Partial lunar eclipses are said to occur when the Shadowbinder provokes the Lightweaver, drawing her into a brief physical altercation. Throughout the eclipse, neither deity is able to gain the upper hand and eventually withdraw, once again allowing the moon to shine in all its brilliance. Dragons hatched during this battle take on characteristics of both the light and shadow flights, their personality shifting with the coloring of their scales. Their coloring waxes and wanes with the phases of the moon, moving from the shining white of the full moon to the complete black of the new moon.

Because of their fluid nature, these dragons have a flexible relationship with the truth. During the waning moon, shadow characteristics heavily influence their personality, while light characteristics shine through under the waxing moon. These characteristics are taken to the extreme during the full and new moons. Dragons of this subspecies become compulsive liars under the new moon and, under the full moon, are compelled to speak statements rooted in the truth. Even so, white-colored Partial Lunar Eclipse dragons cannot be trusted, having become experts at using omission and technicalities to mislead. A common saying among Partial Lunar Eclipse dragons is: “Light does not always reveal the truth. Sometimes it blinds, concealing what is right in front of you.” The more studious among these dragons are drawn to philosophy, where they can study perceptions of truth and reality. A majority, however, make their living as con-men, snake oil salesmen, and charlatans of all sorts.
