When Josie came to the clan, she was a wanderer trying to find her charge. She found it in an ancient, dilapidated building set right up against the Square Toe mountain. For a short time, she hung around the entrance, 'protecting' the ruin, but before long she became restless again. Even though her charge was supposed to complete her, to be the most important thing in her life, Josie wasn't satisfied. There had to be more to it than this.

Growing more and more restive, yet loathe to leave her charge, Josie finally decided to actually enter the old building. Shielding her face against the cobwebs and dust, she explored up and down until eventually discovering an old stone door at the very back of the building. Prying it open, she found a large room, more of a vault, in fact, full of books. Now this was something worth guarding!

On closer inspection, however, many of the books were covered with mold or shredded by insects and small animals. The rest were simply yellowed and falling apart with age. But their presence had given Josie a purpose. Over a matter of days she fervently cleaned a few rooms near the front of the building and transferred the salvageable books there. She talked to older dragons, consulted clan records, and determined the building must have been built when the clan was founded, probably as a home for someone who got rich off the water, and then abandoned when it all went to bust. Why the collection had been left behind, she had no idea, but it didn't really matter anyway.

Josie's charge wasn't a useless ruin. Josie's charge was the premises of the new Square Toe Public Library.

It took years of hard work to make the building habitable, to establish a decent-sized collection, and to win the arguments with Roslin about funding, but now it is both an asset to and the pride of the clan.

Despite founding the library and having a great deal of pride in it, most of the day-to-day running is left to her assistant, Mike. Josie primarily mans the front desk and can occasionally be found stomping around intimidating the patrons. She is surprisingly lenient in regards to late fees, though lost or damaged books are reported at the patron's risk.

Mike is the assistant librarian, resposible for fronting, shelving, and gofering for dragons too massive to fit onto the higher floors of the library (including Josie). He has an annoying habit disappearing at crucial times, citing his non-existing boyfriend as an excuse.

MIKE

Amelia works hard as the clan's blacksmith and comes to the library to relax. She has a love for learning and lively debate, but never fails to drop her voice when shushed. She origininally came because of Ken, but developed a casual friendship with Josie over time.

AMELIA

Sherman is a recluse who hides in the library basement with his computers, doing ostensibly important analytical and clerical work. He's seen less often than he is heard; the rattling of his keyboard rivals Spike's abacus for pure annoying noise.
