She didn't start out like this. I promise, she didn't start out like this.She's a Water dragon for Sornieth's sake, I don't know how she makes plants sprout out of the ground like she's the bloody Gladeskeeper. But she can, and she does, and the rest of us aren't entirely sure how.

When she arrived, she was a poor sodding sight of a Guardian. Cast out and left to roam, alone, looking for whatever it is she was meant to guard. I took her in, patched her up, gave her a room for however long she wanted it. I didn't think she'd stay this long, but I didn't really mind.

That is, until I realized she'd gone completely bonkers. Maybe it was something about the static in the air here -- she is was? a Water dragon after all, so maybe her magic was conducting the latent energy of the desert all wrong, or maybe she'd just lost it after she'd become a fully fledged adult without something to, you know, guard. I don't know, and at this point I don't think I could get rid of her even if I wanted to. Turns out, having someone with as much control over growth as she has is a good resource in the caves we live in, and she's happy enough to provide food to her adopted Clan.

She's a good sort, even if her magic's gone strange along with a bit of her mind. She rarely speaks, has few friends, and spends most of her time humming to her sprouts with a small, enigmatic grin on her face. She's loyal too, for being such a valuable resource, because in all the spats we've gotten into over her, and for all the power her magic has in this realm where farming really isn't possible, she's never once strayed.

Sometimes, I think that even if she's not running on mechanics or magic, maybe we gave her something else to keep living for. Maybe that's earned her loyalty, her trust, or perhaps she's just so far gone that she simply doesn't know any other place.

Either way, I'm happy to have her, strange magic and all. Besides, who am I to judge? My calling is fire and I'm sitting here fixing gears smaller than the organic eye can see into a Pearlie's heart just to keep it beating for another hundred years. I'll keep my oddballs, thank you very much, even if calling a small orchard into being twenty feet underground at the drop of a hat is completely terrifying.
