knowledge seekers.
“Such types do exist here, but I am not one of them. I belong to a rather more civilized society. Perhaps you would like to return to my village with me, where you could receive fresh supplies and a safe resting place.” Nyeth appeared pleased with this offer, which quite delighted Hades. He always had more fun with those who were willing to participate in his amusements.

“I apologize, Nyeth, but I think it would be wise to continue onwards,” said a small and uncertain voice from the back of the group. The speaker was a stocky female Coatl, and she wore an uncertain expression upon her face. “There’s a great amount of dark magic in- in this area.”

Nyeth scoffed disdainfully, shaking his narrow head almost before his companion had finished speaking. “This place is saturated with a darker sort of magic than we are accustomed to, Alima. It would be foolish not to take safety when it’s offered. Thank you, sir,” he continued, turning his attention back to Hades. “We would be honored to live among your people.” With this agreement obtained, Hades set gleefully off across the sun-heated landscape, heading for what appeared to be a welcoming patch of trees upon the horizon. He could already tell that he was going to enjoy this little joke, though he imagined his newfound companions would be a bit less understanding. That was alright. Hades thrived upon disappointment, and he quite liked sour surprise. And so they wandered between withered trees and the bleached skeletons of unlucky animals, Hades regaling the group with manufactured tales of his village in order to distract them and gain their trust. He told them of great feasts, strategically omitting the fact that the diners were cruelly clamoring spirits and their meal was misfortune. He told them of a sense of unity and of ancient traditions, avoiding disclosing the fact that he himself was ancient enough to have seen the birth of those traditions. On the horizon, the patch of green grew closer, and it became clear that it was a swamp of sorts, with soft ground in a shade of poisonous green and trees that rose in dark spires towards the unforgiving sky.

“Your village is this way?” one of the crew members questioned, prodding at the muddy ground with a tentative claw.

“But of course,” Hades replied with a lopsided grin, beginning to weave deftly between the hungry roots of trees and strands of sickly-green moss. “Didn’t I mention the great magic which dwells at the heart of this forest? We believe it to be what nourishes this place. Ah-stick close to me, though. This place can be a bit difficult to navigate.” He could tell even as he spoke that Nyeth’s interest was piqued, and he was not surprised when the rash young leader directed his crew onwards. All of a sudden, there was a shriek, and the travellers whipped around to observe Alima, one magenta leg sunk into wet ground that appeared to have no intention of letting her go. “Oh dear,” Hades remarked cheerfully, his brown eyes glinting with impish amusement, “I seem to have forgotten to mention the quicksand.” And then he vanished into the trees with startling swiftness, leaving the unfortunate travellers alone in a labyrinth of beasts and poison and untrustworthy soil. It was a fine joke indeed.
